While that was great, it should be noted that Russia entered the war due to worrying over the German entrance into the Balkans. It was a political necessity that had far more to do with oil fields than anything going on with France.

[–]NWTboy 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, it was more between Germany, AH, Serbia and Russia, but Germany's only ear plan to do with Russia involved attacking France first.

[–]longshot2025 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yep, just finished covering this in an International Relations class and it bugged me. Basically Russia was helping Serbia, France was allied with Russia, and then the German's only war plan was to attack both. Rest of this seemed spot on to me.

[–]DoctorNose 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Russia wasn't helping Serbia per se.

The Ottoman Empire was dissolving in the Balkans/Yugoslavia, and it was leaving behind confusing nationalist areas (creating groups like the Black Hand) who were the focus of the remaining major powers in the area. While both AH and Russia exerted major control over much of the area, they couldn't exert de facto control without worrying the national interests of the other party. Hence, it wasn't that Russia was on Serbia's side. It was that Russia was worried if AH took Serbia as part of the empire, they would be threatening the Balkan oil fields that Russia needed to keep their economy afloat.

[–]longshot2025 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We glossed over Russian interests unfortunately. My only point was that France wasn't involved until after Russia for the most part.

[–]syphilis_smile 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The original Russian intention was to mobilize half of their armed forces as a show of force against Austria. They determined that such a move might trigger Germany's response, so they decided to go for a full mobilization just in case. This full mobilization convinced Germany that a war between Germany/Austria and Russia/France was imminent, so they went to war.

Their choice in target was really just due to the timing of the different nations' mobilization plans. The Germans had the quickest organization, followed by France and then Russia, so they would deal with each of their enemies as their enemies entered the field.

[–]longshot2025 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most countries were also operating under the false assumption that the attacking side had a massive advantage over the defender, which turned out to be completely backwards. The comic hits that right on, which is why I like it.

[–]syphilis_smile 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, the Germans were afraid of the French fortifications along the frontier, which is why they decided to go quickly through Belgium to encircle the main French armies. They did at least learn the lesson from the American Civil War about attacking prepared defenses. I've just never read that they felt the attackers have a massive advantage over defenders, though it would make sense given Germany's conviction that she had to attack as quickly as she could, even if it meant that England would enter the war against her (instead of on her side as England was proposing in the decade preceding the war).

[–]longshot2025 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It made for quite an interesting read. All of the major powers, but Germany especially, believed that the side that struck first would win a decisive blow and decide the war in a day. The German mobilization plan was actually the equivalent of declaring war, because it called for the immediate seizing of an important railroad junction inside Belgium. They figured if they could take out France immediately, the British wouldn't want to invade France on their own.

[–]KaiserFoch -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In a way. They were more involved in the fighting, but American entry had a big effect. Not really on the battlefield but the fact of American involvement mean the western allies basically couldn't lose (no way we'd run out of men before Germany), peace follows.

The only thing I would have changed is having germany throw a rock at england, having it bounce off and hit the us, and using that to explain why the US joined (the Lusitania)

Vimy ridge, Amiens and Canada's 100 days muthafucka.

America didn't have nearly as big a part as was portrayed here. At least that's not how we learned it.

[–]KaiserFoch 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

American troops didnt carry too much of the burden. "Only" 100,000 deaths, which is nothing comparitively. The idea of millions of reinforcements in the future was definitely decisive though.

Edit: My bad, wrong war. I was shit talking for no good reason...

[–]Korkymann 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Canada, with roughly one-tenth the population of the US, fought in both theaters of war alongside the Americans. The biggest difference is Canada joined the wars much earlier (not having a choice in WWI) than the States.

[–]shrlock 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

we learned in history class that we had a huge part in ending fighting too, and the last 100 days are known as canada's hundred days.

not sure if we played as big a part as we were told or if this is the education and military systems having a circlejerk.

A book that would be 1000x better without the sweaty sex scenes every eight pages.

It was like he decided that history was boring around 200 pages in, and decided to turn it into a Danielle Steele novel.

As a Newfoundlander, I kind of resent how they portray us as ignorant to mustard gas (at least I think that's what's being depicted). What really happened to us there was a fucktarded British commander forced us over the ridge at Beaumont-Hamel and straight into German machine-gun fire, which he was told would happen but ignored the advice. ~670 casualties out of ~780 soldiers. Just thought that was worthy of mention.

I don't think "rainbow brigade" means what you think it means.

But I understand your point. In 1941, Germany and Japan were clearly at the brink when America entered the war. A year of England sitting on its thumbs and then getting driven out of France shattered the Germans' morale, and the Russians had long since stopped accepting American loans and equipment.

[–]latticusnon -1 points0 points ago

As much as America's involvement is overplayed, they also had no reason to enter the war.
