Beware of trading scammers!

A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports). "Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

"Generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission.

A good friend of mine really wants a Super Smash Bros. clone to be made starring breakfast cereal characters.

I would pay money to see Cap'n Crunch slap Crackle and Pop like they were the Ice Climbers.

Totally. Everyone would hate the honey nut cheerio bee because his aerial control would be even better than metaknight.

Jump Ultimate Stars is insane. If you like anime or manga and Smash Bros. This game is like a gift from god.

Yeah I had to use a translation guide to play the game, but after awhile you don't really need it. I memorized the game menus in about a week. I can honestly say even though its for a hand held game system. It's one of the best fighting games I've ever played. Not the deepest fighting system and people online can be cheap but the fun can't be beat.

Because everyone thinks that this game is good solely becasue of the Nintendo mascots. Don't get me wrong, it's a lot of fun to play as Nintendo favorites, but the fighting mechanics are the real reason why the game is so popular.

I'd love a game company that cares about competitiveness and game balance to take a stab at the smash formula; with their own characters designed from the ground up to fit a playstyle; not fitting a playstyle onto an existing character.

100% agree and this is what I meant by starting this, don't understand the downvotes.

I guess people are serious that the Nintendo mascots are the best part...

The game is great and fun to play because of the mechanics. But it's popular because of the mascots.

Unfortunate, but true. Though, I'm sure that there's enough of a niche market of fighting game fans for a developer with enough drive to playtest their game extensively and put out a balanced product. A game that capitalized on the wavedashing mechanics rather than ignoring them would probably be welcomed with open arms by the competitive fighting game community; and that leads to long-term sales. (L-Canceling should be redundant to proper character balance though)

Post-launch balance patching is a must as well.

Maybe DreamMix TV World Fighters for Gamecube and PS2? It even features Optimus Prime.

"No one else", ie, not Nintendo.

[–]Acrostis 3 points4 points ago

Probably because no other game company has as many franchise game characters as Nintendo.

Closest I can think of would be Jump Super/Ultimate Stars, and that will never come out of Japan due to problems licensing the characters.

What? Nintendo has like 6 exclusive games! Playstation has 12 that I can name off the top of my head. I'm pretty sure with those 12 exclusives they can get enough characters to match how many there are in Smash Bros. or have even more characters than it.

No, you are thinking characters on a console vs a game company's, Sony do not own the right to all everything released on Playstation.

It would require a large amount of cooperation between the developing companies, too much to be worth it.

I never said that Sony owned the rights to every game that was ever released on PlayStation. They do own quite a few companies. Media Molecule(Little Big Planet), Insomniac(Ratchet and Clank, Resistance), and I'm pretty sure they also own Naughty Dog(Uncharted, Jak and Daxter), and Santa Monica Studios(God of War, Twisted Metal). None of the companies I listed have worked for any one besides Sony. And I remember reading that they bought Insomniac and Media Molecule, so I know for sure they own those.

look, here is the most famous ripoff in Japan. It's actually pretty fun if you are a fan. Many items are found in their exact same iteration in this game:

BATTLE STADIUM D.O.N.

There was this game called Small Arms that sort of tried to modify the basic idea to make it about gunplay rather than close quarters fighting. It's a stretch, but I definitely saw the resemblance when I played it. It's pretty good, but pretty unbalanced and has limited content, as it was an XBLA game.

I think Sony could if they wanted too. There are plenty of characters to choose from with all of their exclusive games.

[–]Ellimis 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sony doesn't own any of the characters that are exclusive to their consoles. Nintendo has created each of these characters (with few exceptions) from the ground up, and in each of their games, Nintendo was the publisher. Sony isn't a game publisher OR a developer

[–]LordOfAwesomeTown 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How do you know that Nintendo created all of the characters? For all you know they are all stolen from little orphans.

[–]Frix 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They did, several times actually. but in the end if the game simply isn't good then pasting popular characters on it won't fix anything.

This game type has been around LONG before Smash Bros. I can't remember the name of the game at the moment but there was a 2D arcade game that had the exact formula but instead there was more blood and gore and actually more interesting overall.

Also this game has been made of entirely mascot characters. Not every company has 20 characters that they can throw out that are recognizeable.

Capcom, yeah. Konami, not so much, but they did make their own games that have a few mascots back on the NES.

Squaresoft(enix) Did a few games but they sell about as well as they could.

Now you have to think of the other dozen developers if you made a game.

Ubisoft - What is their most well known titles? Assassins creed, Splinter Cell, Beyond Good and Evil, and a dozen tom clancy titles with different characters. Not exactly viable material for a smash bros game.

Atlus - This would be a massive mistake. It wouldn't make any sense. They actually have a lot of Japan only games and if they released a game like this it would be just a mess.

The only games that I can think of lately that were even semi-decent that used characters of something was Jump Superstars 1 and 2. But 2 cut out DBZ or something like that if I remember right.

Point is it just isn't a practical game format.

[–]HopeRidesAlone 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They should make a game with the latest Smash Bros Engine based around Arrested Development. Koo-koo-ka-cha!

[–]Ellimis 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because the initial appeal that actually originally drew an audience to the game was the mashup of characters. No other company has licenses to that many popular characters.

Obviously the game has evolved since then, but you have to have an interesting character base in the first place to attract users.

Soul Calibur is probably the closest to a non-Nintendo game on this genre.

[–]Sharrakor 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wha? How is Soul Calibur different from your average fighting game? It doesn't feature crossover characters (well, outside of the one or two guest characters per game), and it has the complicated button inputs that drive away many non-hardcore gamers (as opposed to the "universal" button inputs for Smash Bros.).

No, Power Stone is definitely closer.
