"..we only let atheists in heaven." (i.imgur.com)

This is actually from my shitty webcomic. I appreciate it getting posted every week, but it would be awesome if the next time it gets reposted it would be linked to the actual site.

Your shitty webcomic is a lot better than most of the ones I've seen. If I had to nitpick this particular one, I'd suggest that "I'm an atheist" should be "I was an atheist" on the basis that it's very hard to be one when you're discussing it with god.
[–]rubeninterrupted 26 points27 points28 points 10 months ago
That's probably true. But I think he was hedging his bets, just in case it was a hallucination.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
I thought it should be "I was an atheist" on the basis that he had died. One usually uses the past tense when speaking of the dead.
[–]Weakgrip -1 points0 points1 point 10 months ago
Ah, but there lies a problem with your reasoning. We can follow two paths of perspective based off reading this comic strip:
The point of view from the character within the comic.
The point of view of the cartoonist.
We, the reader, make assumptions based off this information. Now your conclusion is based off of one from the standpoint of the cartoonist but it conflicts entirely with the one based off the character. Allow me to explain; the character here simply assumes that this is god but there is no evidence for this assumption. In fact, the general acceptance of this statement from the God character is in direct conflict with the logic He supposedly imbued us with. It may seem like a dick move, it would be illogical for the character to not ask for proof. For all the character knows this may merely be a dream, or a hallucination, or perhaps even an incredibly elaborate trick being played on him. While I do know and accept the funny joke that the cartoonist is trying to get across with this comic strip, it however does not comply with the character in the comic. At the end of the day it is incredibly important to remember the "What does God need with a spaceship?" scenario.

But there's a 3 pixel logo in the bottom left corner. Isn't that enough? Why do you webcomic guys always demand ridiculous shit like credit and web traffic?
Edit: I like those comic, they're pretty funny (especially the batman one). If you don't mind me saying, almost every webcomic I've seen has their navigation buttons listed in the opposite order that you do.
[–]rubeninterrupted 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
I know, everyone says that. But more people have said they like it or that it's cool.. so I left it alone. I was sleepy when I coded it.
[–]fireburt 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
Yeah, it's your site and since you have the words there and not just arrows, it isn't really a big deal. Good luck with the comic.
[–]Matriss 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
When you rehost comics or hotlink to the image instead of to the page that the comic is posted on the creator loses money. It should be common internet courtesy to link to the page (not the image) and then have an imgur mirror in case the site goes down. :D
[–]fireburt 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Sorry, I was just joking around. I'm all for linking to the actual site.
[–]Matriss 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
No worries, it's just something that needs to be restated until more people figure it out. "Indie" artists are awesome, support them!
[–]fireburt 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
Very true. People on reddit just have this obsession with imgur (which is a great site) and want to host everything there because they will get more upvotes and it's easier for people with RES to view the comic. What would be really cool is if the admins added something so that when linking to a comic, you could add an imgur link as well so if the site goes down that can be used or if the site is blocked at work it can be used.
[–]Matriss -1 points0 points1 point 10 months ago
Suggest that to the RES devs, it would be easier for them to implement it and tons of people use RES anyway.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
You will vastly increase the number of people who visit your site from this comment if you make that into a link. People are awfully lazy.
[–]rubeninterrupted 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
Good idea. Thanks.
[–]themcp 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
I'm guessing you were inspired by Penn Jillette's new book?
[–]brooooooo 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
it was inspirational, thank you.
[–]hlazlo 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
For what it's worth, the few updates I read were entertaining, including this one. The real test is whether someone liked it enough to type the URL on the bottom of the comic, not whether they clicked a link.
[–]mjpirate 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
I appreciate the comic, Thanks for the logic humor. Often people post images to hosting sites to save your server. The traffic generated from a front paged image often cripples smaller servers, which is why we use imgur, flickr, etc..
[–]rubeninterrupted 4 points5 points6 points 10 months ago
Yeah, I'm not worried about being overwhelmed. That's the kind of problem I want. Besides, number of hits directly enlarges my e-peen.

I guess he forgot to mention the hundreds of other deities that people believe(d) in. Should we believe in those too?
[–]Quazifuji 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
I think the thought process was that you pick one and hope you picked right, since most religions promise something good for following them while atheism typically includes the belief that your piety has no effect on what happens when you die. The flaw was the assumption that, if there were a god, it would be one that would want you to worship it (i.e. ignoring the possibility that there is a god, but atheists get rewarded more than believers).
I like cryogenic freezing as an alternative. If you don't get frozen, you'll definitely stay dead, but if you do get frozen, there's some small chance that in the future, medical technology will advance to the point where they can revive you and cure whatever it was that practically killed you. It's a similar concept, but you think it's more likely that science will one day develop the technology to revive you from freezing (and that they will unfreeze and revive you when that happens) than it is that whatever religion you would pick is correct, then you might have better odds than Pascal's wager.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points15 points 10 months ago
On a purely hypothetical level I think if there were such a place as heaven I don't honestly think one would be excluded simply for being skeptical. I think if there were a higher power and it gave humanity free will and the power of rational thought, he would embrace men who aren't content with simply being told "this is true" without being given evidence to it.
You know...basically what the comic just said. >.>
[–]Doshibu 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
If this were true, then Hell would not exist at all. You simply cannot have Heaven and Hell unless your deity is an asshole.
[–]archivis 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
Hell would be where you'd get your eternally flaming charcoal for your post-life grilling sessions!
Very true.
As far as western religions are concerned I enjoyed learning about Elizabethan religious ideas where a man's soul didn't go straight to hell if they weren't a saint, but existed in a kind of purgatory until their souls were cleansed of their worldly sins.
But honestly stuff like that is why I was never a holder of any western faith, not even as a young child. I just couldn't take any of it seriously on anything but a philosophical level.

"Meh, I'm man enough to admit I was wrong. You're kinda cool, God."
[–][deleted] 19 points20 points21 points 10 months ago
I liked it... until "sluts", because the "sluts" in question are probably supposed to be women. I'll just pretend that the artist intended for both the man and god to be bisexual. Who's up for a big, sweaty, heavenly orgy?
[–]Doshibu 3 points4 points5 points 10 months ago
I think the point of the "sluts" was the God isn't this super-holy, "perfect" being and is instead "just another guy."
Because being another guy means shaming women for expressing their sexuality (a very religious and archaric view) while congratulating a man for his free thinking.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
Yes, god is as much of a dick as anyone else. That's the entire fucking joke.
[–]TheDark1 14 points15 points16 points 10 months ago
Last panel ruined it for me. Why would atheists be "rustling up sluts"? Is that typical atheist behaviour?
[–]aramid 6 points7 points8 points 10 months ago
Is that typical atheist human behaviour?
Umm, yes? Take away all the concern about babies and diseases (this is in heaven, after all), and all the biblically-motivated puritanical customs, and why not?
Larry Niven had an interesting take on it in the later books in the Ringworld series, where for some plot reasons there weren't any diseases, and there were a bunch of anatomically (but not biologically) compatible humanoid species. He treated it as part of normal interactions between tribes. No risk, lots of fun for everyone, why wouldn't you?
[–]TheDark1 8 points9 points10 points 10 months ago
Why is this God depicted as wise and benign at the beginning, and later as misogynistic? It makes no sense. I just feel it was a weak ending. A cheap gag that lowered the value of the first 2 panels, which I though were very strong.
[–]energy_engineer -1 points0 points1 point 10 months ago
and later as misogynistic?
Ever been to a gay bar? The term need not be exclusively applied to women. There's probably some rule 34 comic about a male god and some horse hung gogo stud slut in a gay bar.
[–]TheDark1 -1 points0 points1 point 10 months ago
No.
[–]Blackplatypus -6 points-5 points-4 points 10 months ago
Misogynistic? You're the one who took it that way. Your implied slut-shaming isn't exactly very pro-woman.
[–]antonivs 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
You seem to have misunderstood what "slut-shaming" means (or are just trolling.) It involves "shaming and/or attacking a woman or a girl for being sexual".
The cartoon god's statement "let's rustle up some sluts" is instead treating women as sex objects that exist for male gratification. Objecting to that is not slut-shaming.
[–]Blackplatypus 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
"instead treating women as sex objects that exist for male gratification."
I see him expressing interest in having sex with women... I don't see what part of that is misogynistic. To say that saying "lets go have sex with women" is treating them like they only exist for male gratification sounds absurd to me. I doubt you would object if he said "lets go play video games with girls" (or guys) and I honestly don't see why making it sex instead of video games makes it misogynistic.
Is it because he used the word "sluts?" Not all of us associate the same negative connotations with the word "slut" as you do. Implying that being called promiscuous is an insult is exactly slut-shaming.
[–]antonivs 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
I see him expressing interest in having sex with women...
Sure, by using an adjective that became widespread in connection with cattle (rustling), and by using a noun that at the very least can be derogatory and objectifying based on intent. One of the most basic definitions of slut shaming is calling a woman a slut in order to denigrate her.
To say that saying "lets go have sex with women" is treating them like they only exist for male gratification sounds absurd to me.
That would be absurd, because your translation doesn't suffer from the problems with the original statement.
doubt you would object if he said "lets go play video games with girls" (or guys) and I honestly don't see why making it sex instead of video games makes it misogynistic.
The issue is not that sex is the subject. "Let's go have sex with women" doesn't have the same connotations as (rephrasing slightly to illustrate the point) "herding up some whores".
Not all of us associate the same negative connotations with the word "slut" as you do. Implying that being called promiscuous is an insult is exactly slut-shaming.
The issue here is how the characters in question are using the word. Regardless of the degree to which the word has been rehabilitated, that doesn't make it OK to use it in a demeaning, dehumanizing, derogatory, or objectifying way.
The only defense you can really make here is to claim that this isn't the sense in which it was being used. To know that for sure, you'd have to interrogate the characters on their attitudes, but on the surface, the way it was used seems to indicate a lack of respect for women as full human beings.
The argument you're making actually provides a case against trying to rehabilitate terminology like "slut" - with the case you're making, you could be the worst kind of misogynist who's delighted that their normal objectifying language can now in some sense be argued to be acceptable. That would imply that misogynistic attitudes, behavior, and language wouldn't need to change at all, but instead would gain a veneer of acceptability due to the efforts of people attempting to combat those attitudes and behavior through language.
If you've interpreted all the fuss about slut-shaming as implying that it's fine to go around using the term "slut" to objectify women as sexual objects, you've badly missed the point.
[–]TheDark1 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Yeah certain highly visible protest movements later, I still perceive the word "Slut" as having negative connotations.
[–]ProbablyDiseased 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
At first I was kind of pissed off about it too (just the dismissive tone of the phrase), but then I figured it could be making the point that sluts won't actually go to hell either despite how much the religious establishment likes to demonize sexual freedom.
Nice point.
[–]fiveguy 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
well, it's supposedly not "godly" behavior according to many
[–]akatch 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
You must not have been here for Elevatorgate (I agree with you).
It's a joke. Sometimes jokes sharply contrast with what you expect at the end of the joke. Your mind interprets this incongruity as funny.
My mind doesn't interpret this incongruity as funny in the least. Should have finished with something light, like "Want to play Jenga?"
[–]niyou77 -3 points-2 points-1 points 10 months ago
Since when are atheists puritan?
I didn't say that, I just think that line ruined the tone of the comic.
[–]Eratosthenes 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
The other problem with Pascal's wager is that you'd have to apply it to all religions, not just Christianity: Islam, Judaism, Mormonism, etc, to say nothing of the different sects of each one, plus you'd have to worship all of the pagan gods that no one worships any more, just in case, plus you'd still have to worry about missing old obscure religions that barely even exist on historical record. You'd essentially have to spend your entire life being a fundamentalist of every single religion, which when you think about it is impossible anyway due to the contradictory nature of religions (eg, the monotheistic religions all explicitly ban the worship of pagan gods) and time constraints.
So even if Pascal's wager were possible to carry out, you'd be wagering all of the time you spend alive (and also the only time you will ever be alive - probably) on the shred of a possibility that you don't only get one shot at existence. Pretty high stakes. Fortunately, Pascal's wager isn't possible to carry out anyway, so we can all rest easy.

[–]bugler30 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
at first I thought God was wearing a wife-beater
What if anything? This is an interesting perspective, one derived from an imagination trying to brainstorm different possible justifications for our existence. It's funny to me how at this point in time, with such a sophisticated understanding of our existence, MANY still hold onto such a rigid and simplistic worldview. This comic suggests one of infinite possibilities which can define our existence and thus remains a fleeting idea (one that plays on our comedic sensibilities). This can be a reality like any other. A theist who believes with certainty, something that cannot physically be explained, has no imagination, nor do they have any ability to to experience things objectively. We know and understand a lot, yet have no incentive to stick with one possible reality. The evidence will always be lacking. What theists do not understand is that they are not the righteous ones. They are simplistic and gullible, this leads them to dedicate themselves to a limited worldview. Life is full of wonder, to live in one reality, under fear, is so boring and so stale. I'm drunk. Goodnight
[–]Bugs_Nixon 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago

I've always had this sort of idealism about a God. If such a person was to exist, it'd make much more sense for them to perpetually reward atheists.
Anyway, I still wouldn't worship God/Yahweh/Allah/whoever if they actually proved their existence, so I suppose I'll be fine.

[–]SeriousMoad -1 points0 points1 point 10 months ago
Because I obviously expected to get upvoted, smartass.
[–]Cocoasmokes 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
I agree with you. There's a hidden element to this sort of joke that makes me nervous: that it sounds a lot like something a fundamentalist would say. "We are models of what God wants from the world, and we are superior to those who are not." All very smug and all-knowing on a subject we can know nothing about until we die.
Of course, you could take this another way...If we are atheists, not believing in God, we can suppose that there will be no hip-to-hookers-and-booze father figure in the sky, that religion seems like (from the outside) lost people desperately seeking approval from a distant father figure that isn't there. But that would make this comic depressing rather than comedic.
Now that I've over-analyzed this to death, I'm off to liquor store! /hopsonsegway
[–]miborovsky 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Exactly, this comic is just ammunition for the "oh, atheists are just angry at God" assertion. The god portrayed in this comic is just another prick who toys with people's lives. I don't know why any atheist will want to chum up with such a being.
[–]Sykotik 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
I'm an atheist and while I do not believe in heaven I don't rule out the possibility of some sort of post-death existence or "afterlife" if you like.
[–]SeriousMoad 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
Irrelevant. Not ruling out the possibility doesn't mean we should be putting shit like this out, entertaining their beliefs and stating that we might be the ones going to their paradise. The only case it's acceptable would be to counter Pascal's Wager, in an effort to show how ridiculous his argument was.
[–]jeepbraah 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago

Any good study of the human brain will show that any human ability to reason is second to illogical reactions and emotions. There is no getting past the fact that evolution of the brain has resulted in a structure that deals in heuristics that often fail.
Just consider implicit racism. Even the most equality minded person still shows racism when tested at the implicit level, as this is testing on a deeper level of the brain than the cortex and conscious thought. At this deeper reaction level, we have no control over the fact that for most of us, even the logical among us, even the racial minorities among us, fear and heightened senses are the result of exposure certain characteristics that are strongly associated with race (even though this association is itself a fallacy, as the real association is with populations, not races).
Also, remember that an Atheist only doens't believe in gods, they can still believe in other supernatural or weird things and still be an atheist.
