I posted something to the effect of "having to wear eyeglasses is tragic", which I meant to convey with complete sincerity, as I personally have a very high prescription and glasses that I cannot go anywhere without. It was downvoted.

I looked into lasik eye surgery once under the impression that it was all done with laser beams. I got to the part about knife-in-eye and said to myself "Lol nope!" and have been proudly wearing my glasses ever since. I have enough trouble as it is just trying to put contacts in without having a scalpel peeling my cornea back.

Oh don't get me wrong, I don't think it'll kill me. I don't even think it'll blind me or harm me, I just think that it requires me to sit there very still while someone sticks a scalpel in my eye and peels back my cornea. So uh no deal there.

I don't know about the anesthetic - there's no nerve endings in your cornea so you should be ok there. But yes, there's a sedative. I've been sedated before. Makes me feel like a fucking zen master - but you know what? I'd still panic like fuck if a knife was coming at my eye.

No, because if you're asleep what happens? You close your damn eyes - that's very inconvenient. You also can't be told to stare straight ahead and don't flinch so the laser doesn't fuck your day right up. You have to be awake for the whole thing. They give you a sedative to calm your ass down and maybe make the idea of sitting and looking straight ahead while someone comes in from the side to slice your cornea open sound maybe a little less like it belongs in a fucking torture nightmare.

I imagine them with big, stretched grey faces, head tilted back, oscillating gently as they squint down their noses at your clever, well-meaning words, a sandy "No... No. Th...that just won't do... No." blindly feeling its way through their pursed sun-damaged-paint lips, and their tendril-like, creaky, arthritic Grim-Reaper digit slowly clicking on the downvote button. Then, at the very corner of one side of their mouth, through the speck of off-white froth, a slight twitch expresses their absolute condensed joy at being able to cast a globule of their sadness and malaise toward you, repercussion-free. Fuck haters.
