I think it just further proves the point of his quote.

Yep, they're actually proud of their ignorance.

This is a House of God.

I see what you did there.

I don't see what he did there, but I'll believe it's something humorous. You see, I suffer from a religious condition called Blindness. I can't see it, but I'll just take someone's word.

Wait, how is this in any way supportive of church?

[–]AlterdCarbon 68 points69 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This supports the church because, in their eyes and in their church's eyes, anything other than absolute blind unwavering faith is sin. They take it as a good thing that they cannot be swayed by reason.

Remember, to devout Christians such as these everything in this world and all experiences in life are merely a test for their "true life" after death. They take nothing at face value, every single experience in their lives is viewed through the lens of their religion. If something does not support their beliefs it is considered a test by their god or an effort by their devil to sway them to sin.

There is a very very very skewed line between reality and fantasy for these people. They decide what is real and what is illusion, or what is true and what is untrue based not on sight, touch, smell, sound, or reason, but based on the rote dictation of their religious leaders.

In my opinion this is the true evil of religion. It detests independent thinking, espouses "choosing to believe" things (as opposed to being compelled to believe things based on sufficient evidence), and is diametrically opposed to the idea of rational inquiry integral to the scientific method.

This this this, fucking THIS.

People here with rational minds look at this sign with slack-jawed wonder at how the church could possibly take the quote and put it in favor of religion.

What you all have to understand is just what AlteredCarbon said. They not only don't think, they see rationality as a direct attack on their beliefs.

This is what's truly scary.

Hey, the original sin was eating fruit from the tree of knowledge...

[–]LiveOnSteak 8 points9 points ago

I cannot comprehend how I ever thought fruit from the tree of KNOWLEDGE would be bad.

If ignorance is bliss, I'd rather be miserable.

My cousin's job search was a test from God, and her finding a job was God's reward. Ugh.

[–]canyouhearme 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

While you might be right, there is an alternative explanation.

If you are trying to 'convert the sinner' you first have to entice the sinner in. The usual poster saying how wonderful god is, with a carefully selected bible quote, isn't going to attract many atheists.

So if they use what is an atheist meme, they will get at least some atheists turning up to say "you do realise that doesn't mean what you think it means" - and then they can go to work on them.

Bonus points if they have good looking hotties in their group to snare the nerdish atheist into listening to their prosthelytizing.

Reminds me of a cop who spoke on my college campus in 1967. Talking about pot busts, he said, "Pot is against the law, and my job is to enforce the law. My mind is not confused by facts."

I couldn't believe anyone would be proud to make such a statement...

[–]WarriorMuse 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am really hoping he is just unable to articulate his position. The first two elements are correct. Pot is against the law (the law may need changing, but in this instant it is still illegal), and his job is to enforce the law.

Now, what I hope he meant at the end is "it is beyond my authority to make value judgments on the merit of the law" because that is correct for his job. Saying "my mind is not confused by facts" sounds like a frightening automaton.

I came to the comments hoping that someone would have pointed this out. So far, nothing. What is in this message, that the church is misunderstanding in order for it to support religion? I can't figure it out.

[–]dropcode 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The only thing I can think of is that they may not have a solid understanding of the word "rational". I've heard religious people say things like "I don't have to believe science because I have faith in god." so maybe they read it "science doesn't usually work on religious people" or similar.

[–]Kogledk 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't get it either. I'm really trying hard to figure out how it could mean anything else than what it was originally intended to mean.

Read the story of Doubting Thomas, when Jesus was resurrected he did not initially accept his word that is what happened, so Jesus showed him the scars and said something like hallowed are they that believe without the need to be shown. Essentially reprimanding Thomas requiring proof.

Now if believing without evidence makes you holy, imagine what believing in the face of evidence. Therefore they see a lack of rational thought not only as a way to keep believing but that it actually makes them better in the eyes of the lord. It is why it is so easy for them to attribute all positive things to god and all negative things to a test of faith (that is, god is giving you a reason not to believe in him so that you can become a better believer, see dino bones, evolution, germ theory).

[–]Nagashizuri 0 points1 point ago

I was doubting Thomas in a church play one time and pretty much frisked Jesus on stage. Did it help that Jesus was being played by a hot chick? Admittedly yes.

I think egocentric people lack the ability to imagine how other people will likely interpret their message. They expect that people will automatically interpret their message in the way that is favorable to their religion. Shocking.

I put that quote as my FB status awhile back. Almost every christian on my friends list 'liked' it. I think they are proud to be irrational and illogical.

I saw this very sign from the bus the other day on my way to college. The name of the church amuses me. The rest of the sign, not so much.

[–]whichgodisshittier 2 points3 points ago

What they are trying to say, is obviously: Stop being so damn rational, otherwise you can not find God/go to heaven.

For people who believe in heaven and eternal life, giving up reason is really not a bad deal.

That is also why people treat reason like a devil, I guess.

edit: English.

[–]frothyhole 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

First I thought Photoshopped, this is too funny to be real. Then I remembered the sermons and teachings when I was a theist. Rational thought and logic don't mean much to christians because "it comes from man not God". So the sign to these people reads Weak unconvincing arguments that leans on man's understanding does not work on us because we have the real truth from the ultimate authority no matter what you say or evidence you present. Also could be implying that if they aren't right why are there so many religious people then?

[–]Comradelolkiy 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's religion. Taking what dismisses their beliefs and twisting it for themselves

[–]something_not_taken 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, I'm stumped.

The point of the quote seems so obvious. Maybe it's cause they are "refuge of sinners" and are implying that House is a welcomed sinner or smthn. No, that's just stupid.

Can someone explain this?

[–]Timmmmbob 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think they're saying "Our faith is so strong that it holds against any argument. And we know the faith of others is equally strong, or they would not still be Christians."

[–]stirfrizzle 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's a misquote, while we're at it.

[–]bracketdash 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When trying to come up with a caption for this to put on my facebook wall, I was going back and forth between "And the winner for most ironic use of a quote goes to..." and "I admire their ability to twist words" but then I realized this is what they're actually trying to encourage: immunity to rational arguments.

I can only imagine the people that put this together were thinking "Ha, there ARE religious people, so logic and reason must be wrong!"

[–]badcatdog 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Explanation: First it acknowledges a public criticism, then states two fundamental reasons people attend church.

  • A lot of people want to belong to a social group, with low requirements.

  • A lot of people want to believe in wondrous things, like the X-files, ghosts etc.

While the first part sounds damning, it's not what a lot of people want.

You can read this sign as: "Here is our opposition, but this is what you want"

Religious people believe for emotional reasons.

You don't reason in God. You have faith in God. You can take it like Soren Kierkegaard understood it, "Without risk there is no faith."

[–]Aavagadrro 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They simply dont think any farther than what they want to hear. They apparently dont watch the show, they saw it online somewhere and thought, "Hey, that fits because we are rational people and we are religious.." Same shit my old church used to do.

Its like people playing that song "Lips of an Angel" at their wedding not realizing its about a dude talking to his ex in secret while his SO is in the other room.

[–]dostiers 0 points1 point ago

I'm sure the person/s responsible do know what the House quote means. But it doesn't matter. They pretend it is a positive and no doubt most of the target audience will actually see it that way. Get a trusted person to proclaim that black is white and you'd be surprised at how many will unthinkingly accept it. That goes double if the proclaimer has a dog collar.

This seems like a really funny and utterly frivolous thing, that a religious person would be so completely lost up his own theological anus that he can't even tell the difference between a pro- and an anti-religious statement. But it isn't. It's awful.

Dr. House is essentially saying "One plus one equals two," while the nuts are saying "Yes, exactly, God the Lord our master agrees that one plus one equals potato, isn't our God wonderful?"
