what if i already have a dog that looks like that when it yawns?
[–]snarkyaardvark 13 points14 points15 points 11 months ago*
When ever my dog yawns that big, I slip hand in there. When my unsuspecting canine friend closes his mouth he gets this pissed/puzzled look on his face that is just priceless.
Oh, come on, like you have never done this.

FUN FACT! After 60 years of working, Scientists in Russia have successfully domesticated the fox. I don't know how a person goes about getting one, sadly.
[–]Dialogue_Dub 7 points8 points9 points 11 months ago
There is a documentary called "The Secret Life of the Dog" by the BBC that details the foxes that stemmed from this study.
The part on the foxes starts here
Continues here
Fun Fact: As they bred the foxes for behavior (nice with nice, mean with mean), the foxes that lead to domestication began to have floppy ears and curled tails.
[–]lightlynamed 9 points10 points11 points 11 months ago
You go up there and buy one if I remember right. You have to stay for a number of months while they teach you how to take care of them. And you also have to pay several hundred dollars to get the fox back to the US and legally own it (in most states its considered an exotic pet, and if memory serves, you need a special permit for it).
Fun fact, apparently foxes can smell VERY strongly.
Source: My ex-girlfriend who's studying animal behavior and has decided that shes going to spend a summer over in Russia studying with said scientists and come back with one of the foxes.

[–]ronsta 9 points10 points11 points 11 months ago
got me one. they're adorable and easy to care for, but very independent, so don't get them if you want a play dog.
[–]yer_momma 8 points9 points10 points 11 months ago
Both of the Shibas I've had want to play all the time. They love attention, fetching, wrestling, walking, jogging and every other form of attention I give them. The female is skinny and got the same coloring as a red fox, it gets annoying after the 1000th time you hear "OMG is that a fox?"
Unfortunately they don't always listen very well as they are very strong willed too, the male often gets loose by slipping off the leash or running out the door and thinks its a hide and seek game when you chase after him. During a jog tonight actually he got loose near a main road and ran strait into the street and hit the side of a moving car. Fortunately Shiba's are pretty tough too and all he got was a bloody nose and a black eye. Hopefully he'll learn to stay out of the road from now on.
[–]WoollyMittens 6 points7 points8 points 11 months ago
[–]ColPaint 4 points5 points6 points 11 months ago
Are you using a collar when walking/jogging?
If so, you might want to switch that out for a harness.
[–]yer_momma 1 point2 points3 points 11 months ago
I have both, but he keeps eating/chewing through the harnesses. I'm going to try to find a non-chewable one.
[–]ronsta 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
Is there a good harness for Shibas? The last two I've had she miraculously escapes out of by lifting her paws high and pulling her neck back.
She's a bitch...pun intended.
[–]Kingcrowing 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
I also have a Shiba, she's 6 months old and has the same fox-like coloring.
It does get annoying having everyone ask what she is, but she's super friendly, loves kids, likes to cuddle a bit, and always likes to play.
[–]Ignatavicius 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
I have a one year old shiba as well. Actually had a lady flag me down while driving to ask if he was a fox.

My uncle has a pet red fox. He actually shot his mom, and he was on her body when to get her. He said it was the saddest thing, so he took him home, my cousin named it Todd(anyone get where the name came from?) And now Todd is the nicest little devil in the world. He's well behaved, just loves to play. I guess him and my uncle's mini goat get along like best friends.
[–]insomniafox 8 points9 points10 points 11 months ago
todd from fox and the hound? Why did your Uncle shoot the mom if he actually had a heart for the animals?!
Kept on gettin at his neighbors chickens. He doesn't go fox hunting or anything, it might be the only fox he's ever shot.
baby fox need his chickin' dinna'
[–]bwaaains 5 points6 points7 points 11 months ago
Reminds me of Bambi, but with a slightly happier outcome.
[–]noshoesnoshirt 4 points5 points6 points 11 months ago
Awwwwwww, isn't that cute? Killed his mother and now he's well behaved.
Learned him good from the git go.
[–]noshoesnoshirt 1 point2 points3 points 11 months ago
Well, you have a point there, even if you expressed it as sarcastically as I did. You can't let the varmints get to your chickens.
Sorry he had to kill the fox.
[–]Luke2012 1 point2 points3 points 11 months ago
He actually shot his mom, and he was on her body when to get her.
There's too many ways to interpret that.
[–]AdonisChrist 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
I love your cousin.
[–]Ras_H_Tafari 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
Tod is the Old English word for fox
[–]Niatnuom 5 points6 points7 points 11 months ago
When I was a kid my uncle raised a litter after the mother was killed. He raised them to be wild but they would hang out at his house quite often and he'd keep feeding them. They eventually quit coming around, for whatever reasons. I've wished since then that I could raise some. Totally awesome animals.
[–]sachspie 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
The fox and the hound? I can't remember their names.
[–]YOUR-UNCLE 2 points3 points4 points 11 months ago
They are adorable but creepy as fuck. When they howl it sounds EXACTLY like a crying baby. I hear them outside in the middle of the night sometimes, and it scares the shit out of me.
[–]cI_-__-_Io 1 point2 points3 points 11 months ago
Came here to say this. There are a lot of foxes in London's suburbs and when they howl at night it sounds like people getting stabbed. You get used to it, but the first times are pretty horrific.
[–]Stevoh 4 points5 points6 points 11 months ago

[–]tling 2 points3 points4 points 11 months ago
Hate to say it, but many foxes have latent rabies, and keeping your distance happens automatically after learning this. They've made great strides in reducing rabies the past 15 years by putting baits with a rabies vaccine in Arctic areas: http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/en/Business/Rabies/2ColumnSubPage/STEL02_166319.html
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 11 months ago
Just get an tamed one shipped from Russia, only for 8k. I doubt they have rabies.
[–]mastermayhem[S] 6 points7 points8 points 11 months ago

A lady and a man were going door to door in my neighborhood selling some kind of dog for 2 grand a tail. Wtf?
[–]keeservonp 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
Yea, confusion ensued. And they were in a banged up Buick. Something was amiss in this situation. I passed.
[–]busted0201 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
When I was a kid my friend's family bought a purebred something or other dog for over $2000.
I was like, you can just get one for $50 at the humane society!
[–]Twyll 1 point2 points3 points 11 months ago
Considering that very, very few of them even exist, since they're the result of a single long-running breeding experiment, plus they have to be shipped from Russia... yeah, that's not a bad price. XD
[–]Crossfox17 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
Pure bred dogs can be 2k, 5k more for a fox isn't bad for someone that is financially equipped.
What I meant was that there are many people willing to spend that kind of money for a pet.
[–]yer_momma 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
and a mini giraffe
[–]Unfuck -2 points-1 points0 points 11 months ago
That's mostly due to the fact that they're shipped out of Russia. You can buy foxes locally in the US for a couple hundred.
Not "tame," but "domesticated." Tame = has been trained to be okay with humans, domesticated = has been bred to be okay with humans. The Russian foxes are the results of decades of selective breeding through a program at the Institute of Cytology and Genetics in Siberia. (I first heard about them in psychology class!) Any foxes you can buy in the US were pups of wild foxes, which are not as physiologically adapted to captivity.
[–]ThisNameIsOriginal -6 points-5 points-4 points 11 months ago
In the pictures it looks like there in wire cages =(
[–]Twyll 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
I think they're kept in wire cages in Russia before they're imported here, but other pictures show the foxes living inside a house, so at least they're kept in better conditions once they're stateside. Considering that they would be fur foxes if they weren't being sold as pets, it's an infinitely better situation either way!
[–]geusebio -7 points-6 points-5 points 11 months ago
They're a fur breeder. Bad furry. Bad. ಠ_ಠ
[–]korosarum 7 points8 points9 points 11 months ago
Bad furry. Bad. ಠ_ಠ

[–]korosarum 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
Think about the act of yiffing? Sure! :3
[–]drunkrabbit22 9 points10 points11 points 11 months ago
They also breed domesticated foxes. That you can buy. And Love.
[–]Twyll -1 points0 points1 point 11 months ago
Actually, the domesticated foxes started out as fur foxes decades ago when the project was first started (the original breeding stock came from a fur factory whose owners wanted to see if the foxes could be bred to fare better in captivity). But they're not fur foxes any more! Mostly because the selective breeding process made them more likely to get spotted coats that aren't "high-quality" enough... :/ but still, not fur foxes any more! :3 Also, buying the foxes helps to fund the ongoing breeding experiment that created them, which will hopefully cause foxes to be seen as a "pet" animal and not a "commodity" animal, which will lead to decreased use of foxes for fur!
[–]muffinheart 4 points5 points6 points 11 months ago
I have a friend who owns a pet fox. She says they don't behave themselves as well as other domestic animals and that it freaks out any time it sees anyone who it doesn't recognise.
[–]Aserapha 20 points21 points22 points 11 months ago

I have a fennec fox. While he's a very loving pet, I wouldn't recommend a fox to just anybody. They're tonnes of work and never fully domesticated (just tame to those they're familiar with). sibfoxes are different, though.
[–]soupdawg 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
I was at a golf course in Louisiana and a fox kept walking up to us. Coolest thing I saw while there.

They have been domesticated in Russia. You can order one online, although I assume it would be extremely expensive. They have been selectively breeding foxes for 51 years in a small facility in Russia. Incidentally, a large portion of the resulting domestic foxes have white and black or silver coats. Their temperament has been described as a cross between a dog and a cat.

Nova did a show called Dogs Decoded. It shows the similarities in gray foxes and domesticated dogs. Even though wolves are closer in DNA comparison to dogs, gray foxes have been examined for decades and breeded to make a domesticated fox.
Dogs decoded is currently on netflix streaming or check out pbs.org

That's a TV show right there.
[–]niugiovanni -8 points-7 points-6 points 11 months ago
Nature is not yours to have. Don't we have enough creatures to hold captive?
[–]BrightAndDark 3 points4 points5 points 11 months ago
Ideally, humans should carefully steward the wild ecosystems left remaining on the planet in an effort to retain genetic and behavioral diversity until we can figure out how to use it (or not) properly.
Pragmatically, the species that are flourishing most at present (as measured by reproduction, range, and persistence) are those we've domesticated and come to appreciate or depend upon. For non-human species at present, its the old "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em."
We owe our current "success" as a species to being the best, most diverse mutualists on the planet. Asking humans to repress our domestication instinct is requesting that we relinquish an enormous evolutionary advantage that is probably hard-wired into our behavior at this point. I can't say you're wrong, but asking humans to stop taming things will be about as effective as asking legumes to stop nodulating.
[–]niugiovanni 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
I agree in the futility of my cause but nonetheless feel an obligation to continue it.
[–]BrightAndDark 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
It's not just futile, though. In the interest of those species, it's actually counterproductive.
No problem, I missed my orangered and didn't realize I was engaged.
The situation is what it is. A release of all domesticated animals is dangerous, unhealthy, inhumane, and unrealistic. I have a problem with the continued breeding and cultivation of animals as our captive entertainment. We have created domestic animals and bred a living thing down to a submissive and subservient plaything. In several ways that is disturbing to me. To me, ideally, we would let the current population of domesticated animals live healthy lives as they currently do but restrict the continued breeding of living things for our amusement.
[–]subcarrier 3 points4 points5 points 11 months ago
You're right. I'll just release my dog into the wild.
I'm sure it will be fine. What's the worst that could happen?
Your reply seems to have little to do with my argument. I cited the already captive animals as available and did nothing to suggest you must release your dog. Instead of your slippery-slope fallacy let's consider my actual argument. Should a wild kit be taken from the forest and held for personal enjoyment?
[–]noshoesnoshirt 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
I concur.
Unfortunately, judging by the downvotes, most of the folks here don't, so I give you this.
[–]DrDreampop 1 point2 points3 points 11 months ago
I hated watching this movie as a child. 'Twas creepy as fuck.
Sort of my point, I suppose.
Who wants to be a pet?
Yeah, I guess I put myself in the place of a captive creature and don't like the feeling. I expected heavy downvoting as a thread like this will overwhelmingly attract those who agree and want to gush over fantasies of entrapping "cute" animals for themselves.
[–]noshoesnoshirt 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Yep.
These are a lot of the same people who grew up on "I can haz cheeseburger", so you have to understand their background.
I don't like to judge the values of other folks, but craving the domestication of a wild animal as a pet doesn't fit in my viewpoint.
I had not thought of the ICHC Effect (As I'd like to coin it - If you don't mind me stealing your theory.) You're probably completely correct.
[–]sarcastic_smartass 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
Indeed, we need to just stick with killing them instead of domesticating them.
Or, instead of your extreme assertion, we could consider restricting breeding programs as a first step. There are quite a few animals in shelters who are overlooked for the breeding of designer dogs or purebreds. Those dogs aren't killed based upon my argument but, instead, based upon the believe that these animals are for us to play with and create to our specifications.
[–]sarcastic_smartass 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
Make it illegal to breed animals.
It sounds like you and I are on the same page sir!
Not just pets either. All animals. Release all the cows into the wild.
