On r/buildapc I have tried to help, and in about 2 of the maybe 10 instances i've done so, i've gotten downvoted and not even a reply from OP.

Trust me, the op probably appreciates your input However, on larger topics, its hard for them to respond to everyone. It seems as if a good portion of that community is pretty new to PC building, and possibly even computer hardware in general. Some of the disputes and concerns addressed in /r/buildapc comments are sometimes arguments that the OP has never even thought of.

However, It really does bug me when genuine advice or links to relevant articles or benchmark results gets pushed down while the top comment is something along the means of "AMD sucks, go with NVidia." with practically to backing no their argument.

However, I wouldn't say it happens often in that subreddit, but I do see it from time to time. This is when I simply go "Why was this downvoted so hard?" For instance, today I saw someone post an image of a screencap of a build they were going with, the website captured was obviously in German. I then saw a comment with a declining net point count written in German that contained a couple of links to a domain I didn't recognize. Now, I personally don't speak German, so I passed the text through Google translate because It looked a little bit like a spam bot, but it turns out it really wasn't. It was just a guy recommending an Austrian brand of power supply that he stated was a better value than the PSU in said pic because it looked like the op had that option available to him/her. I dunno, it just looked like everyone discounted the comment automatically as spam or something because they didn't understand it, meanwhile the OP probably did understand what the guy was trying to convey.

EDIT: Noticed a myriad of run-on sentences after I read the comment over.

True, true. The instances where I got downvoted there was maybe 3 or 4 other posts (I always went to the new section) and OP already replied to someone else.

Ah well, karma doesn't mean much to me, it's the thought that people disapprove of a comment when I try to help that does. If someone experienced offers you help and information on a subject you need help in, in real life, would you ignore it and say "Fuck off"? No, because that would be rude.

I'm gonna give it another try as i'm fairly experienced in computer building and not everyone is an asshole. I just wish everyone was nice.

The thing is though, the downvotes aren't supposed to be used to show disapproval, they're there to hide comments that don't add to the discussion.

Too many new users = Nobody knows or follow the Rediquette. It's like Usenet and the Eternal September all over again.

I see a lot of people just ask a simple question or make a straightforward statement and there will be 1 or 2 downvotes. No one's going to cry over the lost karma, but it just makes me wonder, what the fuck did those 1 or 2 people have up their asses?

When I think of douchebaggery on Reddit I mean someone downvoting other people because they have an opinion or different taste to themselves. Now that happens all over Reddit.

In r/anime, I've seen posts/comments being downvoted because of a comment/opinion that didn't match others.

tl;dr Upvote stuff that contributes to the conversation at hand whether you agree with or or not.

Downvote stuff that derails the thread (largely off-topic) or is inflammatory (open insults, flamewars)

If I'm not mistaken, either Buddhism or Hinduism actually views the accumulation of karma as a roadblock to enlightenment. I could be wrong about that, though, as I never paid much attention in class.

You don't accumulate karma, anyway. The Western karma is the same as cause and effect. In Buddhism, it's more like world view. Whatever actions you commit shape your perception of the world.

Agreed there, if someones being pissy (bad attitude) it's probably dragging down the conversation.

I ran into this guy named Vee_vee earlier, turns out all he does is start fights on reddit, literally dozens within a day, losing over 100 karma points in single pages. Go figure.
