Don't forget their ancestors the Franks. Everyone seems to forget that much of Western Germany, France, and Northern Spain were controlled by this tribe. In the last dynasty of the Franks the lands were split to become their current day nations. Charlemagne also came from the dynasty who seems to be revered by most of the western European nations. The creation feudalism was also accredited to the Frankish as well.

But yes jokes based on the last 100 years are the only that matter for civilizations which stretch back 2000+.

I worked closely and often with French fighter pilots earlier this year on my last tour of Afghanistan. I can say, with all honesty, that they were just as aggressive as any other nation's pilots when it came to dropping bombs. I have the utmost respect for their military; it's their government that doesn't allow them to do what they do so well.

Really? Are you sure about that?

Also, don't forget those mountains; while they might not shoot back, you can't fly through them. It's an incredibly demanding environment for any flying CAS platform, fixed or rotary wing.

I'm pretty sure about the firing back thing; I think earlier in the war yes but not so much these days (lestratege was talking about fighters and bombers, and to my understanding any SAMs the taliban may have once had are blown to bits). I guess if they had some stingers left over they might use them but I don't think those are that effective against fighters up high. You're right though that a rotary wing aircraft will have a lot people firing back though; lots of RPGs left over from the ruskies laying around in Afghanistan. And I have heard about how hard it is to fly through the mountains; especially on close air support.

Anyway, I was on your side for this point, sorry if I came across a little rough. I am very respectful of all our troops in Afghanistan, from every nation.

      You can't judge the U.S. military of now with that of 1812, 1776, 1861, or even 1918.

      Countries and their armies grow and evolve.

      What about WW1? It's not because the US joined at the 11th hour that they were nothing more than the last drop in a big bucket.

      And the US hasn't had a modern war on its soil anyway, so I'm not sure they are qualified to make assessment about what war is. Some might know fighting, but they certainly do not know war.

      And since Vietnam, it's not like the US is in a winning streak either...

      Dude, the Civil War. The South's economy is still recovering from that. Most people in America don't have a sense of War. But go to the South. It's still there.

      And that doesn't make sense anyway, were you alive during WWII or WWI? No. The population that is alive that was during that is tiny, and were so young at the time in most cases for them to not know anything more "about war" than the population of the US. Not to mention we have a ton of veterans. Millions. So on the whole, the US probably does know more about war. But then again, neither of our stances on this are verifiable in any way.

      The Fresh will and initiative, and morale, that the US brought is extremely important. The men and machines we brought, less so, but still important. That's the only reason UK/France could even match Germany after they brought troops over from the closed Eastern Front.

      The US overexaggerated their role, and the resentful British and French generals tried to undermine it as much as possible. It was more vital than they'd admit, but it didn't "win the war".

      That the French and English essentially couldn't close the deal on Germany after Verdun and the Somme, and then the French surrender in WWII and their utter defeat and pleas for help in Vietnam all work together to create the image of the French being pansies. It's not like WWI was a standalone event to give that image. It works in concert with others.

          I would say that jokes about French military ineptitude are a European thing. The French historically are badass but you have the Battle of Agincourt on the British side in which they got there ass handed to them. Then they picked up a bit until a succession of weak kings before the rise of absolutism then got kicked in the 7 years war but picked up again with the rise of Napoleon. Then they got royally owned three times by Germany in the space of 100 years. Before this they had been the bullies of Europe so its more funny because its a fall from grace. Especially in WWII then they clearly could have given the German army a run for it's money if they hadn't surrendered. and THAT is why we call the French cowards. But the real cowards are the Italians they used up all their Military points during Roman times. During the North Africa campaign a squad of Italians surrendered to a camera crew. They REALLY did not want to fight in that war.

          Losing to Germany in war is like losing to Canada in hockey. When it comes to WW2, there was more going on than a simple surrender. I doubt any other country would have been able to withstand the Germans under those conditions.

          As for the Italians... yeah. I don't know if I'd call them cowards as much as totally not into fighting. A lot of them were looking for chances to surrender, just so they could end their role in the war.

            You gotta give them the Pacific theater of WW2.

            But it's true they think they won WW1 (even though there were just 1 drop in the last few months they like to think they were the shit), that they kicked the nazis too (no matter how you explain that the Western front was the secondary front of the European theater, they don't want to believe you). Korea was a draw, Vietnam a loss, Iraq and Afghanistan a stalemate at best.

            Ok, so the 2nd Gulf war was a fantastic show, and the invasion of Grenada was fucking brilliant but against 6th division players.

            So in all, the only thing the US can military brag about having achieved on their own is having kicked the Japanese ass for good. Ok. That gives them the moral high to judge others.

            I have no illusions that the US won WW2 on their own, but I think it's fair to say they won the war. All allied countries can claim to have won WW2.

            As an American I just need to say that America played a big part in defeating the Nazis. America even helped the Russians with supplies which they really needed at the time. America didn't win the war by itself in Europe, but they played a HUGE part. Even when America wasn't part of the war (officially) they sent a shit ton of supplies to Europe.

            Again I'm not claiming WE won the war. The other wars are ridiculous and I'm not even going to comment on them. I don't agree with those wars. =P

            We are not talking about the supply side of the story. Otherwise the USSR won the Vietnam war.

            I do know the supply side of WW2 (which wasn't free in case you forget, but paid in gold and then when gold ran out, in debt) but we are not talking about materiel here, but fighting.

            They go hand in hand. How are you to win a war without supplies? I'm not discrediting any nation from fighting, I'm just saying that America played a major part in the victory. So I don't agree with saying that America can only brag about beating the Japanese.

            Naturally since America played a part in the victory, there will be some people who'll claim that America won the war. I'm sure there are some people in other countries who do the same. That's unavoidable. And after all it isn't the American government/military who are bragging. It's regular people who probably weren't even alive till 30 years after the war.
