Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

I clicked on the comments only to verify that this would be at the top. Glad to see everything is ship-shape. Carry on.

Lief Erikson. The real estate developer who set the standard for all time.

His father had discovered an Island with plenty of Ice and lots of vegetation. He named it "Iceland" and had trouble getting people to move there. His son, Lief, discovered an Island that was almost all ice with little vegetation. Having learned his lesson, he named it "Greenland."

Today you never see a development named 'clear cut' or 'barren hell." They all have names like 'forrest glen," or 'the Woodlands."

Lief Ericson, a man 1,000 years ahead of time.

His father(Eirik the Red) didn't discover Iceland, he discovered Greenland(or at least founded the first settlement there). People had been living in Iceland for at least two centuries by then, or since Ingólfur Arnarsson discovered it around the year 867.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Ingólfur Arnarsson didn't discover it, Naddoddur, Garðar and Hrafna-Flóki stopped there before him. Ingólfur Arnarsson was the first permanent settler.

While much more correct than Mark_Lincoln's error, Ingólfur Arnarsson did not discover Iceland. According to Landnáma it was Naddoddur who got lost on his way from Norway to the Faroe Islands. Then came Garðar Svavarsson from Sweden, who also stumbled on it, but figured out it was an island, and then (Hrafna-)Flóki Vilgerðarson, who gave up after staying for one winter. It was he who gave it the name "Iceland" after seeing drift ice (he lived in Barðaströnd). Then Ingólfur and his brother came and were the first to settle permanently.

That said, there likely were Celtic settlers there before.

RÓLEGUR, KIEFER! ...Engar áhyggjur af mér og minni þekkingu á þessu, ég náði þessu öllu í grunnskóla, menntaskóla og svo aftur núna í sagnfræði. Það var raun bara formsatriði að ég skrifaði ,,discovered'' í staðinn fyrir ,,first permanent settlement", þar sem ég nennti ekki að hafa þetta mikið lengra og grunaði sterklega að enginn hefði mikinn áhuga á því yfrleitt.

Váá.. róleg. :) Replying in English out of politeness for others that may be reading it (I'm not the one downvoting you):

Don't worry about writing things that you think nobody is interested in. They can always skip reading it (it's different from talking/listening). You are probably more interesting than you think you are.

Second, when somebody corrects you, this is by no means an attack on you and there is no need to explain or defend your reasons. Except of course when you think (know) you were correct. :) I was not worried about your knowledge, historian or not, just merely correcting a false statement. Much like you were doing yourself.

In any case: Relevant. :)

Ég skil að það sé ábyggilega auðvelt að lesa þetta svar mitt á annan hátt að þetta var meint, það er mikill munur á þýðingunni eftir því hvernig þetta er sagt svosum. Ég held að þú hafir lesið dálítið öðruvísi í þetta en ætlunin var að þetta myndi skiljast ;)

Then they named America "Vinland", thinking about the future United States of Winland, but some italian guy fucked things up.

Explain

[–]goldteamrules 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Basically, Leif Ericson was believed to be the first European to land in the New World, way back in the 1100's. The Wiki article on him.
Essentially, it's Columbus Day for historical hipsters.

I saw a statue in Kenmore Square in Boston today. It had flowers on it and I did not know why. Turns out it's Leif the Lucky himself, decorated in honor of his day. Why is there a statue of Leif Ericson in Boston? Your friendly neighborhood crackpot 19th-century scientist/amateur archaeologist!
