Poe:
http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/atheists.asp
[–]Ktcbert 24 points25 points26 points 10 months ago
Exploring off of yours snopes, the paper that it ran, declares that "They said we should be ashamed of ourselves for printing it, and that we would never have done that if it were about blacks or Jews. They’re right, we wouldn’t have. However, to be an atheist, you make a conscious choice." Out of curiosity did anyone here wake up one day (or perhaps after mid-afternoon tea) and go "Today's the day that I realize religion is bullshit?" Also wouldn't being Jewish be a choice as well?
[–][deleted] 24 points25 points26 points 10 months ago
I never made a conscious choice to be an atheist. I never believed in god. As far as I'm concerned, atheism is the default position.
[–]Drakonisch 3 points4 points5 points 10 months ago
I can no more believe in god than I can the tooth fairy.
[–]heymaniknowyou 3 points4 points5 points 10 months ago
I heard its genetic. ;)
[–]silverfirexz 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Nah man, definitely biological in origin. Hormones in the womb and shit.
[–]Jackle13 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
No. What causes somebody to become an atheist is pretty much all nurture. It has nothing to do with genetics or hormones.
[–]ChemicalRascal 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
My nurturing left me incapable of recognising sarcasm.
[–]Jackle13 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Were they being sarcastic? Sorry. I have seen people on the internet claim that religiosity is determined by genes, so I'm not sure when somebody is being serious.
Hormones in the womb and shit.
I think that's a fairly good attempt at sarcasm. You know, a kind of mocking of the "It's the government, man!" thing.
I could be wrong, but that's how I interpreted it. Given the up/down vote ratio, it seems to be the popular interpretation.
[–]Peach_Muffin 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
I choose to not believe in any sort of all-powerful deity just as I choose not to believe in unicorns, fairies, or magic. I value my free will too highly to make the claim that I was possessed by an irresistible urge to not believe in that kind of nonsense.
[–]Ktcbert 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
Did you actually choose not to believe in that? I'm not saying you just had some random urge that said hey that's bullcrap. But rather that you accepted the facts as it is, based on the evidence presented to you, and that could be the only conclusion you could draw. I did not choose to believe fire is hot, rather I stuck my hand in there and it burned like hell.
[–]GHDUDE17 4 points5 points6 points 10 months ago
I didn't decide to become an atheist, I had to accept that it is necessary to be one if you use your brain and actually think about things reasonably.
[–]flamingspinach_ 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
Interesting, it seems they have nuked the document you linked.
[–]rudeandginger 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
If it's a choice to be an atheist, then it's a choice to be a theist, as well. I mean, the statement is ridiculous, but if it's to make even a smidgen of sense, it has to go both ways.
[–]PerogiXW 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
I just sort of... morphed in to atheism over time. It wasn't/isn't even a secret to anyone that knew me. It was just me working logically through the information that pervades our society over the course of many years. No choice, just natural progression.
As for being Jewish being a choice, yes and no. People can convert to Judaism, but most of the time the bigotry is centered on "Ethnic Jews".
[–]Hibno 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
There is also the more subtle implication that the only reason you should stifle your criticism of black and Jews is not because there is nothing to criticize, but because they just can't help the way they are.
[–]GreggoryBasore 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
"Jewish" is technically like two words which refer to two separate things, but use the exact same spelling and pronunciation. In the ethnic sense, Jewish refers to semite/hebrew culture. In the religious sense it refers to followers of the different interpretations of the oldest of the Abrahamic faiths.
This is how you get a lot of atheists who still call themselves, or ar considered jews. On an interesting side note, it's also how certain christians in the middle ages could still be thought of as jewish. There's a scene from a biopic about Michelle De Nostradamme (a.k.a. Nostradamus) that has an early scene where his grandfather tells him that he's jewish. The kid is shocked by this "but grandfather, I've been baptized". His gramps responds "ture enough, but in the eyes of the inquisition, a baptized jew is still a jew."
[–]Kealper 14 points15 points16 points 10 months ago
Phew
Thanks, I can breathe again...
[–]SigmaDraconisIV 5 points6 points7 points 10 months ago
You're right. Damned indiscernible.
[–]MghtMakesWrite 19 points20 points21 points 10 months ago
Still reflects many people's actual opinions.
[–]Astronoid 7 points8 points9 points 10 months ago
This is accurate, but irrelevant.
[–]mihoda 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
upvote...
[–]OBChristenson 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
Beat me to it. This urban legend is getting a little worn and tattered.
[–]squigs 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
I thought it was. Seems my poedar is improving.
[–]sli 31 points32 points33 points 10 months ago
Atheists: Get off of our country.
But the sex is so good!
[–]TitaniumTicTac 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
I lol'd have an upvote, sir.
[–]LEIFey 35 points36 points37 points 10 months ago
Best line: "I don't care if they (atheists) have never committed a crime, atheists are the reason crime is so rampant."
[–]Contero 22 points23 points24 points 10 months ago
This is the line that gives it away as satire. They almost had a perfect Poe there.
[–][deleted] 10 months ago

[–]Supermoves3000 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
There are those who seriously believe that atheism isn't protected by "freedom of religion" because it isn't a religion. A young member of /r/atheism was told as much by his high school principle when she refused to allow him to start a school atheist society.
[–]Monstermash042 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
Isn't a non-belief still another belief?
[–]BlindGrapefruit 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
No... Atheism is not a belief that no gods exist. That would be a positive endorsement of no gods existing. Atheism is a suspension of credulity.
You would suspend credulity if you answered an ad for a used car and the person selling the car couldn't produce the car.
It doesn't necessarily mean the car doesn't exist, but the mere assertion that it does exist is unsatisfactory as evidence.
How do you build a belief system out of dismissal of an assertion until such time as evidence is presented?
What are the chances of someone building a church around the assertion that pink unicorns absolutely don't exist?
[–]LEIFey 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
Technically, the perfect Poe should have no giveaways:)
[–]sli 20 points21 points22 points 10 months ago
Psst.
That's probably why "almost" was used.
[–]LEIFey 11 points12 points13 points 10 months ago
Crap, out reading-comprehensioned. I concede.
[–]sli 11 points12 points13 points 10 months ago
Let us adjust our monocles together as a sign of peace and mutual respect.
[–]LEIFey 8 points9 points10 points 10 months ago
I tip my hat to you, kind sir.
[–]sli 7 points8 points9 points 10 months ago
And I to you. Here's hoping the remainder of your day is pleasant.
[–]lightjedi5 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
I enjoyed that conversation. I liked how you corrected him politely, he conceded respectfully and you both adjusted your monocles. Tip of my hat to the pair of you.
[–]zilas11[S] 8 points9 points10 points 10 months ago
I enjoyed this'n "The United States is based on having freedom of religion, speech, etc., which means you can believe in god any way you want,() but you must believe."
[–]LEIFey 9 points10 points11 points 10 months ago
Yeah, that was good too. The word "must" seems out of place in a sentence about freedom.
[–]pajam 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
Except they only list Christian denominations. I guess not only atheists should leave, but anyone who is not Christian as well.
[–]Tunis1jp 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
That line sums up for me why I don't engage in rational discourse with Thiests. When come up with answers before you know what the problem is, you end up with rationalities like that one.
[–]A_User 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
I'm still struggling to get my head around that one.
[–]0007000 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
It's funny how with his last sentence he proves so easily that everything he has written above is false.
[–]Bulletbill22 11 points12 points13 points 10 months ago
"In God We Trust" was not added until the 1950's. As far as religious freedom goes, I think the founders were Deists, but only because "Atheist" would have made them heathens.
[–]AddictiveSoup 6 points7 points8 points 10 months ago
Spot on, either they were deists, deists who only called themselves such to avoid the (then almost unacceptable) label of atheists, agnostics, or pantheists (people who believe in god in more of a poetic than literal sense). Of course there may have been a few Christians, but they were certainly not the majority.
[–]IAmNotAPerson6 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
"'In God We Trust' has nothing whatsoever to do with the establishment of religion. Its use is of patriotic or ceremonial character and bears no true resemblance to a governmental sponsorship of a religious exercise."
I actually started to tear up.
[–]postguy2 7 points8 points9 points 10 months ago
Why would a paper even print that? I know it's letters to the editor, but would they also print a faxed photo of somebody's vomit?
[–]trust_the_corps 4 points5 points6 points 10 months ago
This brings to mind an interesting experiment. Perhaps someone should send them a photo of somebody's vomit and see if it appears in the next print.
[–]Vector_Matt 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Some of them...? Probably.
[–]candystripedlegs 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
in small towns they have to make the paper interesting somehow as there isn't always a lot going on. kooky letters to the editor is as good a way as any to spice up the paper. the local paper around here prints some exceptionally crazy letters. there is one guy who gets printed about once every 2-3 months who writes stuff very similar to this (he also likes to write about gays, liberals, and the end times), but he is not a poe.
[–]eromitlab 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
Every few months, my local paper will print the right-wing hate machine-inspired mental dribblings of a woman from Ardmore that amounts to a faxed photo of their vomit.
[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 10 months ago
I think it's very cutting edge of that paper to post opinions from mentally ill people.
I guess it's only fair they get their say.
[–]RaindropBebop 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
Cutting edge paper sounds fucking scary.
[–]LTshrink 5 points6 points7 points 10 months ago
Reading this makes me want to volunteer to leave the country! Living with this much crazy around gets tiring...

That's my single favorite thing about this image. All this venom and the claim that most of America would like to see Atheists kicked out, and the next letter down is about fishing.
[–]ama_me 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
Its things like this that make me proud to be an American!
[–]arty8803 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
ಠ_ಠ I'm hoping this is sarcasm.
it is :)
[–]arty8803 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
Then you have yourself a hug, kiss, and upvotes dear friend. :)
[–]breadrising 3 points4 points5 points 10 months ago
I like how money saying "In God We Trust" is her proof that atheists shouldn't be allowed in America.
...it wouldn't be the first time Christians have believed something to be true because something they wrote themselves says so...
[–]DrKnockers04 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
Kenai River... this is from an Alaskan newspaper. Anyone surprised?
[–]McLogan 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Nope. we rank 46th in religiousness though...
[–]DrKnockers04 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
Really? I would have thought higher. Perception busted.
[–]vitani88 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
You would be amazed at the lack of churches in Alaska.
[–]amadorUSA 4 points5 points6 points 10 months ago
Old. Very old. Also fake
[–]ertaithewiz 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
Yes, likely a fake: http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/atheists.asp
[–]femzzzzzap 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Trust me lady, if there was an easy way for all us Atheists to get out and start a new country....we would gladly leave. Our country would kick ass! But have fun with your newfound breakdown of science and technology you'll soon have since you'd be left with a bunch of idiots who do not know how to operate or make anything complicated in the world.
[–]scottmacwatters 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Man, I wanted to read the fishing letter.
things like this make me a little sad to be an Alaskan.

By her logic, mutes and loners need to GTFO of America because they don't use their speech and/or assembly rights.
[–]XynthZ 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Anyone else, after the first sentence of so, just naturally transition to reading that with a deep redneck accent in your head?
[–]urbanfervor 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
She's just angry about living in Bumblefuck, Alaska. If I had to live in small town Alaska, I'd try to cope too, but I would just drink myself silly instead of writing incredibly stupid letters to the local paper.
[–]saganforpresident 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
lol, I would laugh if all 99% of scientist just got up and left the US and took all scientific advancements with them.
[–]voiderest 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Its my understanding that its over 50% but I'm pretty sure its under 99%. It also varies between fields and standing. Higher degree of believers in maths and fewer with higher standing across the board.
[–]3migo 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago

[–]TeArgy 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago

Freedom of religion, which means you can believe in god any way you want but you must believe
Tell that fool, for her statement to be valid it should not read as "Freedom of religion" but "Freedom of choosing your own God"
[–]ZeMeest 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
Strong? That's a funny way of saying stupid.

It stuns me how little most Americans know about the foundation of our country and what the amendments mean.

[–]loleeta 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago

You can only choose between Christian flavors.
[–]andersoncoopersboner 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
I know I'm on your turf right now, and I'm honestly not trying to start a flame war, but I just hope you guys know that most of us Christians aren't like that. They're just the loudest, craziest mofos, so they get a lot of attention.
[–]HPDerpcraft 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
She sounds crazy. Or a troll.
You have no idea how much I hate being identified with the batshit insane people out there. (Yea I swore. Im a bad christian, I know)
Those are the best kind.
Poes law. But I'm more curious about the fishing letter!
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
I've told several religious and political nuts that I would be more than happy to leave America if they paid my way out of here and set me up with a job in some other country. Of course, no one has taken me up on this offer.

[–]lightjedi5 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
I always like how people twist freedom of religion. If that's how it is I'll just say I interpret this to mean that we have the right to be free of religion.

[–]wayndom 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
Whether it's genuine or not, I'm really getting tired of posts that simply show how stupid believers are.
The fact is, there are stupid believers and intelligent believers. There always have been, and always will be. So what is accomplished by posting samples of idiocy? They don't prove that all believers are hate-filled morons, or anything else, for that matter.
What, really, is the point of these posts?
[–]broo20 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
If I was American, I'd just leave.
I'd make my own tree house, and it would say "no Theists allowed."
And it would be the bestest tree house. With only me and my Dawkins.
[–]darkangelx 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
IF we leave then they win. Kinda like being told to move to the back of the bus, then just not riding it to avoid the retards.

[–]Astarys 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
If we were actually forced declare our beliefs in something I could see the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster becoming the fastest growing church in America. Either that or the Jedi Church like the one in the UK.

Atheism is a religion. because we have faith (with reason) that there isn't one thing that created us, instead a series of scientific events.

I don't have faith, I have knowledge based on evidence.
[–]proddy 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
