This Red Lobster has the worst service. Granted it's Red Lobster so I don't' expect a lot, but keep my drink filled, keep the biscuits on the table and ask if my food tastes like dirt. I usually tip 20% but when we were there two weeks ago I left a $5 on a $60 dollar bill. The food was awesome but the service was awful.

One way I deal with people like that is just remember that chances are they are acting so shitty is because their own life is terrible. No one who is happy with themselves acts like a fool enough to a server to make them want to cry.
There isn't a thing you can do in reaction to is worse than the hell that their own mind and own life puts them through. Just walk away, take a deep breath and take some solace in the fact that while they are bitching and moaning that their bacon isn't crispy enough, too crispy, or too just right, or whatever they are bitching about, having that side comped won't change the fact that they've got a tiny penis, self hatred that goes back as long as they can remember, father that never hugged them and ugly kids. Just smile and take pity on the sad, pathetic prison that is their life.

best thing I can say about my time working at Starbucks - My manager and regional manager both commended me for handing someone back their money, asking them to leave, and asking them to never come back.
Because she was treating another "Partner" like crap.
It made me feel good, and empowered, and certainly made the other partner feel good to feel like someone, including starbucks, valued her more than a $4 latte.

Not just Red Lobster. The entire hospitality industry is this way. The worst part is that on your first day of work, your manager will likely tell you, "We back every decision you make. Especially if you are having problems with a customer." The customer will then complain about your attitude (in response to their shitty attitude), and request that you be terminated from your position (which will likely happen).

In my entire time there I did not see one person fired because of a customer complaint that wasn't completely ridiculous (ex one employed was fired for telling a customer to go fuck themselves)

My favorite was a late night shift, when some guy sent back his burgers 3 times because it was 'burned.' I'm sorry, but we were required to cook them for a certain amount of time. My manager tells me to go to the back for a couple of seconds, I walk out to see a 'burger' comprised of two raw patties and cold cheese on the table. The manager says 'this is your non-burned burger. now get the fuck out of here'

That sort of shit is unbelievably fucked up. That's a prime example of a job that psychologically and emotionally abuses its employees. (And they're underpaid as well.) And people wonder why I think "jobs" as they exist today are so wholly fucked up.
Worse yet, it just makes customers worse. Anyone who's worked in food service or retail knows how fucking awful customers can be. It's just the norm for them to be entitled, abusive assholes. I used to be a bartender in a very trendy restaurant back in the day. One night a server had ordered a cosmopolitan for his table and it came back because it was too strong (boozewise). I remade the drink poured in the martini and back it want. This time the lady sent i back because it was weak. I poured some more goose in the mixer and sent it back. It came back again, this time she said it had too much cranberry juice in it. Just to remind you, the bar was 3 deep. The server asked for the shaker and he honked the biggest loogie that I have ever seen, and deposited in there with her drink. Shook it pretty well and sent it back. This time she was happy with a perfect mixed cocktail. True story....

I give 20%, most of the time. If I don't have to think about what I should tip, it's usually 20% worthy. If the server is sub-par (waiting around for refills, not being very polite) i'll do 15 or 18%. I have trouble not tipping, because I'm friends with so many servers, and I know how much they rely on their tips to get by.

This is actually quite pleasant compared to what I was expecting. There were some pretty rotten images floating around my mind when I read the title. As someone who worked in the food industry for about 5 years I've seen things. Terrible things. Hence why you always follow the real Golden Rule.

Why are we empowering the servers here? Yes it's a shitty job but no other job would tolerate the retribution of "so I spat / did something disgusting to the meal that they're paying for" so why here?
Shouldn't the Golden Rule be something more along the lines of "Respect is a two way street in all walks of life"?
I'd far rather go with the notion that you don't treat servers like shit and that servers strive to do a good job each and every time. Not that servers should ever feel they have the right to fuck with you because they didn't like how you treated them or whatever.
That's why I don't fuck with servers - respect for them doing a good job. If they don't do a good job then that's explained by lack of a tip. If I ever suspected one of fucking with my food then a word in the ear of their manager would be the start of their worries. Customers should not be held hostage to the whims of the employee.
