That's fucking stupid. Women who were, and still are being forced to cover their whole bodies in Afghanistan and other countries weren't allowed to get jobs, they couldn't wear makeup, leave the house without a man. They weren't even allowed to make eye contact with men, they weren't allowed to drive, talk without their husbands permission. If they were infertile, unmarried, they are seen as useless members of society. Some women have their vaginas sewn shut, their clitoris's removed so they can't even enjoy sex. The legal system, completely biased towards men... Women are seen as property... pets, inferior to men both physically and mentally, and this person compares their situation with that of a woman who chooses to not wear many clothes?

What a ridiculous comparison.

A million times this. A rapist gets off free, the woman that's raped gets lashes, disowned by her family, and sometimes stoned to death.

It's actually a perfect comparison. See, the cartoon is comparing the women's perspectives/opinions towards one another. And they are shown to be the same. You took it way out of context. I don't blame you or anything. But you sound like the equivalent of a fundamentalist muslim looking at a cartoon of Mohammed. I would draw a cartoon of that, of you and a muslim looking at cartoons. Thanks for the inspiration.

While the above is true for some places - you have to realize there are also women who CHOOSE to wear the burqa. I hate when westerners look at every woman that is covered like that and think she is being oppressed solely because of it.

i thought that when women wear the hijab, it's often their choice, not burqa. But then again, I used to live in a pretty tolerant muslim country where hardly any women wore the burqa..

Of course, I understand that some women choose to wear burka's. My city has 40% of Englands Muslims living in it, but my point still stands. The two things are not comparable.

I've come to the (admittedly somewhat irrational) realization that most of the women that "want" to wear the burqa have probably been brainwashed into "wanting" to wear it by their culture.

Its just... I hate how people think of all muslim women as some brainwashed mass of people. I lived in the middle east for two years and you see all types of muslims and they are JUST like any other religious group here in the US. I kind of compare it to how mormons wear the magic underwear - its stupid, but whatever, they can believe whatever they want to. (though i do still recognize that some women are indeed being forced and brainwashed)

I agree. Nobody would want to wear this shit unless they were not used to wearing anything else.

I've lived in the middle east - I can see why some would want to wear it aside from religious reasons.

I don't think the comic was intended to compare the degree to which each woman is suffering. It is meant to show that people tend to think they have the right point of view and instead of looking at the root point (which in this case would be: we all live in a culture that influences (and in some cases forces) women to dress a certain way) people tend focus on things like your comment. Which to me is saying "Certain Muslim women are worse off so you can't say that western women's actions are influenced by a male dominated culture." To me that is ridiculous.

THIS. exactly. Its the way those two types of women may judge each other.

I think the problem with your statement is that no one is claiming that Western Culture is not male dominated, male centric, and that woman's fashion is not influenced by men. Degrees matter.

To use a different example, this would be like comparing a society that is too tolerant of domestic violence with a society that encourages a wife to be treated as property. While both societies have issues, any comparison of the two is ridiculous.

Except that one is forced to wear her outfit on punishment of death, it's a great comparison.

Argument over. 1UP for great justice!

I don't think that forcing women to live in cloth bags is comparable to allowing women to wear sexually provocative clothing.

I believe the artists is contrasting their different perceptions of one another. The Westernized woman sees the Middle Eastern woman as being oppressed and unable to wear what she wants or express her sexuality. The Middle Eastern woman sees the Westernized woman as a sexual slave forced (either directly or through social pressure) to dress provocatively for men. One views the other as oppressed while she in turn views her as exploited.

This is so true. America forces girls to wear enormous sunglasses!!! Worst Perspective comparison EVER!

... The difference being that no one forces anybody to wear a bikini.
