Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Once found out about polarized lenses when I was young... I've never worn a pair of shades that isn't...

[–]Nonamesdb 21 points22 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My friends don't appreciate how amazing polarized sunglasses are.

[–]farkdog 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

However, polarized lenses make it difficult to see the screen of my GPS. I assume this is because there is some sort of polarizing filter in the GPS screen assembly that is being reinforced by the filter of my sunglasses.

[–]KAM1KAZ3 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They make any LCD screen go dark if oriented the right way.

Does anybody else see weird blotchy spots on car windows (especially back windows) when wearing polarized glasses?

[–]Nonamesdb 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah also sometimes there are some purple windshields

[–]KAM1KAZ3 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's a reflective coating which is supposed to reduce glare and cut down on UV light. I see it all the time on Mercedes.

[–]jasontimmur 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Minivans.

[–]KAM1KAZ3 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think has to do with the glass being tempered. I've never seen the spots on windshields, which are laminated.

[–]johnyquest 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

YES I've always wondered what these were ... usually only on rear windshields and only on certain cars...!

[–]Doctor_Kitten 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think that's sun damage. Those spots are all over the windows of damn near everybody's car in Florida.

[–]ShamelessPluggerAMZN 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I see it on office building windows as well.

[–]blueshiftlabs 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It has to do with the tempering - as polarized light goes through glass under strain, it distorts the polarization in one direction or another. Using another polarizing filter on the other side lets you see the distortions.

In this case, the polarized light is sunlight and glare, and the second polarizing filter is your sunglasses.

[–]jasontimmur 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

YES. I always wondered why this is. I think it has something to do with the tempering process.

[–]cive666 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I always thought it was from the tempering process.

[–]TrollNumberOne 2 points3 points ago

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I assume this is because there is some sort of polarizing filter in the GPS screen assembly that is being reinforced by the filter of my sunglasses.

Yep, polarization is fundamental to how LCDs work. There's a polarizing screen, then a matrix of liquid crystals (which are actually stacks of crystals that can twist in two different directions depending on the voltage applied to them), and then another polarizing screen. The twisting stacks of crystals actually rotate the orientation of the light's polarization as it passes through them. So depending on how much they are twisted, the light's polarization will be more or less aligned with that of the second filter, and so more or less of the light will shine through.

[–]profnutbutter 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Which is why we need to improve OLED technology.

[–]blueshiftlabs 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The light from OLED panels is also preferentially polarized - I get a similar effect on the AMOLED screen of my Samsung Epic 4G. I asked an optics friend about it, and he said that you get polarized light whenever you have any asymmetry in the LED junction (which they all have).

[–]profnutbutter 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Really? Damn... Nevermind, then...

[–]blueshiftlabs 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

LCD panels work by having two crossed polarizers with a material (liquid crystal) in between them that, under ordinary circumstances, rotates the light polarization. When current is applied to the liquid crystal, however, it stops rotating the polarization, and so the polarized light gets blocked by the front filter.

PROTIP: Rotate your head to make the screen more visible. 45 degrees in one direction or the other typically does the trick (most LCD panels use polarizers at that angle).

[–]cresteh 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's the problem with LCD's as they have a polarizing filter inside, that's how the system actually works.

Edit: My comment sounded condescending. It wasn't. Just saying that there is a polarizer layer inside infront of the pixels. It's rotated 90 degrees and the pixels change their ability to polarize light to let more or less light through. Basically your sun glasses are filtering the light out from the LCD.

:D Someone can correct me.

Professional fishermen rely on polarized lenses to see "under" the water and spot fish that other anglers may miss without wearing them. This increases the likelihood of catching more fish. Rather than relying on pure luck of cast + reel, you can place your lure, closer to / on top, of a fish.

[–]HookDragger 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's awesome.. My phone needs one of these on its camera.

[–]Neurorob12 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If your sun glasses are polarized you can put them I front of the lens for the same effect.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's possible, but awkward, you'd have to hold them at the exact position with one hand and the camera with the other. Polarizing filters have a mounting that lets you rotate them to find the best angle.

Maybe to photograph, but I've seen this IRL. I'm 90% sure it's lake Havasu in Arizona, however the water there does not look like this in the slightest.

[–]PBRBeer 10 points11 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Definitely not lake havasu, Looking at the vessel registration numbers i would guess it may be in europe somewhere, the US uses State initials, preceding the registration numbers

[–]Hindu_Wardrobe 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My exact thoughts. Havasu is not that clear, but as someone else mentioned a polarizing filter has been used.

[–]delta_epsilon_zeta 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A polarizing filter doesn't make it more clear, it just gets rid of a lot of the specular reflection/highlights on the surface of the water that we're used to seeing.

Edit: Supposedly Croatia

Sometimes companies export things to Europe for certain reasons.

[–]BattleSausage 0 points1 point ago

Or the owners imported it. Modern wakeboard from the States, 80's era boat from the states and non US registration. Strange situation.

why does this boat have a roll bar?

[–]worldlyguy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a true ski boat. It is not a roll bar. It is where the ski rope is tethered.

[–]jedman 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I totally get why they are used, I love ski sports. But a tall ugly tower sure does ruin the lines of those gorgeous inboard tournament boats I have loved lo these many years.

[–]mobiusstripclub 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I happen to like the look of my boat. But admittedly, when towers first came out I was not a big fan of the look either. Towers are great for minimizing the risk of decapitating your rear seat passengers (unlike center pylons), helping beginners get up on a board for the first time (due to a more upward pull) and they help you get bigger air once you start catching some air.

[–]tcaz 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a ski boat, however, with the addition of the tower, it seems they use it for wakeboarding. An older Ski Natique with a tower, and the proper amount of ballast can throw a good wake. The angle of the rope is now optimal for getting bigger air, in comparison to the rope attached to a lower pylon which pull the rider down.

[–]atheistpiece 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It gets even worse when they start hanging giant marine speakers off them as well.

Then you have the equivalent of an escalade with spinner rims blasting shitty music, on the water.

[–]SilverMustang35 0 points1 point ago

Thats the Wetsounds 3some HLCD package. Very loud speakers. I have the pro80's on mine, but I like to think I don't blast shitty music on the water. I only turn them on when I wakeboard... Waterfall jumping boater overshoots his landing. Photo captures the descent mere milliseconds before impact with the rocks below. There were no survivors.

The closest thing I have been to seeing this IRL was in Norther California at a lake called Bullards Bar. I was launching the boat and could clearly see the bottom it was amazing. Usually the launch is clouded with nasty oil and junk. SoCal lakes are all dark and murky.

Polarized lenses make the boat float 3 feet above the water duh they were made in collaberation between Gandalph and Dumbledoore.

When I was young, I saw a picture like this and said to my parents, "It looks like it's floating!" Mom responded, "Well..." then laughed at me.

Sacrilege.

[–]kaydub88 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Believe it or not, but those early 90s Nautiques can throw up a really nice wake. Lots of kick.

[–]longshot 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I guess I was behind a Mastercraft in those years. Wake was silly behind those too.
