Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

A post recently in which the OP's gf's...father(?)... made a remark about it being the anniversary of a day he was assaulted by several at work for being gay - he was a dancer of some sort. The attack ended badly for the attackers and they left him alone after that.

[–]chimpwithalimp[!] 56 points57 points ago

[–]Se7en_Sinner 34 points35 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

His coworkers assumed he was homosexual just because he was a male ballet dancer. So they tried to jump/rape him to "fuck the gay out of him". He was physically tougher because of the dancing and beat the fuck out of them instead.

[–]lordlicorice 10 points11 points ago

[–]hirashirou 5 points6 points ago

[–]AbstractLogic 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A male ballet dancer was threatened to "have the gay fucked out of him" by 3 guys. The ballet dancer was of course very strong due to the nature of what he does (heaving 100lbs over his head 100 time a day). When attacked he demolished the 3 pervy's and continued his day.

[–]Sine_qua_non 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not hold, balance. Once they're up, you lock the arm and shoulder and ... balance is your friend. No, not easy, but nowhere near as hard as one would imagine.

[–]vinniedamac 34 points35 points ago

Those girls probably weigh about 100 lbs. Still impressive though.

[–]mmmmmkay 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've been the girl in this stunt before. I weighed 120. It's not just about the strength though. A lot of timing and technique are involved on both sides of the partnership that make it easier to toss 120 lbs through the air.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I dunno man they've gotta be strong to be able to do that, and muscle is pretty heavy.

[–]Tetha 65 points66 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The scary thing is... At first I thought "Impressive strength, especially in the arm, but she also jumps"... and then I realized: After she is horizontal, the guy produces pretty much the entire upward velocity, and he can stabilize that with his arm.. just holy shit.

[–]flawedless 38 points39 points ago

I'm a male cheerleader. Some insight: Yes this is one of the hardest things you can possibly do in cheering. Yes he has to be INCREDIBLY strong No, it is not all strength, most of cheering is technique.

In case anyone was interested :)

[–]entyfresh 41 points42 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can tell he's legit because of the smiley at the end. That shit is fundamental to cheering technique.

[–]MisterBastahrd 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think his technique is to be strong as fuck.

[–]immerc 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

By "cheering" do you mean "leading people in cheers by doing gymnastics"?

[–]khanfusion 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not a cheerleader of any sort, but yeah.... this is more technique than anything. Obviously you must be strong enough to support between 90 and 100 with one hand, but the upward momentum provided by her jumping means you aren't LIFTING that much weight. However, you do still have to maintain the balance, which is probably hard as hell.

[–]diodelogick 25 points26 points ago

Absolutely correct. Cheer-leading is the most dangerous high school sport. However, under Title IX, it is not technically considered a sport and has much lower safety regulations. I suggest watching the Penn & Teller Bullshit episode on cheer-leading.

The last 30 seconds of 2/2 made me tear up...damn thats rough

[–]jadeycakes 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh yes. I cheered for 7 years and I saw some nasty injuries. The worst I saw was a 14 year old girl who fell out of a deadman drop. That's when the girl who is in the air falls either forward or backward and 3-4 people catch her and then pop her back up straight in the air. No one caught her. She had two open fractures in her arm.

[–]poiro 30 points31 points ago

[–]reidrhollander 41 points42 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As someone who played division 1 football as an undergrad and cheered as a JD/MBA student I can say without hesitation that cheer is more challenging and a lot more fun.

A lot of people don't realize the kinds of stunts we can do but are forbidden from doing during a game. Going to an open gym would scare the shit out of most people! I never did quite figure out how the girls put that much trust in me.

[–]jakebluu 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You havE restrictions during games?

[–]reidrhollander 32 points33 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah. There are regulating bodies that say what you can and can't do. The most restrictive games are basketball because you are on a hardcourt rather than grass.

None of this is illegal because it is in competition but here is an idea. You can guess what might go on when not following any rules.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTs8fob7uyg

Edit: I should also say that you don't do stuff like this at games because you want 100% of game stunts to hit. You really can't take chances with extremely advanced stuff.

I have a hyperflexibility issue and do it at least partially several times a month-- I'm pretty used to it. except when it's a bad one I can't put back in myself, and even then it's a pretty casual "damnit, <person>, can you pull on my arm a bit and help me put it back in place? The trick-- keep dried marigold (calendula) on hand, and put it in tea to help numb the joint pain.

I also have this problem, it's been this way since I was a very small child. The earliest instance I can remember was waking up with it dislocated, walking downstairs crying, my mom not knowing what to do, and me sitting on the couch awkwardly until my dad came home which seemed like all day but I honestly have no idea, it was before I was even 5 but I still remember it.

Second time was probably first grade, was going down the slide and slipped, arm hit the side of the slide popped out before i got to the bottom, laid there the rest of recess waiting for the teachers to call my dad, the gym teacher(a former basketball coach) insisted he could do it, and i'm sure he could have, but I absolutely would not let him, dad had to leave work, came and rescued me, talked me through what he was doing, assured me that the gym teacher could help, but most importantly explained how to do it myself

from there i hardly remember it, mostly a minor annoyance, may have had the teachers help once or twice, may have done it myself, don't remember. i feel like during puberty it almost never happened, i've always had issues when raising my left arm too high over my head when stretching and stuff, where i feel it start to slip and catch it usually with a startled gasp to accompany a quick and awkward lowering of my arm

then it started happening again when i started having my girlfriend stay with me a few years ago(we live together now) i would put my arm under the pillow ,and up and sleep on it funny, both of our heads on the pillow, i specifically remember scaring the shit out of her one night as i jumped out of bed with my arm held way over my head in a very wierd fashion, it wasn't a little bit dislocated, my arm was escaping. popped(there is no better word) it back in and went back to sleep.

so yea moral of the story is it still hurts but you do get used to it, it takes about 20 or 30 times and the first couple you think you might die, but it just becomes an annoyance after awhile

i'm not a badass though, wiped out on my longboard a few weeks ago, and thought i had dislocated my hip, i didn't even come close, barely bruised it. i was terrified though, and i assure you if i ever did dislocate my hip, i would do two things, cry, and call my dad. even though he's 2000 miles away

100% true. For me it started out as the every now-and-then dislocate as a cheerleader. Not being caught correctly or tumbling mishaps. Now it is in my sleep and when I throw a ball. I have to always be conscious of my sleep position. buh.

All i can think of is dead and crippled cheerleaders. If they were formally organized as a sport, they wouldn't let kids do shit this dangerous.

[–]sodiumNA11 39 points40 points ago

That is called a rewind. It's a common move in coed cheerleading.

I think it looks pretty sick. The chick is doing a front flip from about 7 feet up. That would scare the fuck out of me.

[–]lurkerturneduser 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not the flip itself, but the part where she comes out of the tuck and lies in supine position mid-air, 5 feet up, with hopes that her partner catches her with one hand. That would scare the shit out of me. Maybe I'm just not trusting enough.

But a rewind with an adult woman and with one hand? Seriously? o_0

[–]reidrhollander 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not sure what you mean by adult. I would classify every girl I cheered with in college an adult. What is funny is when we go to nationals at Disney (where this was taken) and some of the flyers can't go on rides because they aren't tall enough.

[–]geordilaforge 4 points5 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was thinking maybe you were referring to teen-aged cheerleaders. And that's hilarious about the rides, they must be 100 lbs or less also?

Back to my question, you did a "reverse" this with one hand like this guy...?

EDIT: "reverse" thing NOT "reverse" this

[–]reidrhollander 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In my prime I could but probably not now. So much of elite stunting is having a great partner that you trust and have worked with for a while. What is important to know is the girl (known as the flyer) is doing half the work even after she is up. If she doesn't stay tight and pull her feet together as hard as she can the whole time this whole thing comes down.

Usually during a football game opposing squads will have a friendly competition to see who can hold a cupie (both her feet in one hand extended) the longest. Really comes down to the girls because once the base gets his skeleton aligned it is not hard to hold the position.

Edit: I never had a partner less than 125. My first partner was about 135. These girls are full of muscle as they are incredible tumblers as well.

[–]britta 32 points33 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yep! I don't see how the 'gay cheerleader' stereotype has held on for so long. Male cheerleaders are are some of the strongest most obviously not gay guys I've met and touch a lot of cute lady parts on a daily basis.

[–]niceville 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Are you not familiar with the "gay men work out a lot" stereotype? It fits right in with the male cheerleader one.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know right? What's this straight men are strong, gay men are weak wussies business.

[–]geordilaforge 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Seriously?

Dudes do this with one hand? One hand?

I'm just trying to clarify that part, because I rarely see male cheerleaders as big as the guy catching her. They're bigger guys but I don't usually see lineman-looking guys flipping cheerleaders.

[–]immerc 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The stereotype exists because it is in comparison to the athletes in competitive sports.

Athletes in competitive sports play to win. If they look good doing it, that's a bonus, but winning is the key. It is essentially taking the instinctive drive to fight other people, and slightly civilizing it. This is especially true of contact sports involving using your strength against players on the other team (football, rugby, soccer, hockey, basketball).

Gymastics-type events, including gymnastics, cheerleading, figure skating, etc. are seen as more feminine because the goal isn't to directly beat another person in a on-on-one competition of strength and/or skill, but rather to impress judges by doing amazing feats while looking very good doing it. Looking good is key, and often the way people involved in these kinds of activities dress is a key part of their success or failure.

Gay and feminine are often used interchangeably, and so a more feminine event, one that's more violent and more based on looks, is seen as more gay.

I wold say 50% of any good Division 1 cheer programs have several couples that can do these. When you know the technique it is a lot easier than it looks. Not to say it is a piece of cake. This was taken at Disney which means it was likely at UCA nationals meaning the people are really good. I am part of the 50% that can do this if I have my full time partner to work with and not just a random team member.

Here is someone who is a real badass. This is orders of magnitude harder.

Curious as to how you got into cheerleading as a male. Clearly to be competitive it is not a second choice due to a lack of physical fitness, and while it is compelling being around and interacting with fit and flexible females, how do you get past the initial miasma from your peers? Other male cheerleaders who responded to the thread, please feel free to respond as well.

edit: Is it a natural progression from male gymnastics perhaps?

[–]wurtis16 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I used to breakdance and practice capoeira, the cheer coach asked me and my friends to try out, we all made it. I tried out for college my freshman year and made it there too, it's a lot of fun and fucking hard as shit. I played football track and soccer and this is the hardest by far.

And most people believe competitive cheerleading isn't a sport...

[–]immerc 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Doing pushups isn't really sport either, but it involves a lot of physical activity. Stocking shelves involves a ton of physical activity, as well as some coordination and balance, but I doubt many people would consider it a sport.

Most people think "competitive sports" when they think sports. Physical activities that may be demanding, but where there are no winners or losers (say Yoga) are not considered sports. Other people don't consider things that involve being rated by subjective judges to be sports, so bowling counts because there are objective rules, but diving doesn't, because a subjective judge is asked to rate the quality of the performance. Finally, when there's direct head-to-head competition, it's seen as more of a sport than when there are separate events, like comparing a basketball game to a free throw competition.

It isn't surprising that a lot of people don't see cheerleading as a sport because it is a pretty recent phenomenon that it is judged at all, and because so much of the emphasis is on how things look, rather than on pure head-to-head competitive activities.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The term 'sport' is extremely general, and can include essentially anything that has a physical component. Hopping can be called a sport.
