I take pride in careful driving so when I screw up and get honked at, it bugs me for hours... I try and chalk it up to experience and do my best not to make the same mistake twice but it still gnaws at me.

I was driving on a sidestreet once. It has this curve with limited visibility. I have a loud car. As I start the curve I see some people walking their dog in the middle of the street, which is promptly followed by their scolding, angry words to "drive slower", when I was probably going even 5 under the posted speed limit of 25 MPH.

Am I wrong here?

Also, this was like 2 years ago and it still bothers me.

[–]Jerameme 5 points6 points ago

No, they should not have been in the middle of the road at night. That's what the "side of the road" is for.

[–]chefjessphd 5 points6 points ago

Definitely not wrong, why do you even have to ask? They're just dumb as fuck. No worries.

Yeah, I guess I know that, but the way they reacted makes me subconsciously second-guess myself.

haha I was just driving down a street 2 months ago, it was 35MPH i was going 30, an old lady yelled at me to slow down..... I know what you mean though... I have many things that still bug me!

[–]surfsupNS 1 point2 points ago

that is exactly the point of honking. Thank you for taking into consideration why exactly you got honked at. keep it up. the problem is the drivers that have no idea why they got honked at, or are to ignorant to even realize that they were the target of the honking.

I still think about some of the times when I've been honked at/yelled at YEARS later.

Some self-righteous people will honk at you even if you've done nothing wrong, just wrong in their minds.

[–]alphanovember 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Some fuckers will honk for no good reason at all. If you don't reach 30mph within 700ms of the light turning green the impatient idiots will stare blaring. A minority, thankfully, but still exist.

Unless you t-bone me or drive really recklessly, I never use my horn. A quick flash of the head lights gets the message across.

Really?

I'm the best driver out there, and if someone honks at me, they're ALWAYS in the wrong. If they honk at me, I honk back. If they decide to escalate and start riding my ass, I carefully brake check them.

I'm a conscientious biker. I stop at stop signs and lights, wait for the light to turn green, yield right-of-way when appropriate, etc. Three times I've been yelled at by angry people while on my bike, and each time it stuck with me. I can remember each incident clearly. On one of those occasions, I may have been the one in the wrong, but the anger of a random stranger screaming at me was very upsetting, for some reason.

[–]typingfromwork 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Same here. This morning I got yelled at by another biker while I was biking. Still thinking about it.

I should just let it go, really.

[–]godin_sdxt 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, think of it from their perspective. The way our system works, cyclists can do no wrong. You swerve into traffic for a second and you get hit? The driver is responsible. You don't stop for a stoplight and get hit? The driver is responsible. You hold the potential to completely and irreversibly fuck up someone's life just because you made a mistake.

If it were me, I'd scream at you too, because I had just come within inches of hefty fines, quadrupling insurance rates, and possibly jail time because of your momentary fuck-up. Oh, and I could kiss my job goodbye if I could no longer afford to drive. At least when it's two cars, the court system actually considers who caused the collision.

[–]ioduae 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, I guess now I have a fourth incident to add to my list. :)

It really frustrates me when cyclists don't obey traffic laws. Partly because of the reasons you mentioned, partly because I believe that laws should apply to everyone on the roads equally, and partly because bikers who don't follow the rules give all bikers a bad reputation.

In the incident where I was in the wrong, I was confused about where a left turn was coming up, and I had crossed into the left lane a block early. I didn't think that it would make much sense to cross two lanes of traffic twice to use the bike lane for half a block. There was no 'near miss', I didn't cause any driver to take evasive action, there was just an angry woman who assumed I was an asshole, and she was screaming at me.

If you believe that I deserve to be screamed at for a mistake, you are certainly entitled to your opinion.

Also, if one of us makes a momentary mistake, and you hit me with your car, yes, you may be fined. I may die.

[–]godin_sdxt 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If there was no near miss, then fine. I'm just saying, the reality is that one wrong move by a pedestrian or cyclist could be the end of my ability to drive for the rest of my life, not to mention possible manslaughter charges, and it scares the shit out of me sometimes.

[–]Gunwild 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

While that's true, one wrong move by a cyclist could cost them their lives. They don't want an accident anymore than you do.

[–]godin_sdxt 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sure, but my point was that even in cases where it's clearly the cyclist's fault, such as when a cyclist pulls out in front of a car and there's no possible way for the car to stop quickly enough, the driver of the car takes all the blame. I guess the moral is "don't fuck up", or even better, ride on the sidewalk. Getting hit by a bike is not usually going to kill a pedestrian unless they have a pre-existing condition, and even then, it's much easier for a pedestrian to simply step out of the way than it is for a bike to avoid a car. Personally, I always bike on the sidewalk. Yes, I might get a ticket, but it's better than getting killed.

[–]Moistcabbage 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's illegal.

[–]godin_sdxt 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm aware of that... It's a case of a small fine that's unlikely to even be enforced vs. getting creamed by a car, ruining both your life and that of the unlucky driver who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

[–]battering_maam 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I wish that the actions of cyclists in my city more often supported your point.

[–]ioduae 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's why I think that bikers should follow the traffic laws. I'm with you there.

[–]Mofeux 3 points4 points ago

You must not live in the USA then. Here you can mow down a half dozen people and get away with it because "you didn't see them" and get off without charges.

[–]exdiggtwit 0 points1 point ago

Or, you know, just the guilt that you hurt/killed another human being regardless of who fucked up. Cause that shit sticks with you.

This is what gets me the most... you don't care about your life? Cool for you but don't fuck me over emotionally by involving me in your crappy world.

[–]godin_sdxt 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, the emotional aspect is certainly a big part of it, but losing your entire career and/or spending decades in jail isn't anything to sneeze at.

I want to thank you for being courteous. A lot of the cyclist in my areas are seemingly oblivious to traffic and make moronic / last second decisions. Trust me, the last thing I want to do is have a car/cyclist collision! It is easier for the cars & safer for the cyclist when you are predictable and follow the street laws. If you do this, I will remember you and I will thank you (if I have the opportunity).

I had a biker the other day ride in the street during rush hour. He used his hand signals, and pedaled his ass off to try to keep up with moving traffic. Once I had the opportunity, I waved at him to thank him for being conscientious.

What is the point of honking? Honking before trying to avoid an accident is stupid, honking after is pointless. Honking for any other reason is usually frowned upon.

[–]twistedtrick 1 point2 points ago

Weird...everytime I get honked at I instantly flip off towards the direction of the horn as a reflex, same thing when someone yells anything loud at me and I'm not paying attention to them at that moment.

I've accidentally given friends the bird a few times because of this, no idea how or why it became a reflex but it is what it is.

[–]Daveyd325 2 points3 points ago

FUCK YEAH DUDE! This stuff haunts me. The first couple of days im driving, i come to a 4 way intersection. The stop sign said "4-way" but little did i know it was wrong. So i pull out in front of some lady and she just starts blaring her horn. For the rest of the day i thought of ways i could make it up to her if i ever find her.

[–]loridee 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree. I wish there was a way of telling the person "I'm really a good driver! Honestly! I made that one mistake, sure, but typically I'm careful. Stop judging me!".

[–]Varkeer 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I hate having to drive over the speed limit to keep up with traffic.

I am very punctual, and am always early to where I need to go, provided I know ahead of time that I need to be somewhere.

I want to see stricter rules and regulations on who can drive, and what they can drive.

Having a High School equivalent reading comprehension would help too. So you know that everyone on the road can interpret what the see with traffic signs and situations accordingly.

I would also like to see very severe penalties for people that cause accidents from faults of their own, acts of God notwithstanding obviously, or the result of another's error.

Drunk driving should be a big deal, or people under the influence of any impairing drug for that matter.

With technology we could have a citizen report reckless driving and offense by inputting in their license plate, to then give an updated profile for the police. You would prevent people from messing with the system since they could then get in trouble for false accusations.

[–]whiteryno 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You were in the left lane...going slow and holding up the flow of traffic. Keep to the right ya bum!

[–]sylver_dragon 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In general, I just assume the person honking is an impatient asshole and move on with life. I would love for cars to either have their horns removed completely (I know there are real uses for them, how often do those happen?); or, in order to activate the horn, you must attach electrodes to your nut sack/labia. Anytime you honk, you get an electric shock. If it's really important enough to you to honk that you will take a zap to the tender bits, then honk away.

The only reason other people don't feel bad about it is they invent a reason that they were in the right.

[–]Lilday 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well...Heres a story that you probably wont bother to read, but I'll throw a TLDR at the bottom.

A few months after I passed my driving test I got a job with a company car. With (almost no - other than driving lessons) real world driving experience, I was tasked with driving 7 (including myself) workers from Liverpool to London on Mondays, drive around London for the week (to and from worksites) and then return from London to Liverpool on Fridays.

I had never seen a roundabout with traffic lights on it. But apparently there was one where I was working. My brain totally failed me and I drove around the roundabout as normal - not believing the traffic lights were for me. (Traffic lights on a roundabout?! Really?!) So I blew through about three red lights without noticing, although I was wondering why the 6 workers in the car were all shouting and screaming at me.

I couldn't make out what they were saying with all the shouting, and I couldn't stop in the middle of a roundabout, and so I kept going until several cars started beeping at me, and then I realized what I had done.

So yeah my remaining months working for that company were surrounded by people shouting "DAVID STOP THERE IS A RED LIGHT" at every red light. And people feeling the need to alert me to any red lights in general.

TLDR Drove through several red lights without noticing until it was too late and never lived it down.

To this day I think...How the fuck did I escape an accident. It was a fucking busy rounadbout off of a motorway junction. 40mph speed limit IIRC

Usually when someone honks at me It's because they've fucked up and erroneously think it's my fault.

Occasionally, they're in the right.

Other than striving to be in the right, I don't care much. Life is short. You can't be hung up on every single slip-up. As long as the effort to do well is there, it's enough to show up in your driving habits consistently.

Hey, I'm not sure how, but you managed to completely fuck up that meme. Its a socially awkward penguin. What the fuck is socially awkward about a fucking car honking at you and then it consuming you for hours after? Nothing. You know what is socially awkward? Going to a bar, spilling a drink on the girl you like, and then forgetting the names of all of her room mates you met last week end. That's fucking socially awkward.

People need to make a fucking "Loser Lion" meme or some shit and stop fucking up memes that are already shitty to start with.
