Actually, it is rather politely communicating that I generally disagree or am annoyed by something. An appropriate rejoinder might be "Why is that?" or perhaps, "Please explain yourself." or even "fuck off! You shouldn't be offended and here is why . . ." Or, you can take the douchebag position that the word "offensive" is meaningless, even though it isn't.

This is idiotic. While it may be overused and we may not all agree with what people find offensive, it still has meaning. Can you imagine telling someone who has just been called by a racial slur that they are just whining if they say that they are offended? Part of living in a society is being aware that things you do have an impact on other people.

As much as I love Stephen Fry, this is a silly thing to say.

Of course 'offense' has a meaning. The minute you read the word, you immediately know the feeling the writer is talking about. You might as well say that 'happy' or 'sad' don't have meaning. You can complain about people being offended, or think they're offended for ridiculous reasons, but to say that 'offense' is meaningless is simply to lack a good dictionary.

Both parties are looking for respect. Obviously if I'm a comedian making racist jokes or whatever, lighten-up it's a joke. And when someone complains and says "stop making racist jokes" they're being selfish. Cause discriminating is comic tool. It's poking fun at society. But if I'm walking through a super-market throwing any words I want around, I'm being the douche. Cause the truth is you don't know what kind of life someone else is leading. If some kid is abused for being feminine cause he's secretly gay and I'm walking around saying "fucking fag this and that" now I'm being selfish.

There's a time and a place for everything. Just be respectful. Pretend everyone is your sibling or spouse or loved one. Would you be just as abrupt with them?

I do not take offense to people's opinions personally. Aspects of me might, however, like when people say things like how ending any potential life should be illegal and we shouldn't be giving women that get pregnant and aren't married any aid...that offends my sense of humanity. But I, personally, am not offended. Those things do not target me directly.

I might get offended if people say things that target me directly, but if they're being that offensive, I generally just cut off contact with them and walk away so I don't waste my time. It is good when people insult you, because now you know who you don't have towaste your time with.

I personally hate people who say "I'm offended for X group". In reality they are trying to claim some moral superiority and ten minutes later say something very similar to what just offended them.

Offensive ideas such as being pro choice are fine. But there will always be inappropriate ideas which are just wrong at their very core regardless of what you believe.

As an American I do not know much about Fry. I have recently started watching Quite Interesting on the youtubes and I must say that I am quickly becoming a fan (I did read most of the Wikipedia page but was really looking to see if he was gay after the erect Italian comment in season 1).

Watching that show actually makes me want to move to England. Maybe I shouldn't base that on a TV show but when I see what would NEVER fly in this country being broadcast on BBC; fuck. I just want to pack up the family and go.
