Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  6. No animated images. Please submit them to /r/gif, /r/gifs, or /r/reactiongifs instead.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

A monument can't be abandoned. It's a monument. It's just supposed to be there.

[–]hilo 304 points305 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Whoever took this picture was accomplishing the monuments purpose at that moment.

[–]I_saw_this_on_4chan 163 points164 points ago

You build something, so even when you forget, it will be there to remind you... That is the purpose, to survive abandonment.

[–]OtisDElevator 35 points36 points ago

I still think that a zombie fortress in the background would complete the feeling of abandonment.

I don't know. If you stop cleaning, maintaining, and restoring a monument, I suppose you could call it abandonned.

I suppose this is what this is about here, but I don't really know anythign about Yugoslavia.

EDIT: please stop telling me Yugoslavia doesn't exit anymore ffs. I know that, but its the word in the OP and I'm not gonna guess which country it's in right now.

[–]flaarg 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wouldn't that in a sense give more meaning to the monument?

I used to live by a Civil War battlefield and the most thought provoking monuments were not those that are still cleaned and maintained, but the ones covered in plants and hidden. We made a monument to honor those who died. What does it mean to those we honored that we forgot about their monument?

[–]Grozni 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

After the fall of the Yugoslavian socialist regime in early 90's people were destroying every simbol of past times. Many monuments were destroyed during that time, so you could consider an "abandoned" one lucky. I remember a satyrical coment in some daily newspapers from that time: "Being a fallen hero is the worst thing possible. First, you're dead. Then they build an ugly monument to honor you... and then they blow it up."

[–]peegee42 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

people were destroying every symbol of past times

This is a pretty strong statement. I don't know where you live, but in Serbia that wasn't the case.. I remember one Tito monument being tucked away, and some, mostly mad people did advocate 'cleaning the slate', but it never became practice. Destroying part of the history would be barbaric.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

1983 Yugoslavia, Croatia.

Last generation of pioneers

[–]antena 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

1983 here too. They cancelled the pioneer program 2 months before I was to become one. I cried. Sister gave me her hat and scarf, and I pledged in front of my whole family that I shall study and work hard, respect my parents and elders, that I shall be a faithful and honest friend... I uphold these words to this day and feel very strongly about it. Kids today just don't do anything so meaningful at that age, if ever.

[–]Amadan 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am old enough to have been a pioneer. Oath and all. No-one in my class thought it was meaningful, we all thought it was a boatload of crap and a waste of time.

I incidentally do uphold the tenets of the oath; always have. Incidentally. Not because of the stupid oath, but because I want to be a good person. Jerks will be jerks, whatever oath you make them repeat. Education should be more than an evening's worth of ceremony.

I will bet that you too "uphold these words" because your parents taught you right, not because someone stuck a blue cap on your head and made you recite an incantation.

[–]antena 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I do agree with you on the parents thing. But because the way I am, and the way I was raised, I hold the memory of it very dear, maybe because it was recited in a close circuit of family members looking at me with great pride and joy, maybe not. I know the oath by heart, I never forgot the words. I like to think that most of people who became pioneers and didn't appreciate the oath at the time, got to the point in their life where they started to appreciate it because of it's simple and well being nature. And if they never appreciated it, I'll still think and believe the same way, just because the pioneer oath was one of many, many things telling me that being nice, trustful and loyal is the way to go. It just so happens that it was one of the earliest and most memorable of those things.

Before the break up I honestly thought the majority referred to itself as Yugoslavian, not only 20% :/ I was born in France so I'm "French" but I still often say "yugoslavian" instead of croat/serb/bosanac... And French people tell me "why do you say yugoslavian? it doesn't exist anymore!". What do they care?... so I'm forced to correct myself...I think I won't anymore :) so I agree 100% with you. upvote

Currently Croatian. Was Yugoslav 20 years ago.

The monument was built in Yugoslavia, to memorialise the anti-fascist battle of the WW2 and celebrate the Yugoslav values, paid by Yugoslavia, so saying it's a Yugoslav monument is quite correct.

I'd just like to point out that at least one of the monuments is not abandoned. The one at Kruševo is still operational and I visited it in 2006. From the way it was cared for back then, I don't think it was closed down in the meantime (I could be wrong).

And while we're at it, the Kruševo monument is actually pretty cool in real life. You can enter it and there are some pretty nice stained glass windows inside. A couple of pics I took:

Abandoned, in the sense that it appears run down and not well maintained.

I think one of the main reasons I'd love to be obscenely rich and powerful is that my wealth would allow me to secretly build shit like this all over the place and confuse the hell out of future generations.

I personally think this is the most effective of them all, but what really gets me is that every time a country becomes the villain on an international stage, we lose the expectation that anything of beauty could come from that place.

country becomes the villain on an international stage

Yugoslavia didnt actually attack somebody else in order to be promoted to a villain. It was a federation of states, similar to the US, and broke up violently into dozens of economically non-viable but ethnically clean microstates, aka Balkanization. Yugoslavia didnt go down into history as a villain, but as a crazy case of sudden outbreak of mental illness, violence and self-mutilation, after half a century of relative prosperity in the middle of the EU. It was more a zombie movie (like "28 days later") than a villain movie.

That monument's actually a couple miles away from the OP one. When they fired up the hidden lazer the first time, it blasted a hole into a mountain and they carved away the rest of it into this monument.

Visited it last Saturday. It's nice and clean. Image 1 - Image 2

I agree, that is the most beautiful monument I have ever seen. I think it means more when it isn't surrounded by a well maintained park and doesn't have hundreds of tourists around it.

Some civilization a couple thousand years in the future is going to run across some of these and scratch their heads trying to figure out what the hell these things are for. I bet they'll make the assumption that they were some kind of alter to their gods or some hair-brain idea like that.

I really can't see this happening anymore, considering the detail of information humans now keep and store. There is probably some underground vault that wikipedia backs up to every year, at least that's how i like to think of it ;)

most of it is futurism from after ww2, some artist like dusan dzamonja built this stuff. i find myself often apriciating what he does but , different people different tastes.

This was done by a famous sculptor, Dušan Džamonja. It was built to commemorate WWII battles. Here are some more. If you want to know more, search Wikipedia for mentioned sculptor.

I'm there now (Brit), people don't have much money but they seem to be out regularly with family, friends at parties and bbq's and what-not - seems like they're doing better off than my friends back in Europe.

Ignore that guy, hardly anyone will have seen it because most people don't sit on Reddit 24/7 waiting for a re-post just so they can shout "re-post".

[–]jamessays 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, maybe "abandoned" is too harsh of a word. But certainly, it can be said that no one bothers to send it letters on its birthday or call it up every now and then to see how it is doing.
