I'll always associate the two statements with this exchange from Boy Meets World: (for some reason it stuck with me)

George Feeny: ...Believe in yourselves. Dream. Try. Do good.

Topanga Lawrence-Matthews: Don't you mean do well?

George Feeny: No I mean do good.

From her iMDB page: "She used to date Lance Bass from *NSYNC, but the constant time apart led to their break up. They are reportedly still friends." made me smile... "Constant time apart," eh? is that what they're calling it these days?

I don't think Lance was the only gay in that group.

I stayed at the same resort as Joey Fatone in Mexico about 4 years ago, and I swear to you, he was hanging with a bunch of gay guys for his entourage.

Take this for what you will. Pretty funny that he would just sit under the umbrella by the pool and his entourage would bitch out anyone who came up and asked for an autograph or picture.

This reminds me of something that I've been wondering about for awhile. Boy Meets World was in full swing when they made the movie American History X, so the show was popular and ongoing as the movie was filmed. The dad from American History X was William Russ who was the dad from Boy Meets World and Seth was played by Ethan Suplee who was a pretty prominent supporting role from the series.

The teacher's name was Mr. Sweeny, and he was the overbearing but well meaning teacher that everyone begrudgingly accepted guiding their personal life as well as their school life.

Coincidence? Or a tip of the hat to Boy Meets World?

Not always true. Formal registers are usually quite prescriptive, even though those prescriptions are often nothing more than "speak the way your great-grandfather spoke."

In some social settings, if you write "I could of gone, but I didn't," you are correct. In others, you are dead wrong and will likely suffer social consequences. If you're in a checkout line and tell the cashier, "I'm doing pretty good today, thanks for asking, and you," you're using English correctly. If you're writing a quarterly report and write, "Our company's Brazilian division did pretty good this quarter," you're using English incorrectly.

I teach English to Chinese kids. With the older ones, some students like to repeat the informal speech they hear in movies/TV, and I can't very well say "no, that's wrong," because clearly it is acceptable English if it's in a movie. What I can say, though, is that kind of language is not acceptable in formal, governmental, academic, or business settings (you know, the reasons you're learning English in the first place) and that kind of language will make you look uneducated if you speak like that in those contexts. Because my goal isn't to train them to speak naturally with friends; they'll soon learn that if they move to America anyway. My goal is to train them to hold jobs or engage in studies that require English skills, which are a bit less forgiving.

[–]vnkid 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can understand saying "I could of gone" but writing it seems ludicrous. "Could of gone" makes no sense to me.

Present: I could go. Past: I could have gone. Possessive o.O? : I could of gone.

Then again I'm bad at English.

[–]emkajii 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is ludicrous, since "have" is an auxiliary and "of" is not, but many of the things we say and write are what seemed ludicrous generations ago. There's no reason why "of" couldn't be the auxiliary.

I mean, we now say things like "I am going to sit here and not move." That is bizarre. You aren't going anywhere. You're making a point of not going anywhere. And indeed, at one point in the history of the language you couldn't say that. But because people were saying things like "I am going to hunt" or "I am going to buy apples" (literally meaning "I am going somewhere now, and the reason I am going is to hunt/buy apples"), eventually "going to" was reinterpreted to mean "will," even though that was kind of ludicrous.

[–]RainbowUnicorns 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When people say "could of gone," they are actually saying "could've gone" instead. They only don't know that's what they're saying as you can tell by so many people typing or writing "could of."

Just a big english misunderstanding.

[–]emkajii 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not really. They're saying "could of gone." We know that's what they're saying because that's what they write. "Could of" is what's in their head.

There is a misunderstanding, though. They think other people are saying "could of gone" when they are actually saying "could've gone." The problem is that they have misanalyzed the input, not that they are mis-writing the output. I mean, it's true that in either case they're hearing [əv] and producing [əv], and it's true that it's just a misunderstanding. But it's not true that they're saying "could've," because "could've" is not in their mental lexicon at all.

[–]cryopyre 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But... once enough people start making those mistakes, it becomes the normal part of the language.

Like the mistakes that led to apron, adder, and umpire being words. They all came from faulty separations where a nadder, a napron, and a numpire were mistook for an adder, an apron, and an umpire. (This isn't quite correct, as the words were a bit different when the separation occurred, but you get the idea).

Point is, it's eventually going to be alot and could/would/should of.

[–]emkajii 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe. Or maybe not. There have been many misinterpretations in history that didn't survive to the present day. If you ever read something from the 1700s, say, you'll see a shit-ton of similar mistakes that people are making left and right, and most of them didn't make it to the present day.

Reinterpetation is a powerful creative force, but there are many conservative forces in language as well. Not all common mistakes become canonized.

[–]schauerlich 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The problem is vowel reduction. When the 'a' in have is not stressed, it is reduced to schwa. This makes it a homophone of of. The writer is simply substituting homophones, much like their vs there. It doesn't matter in speech, but it affects comprehension in writing.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A lot of people miss the fact that written language =|= spoken language.

Arabic is my favorite example. In Arabic, most written forms are "Modern Standard Arabic." It's the written form used in newspapers, books, etc. But because Arabic is so widely spoken, different dialects and colloquialisms form. Someone in Morocco may have trouble understanding the dialect of someone in Iraq, and vice versa.

Then there's the fact that languages are so similar. Urdu and Hindi are so similar, one speaker can pretty much understand the other. Then comes Chinese. If I remember correctly, some dialects of Chinese cannot be understood by other speakers.

[–]emkajii 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Very true. "English" is not one thing. There's quite a bit of overlap between written formal English and spoken formal English, but they're not quite the same thing. If when speaking you speak exactly as you write, you'll usually just confuse your listener. It's fairly easy to read, "The American and Chinese departments, headed by Johnson and Roberts respectively, were allocated $20,000 each with which the latter's team of East Asian language experts were to train the former's Japanese translation department." It's damn near impossible to listen to it, especially if you're non-native.

As for the Chinese dialects, well, they're scarcely "dialects" in the sense we understand the term. "African-American Vernacular English" and "British Standard English" are dialects of English, sure, no problem. No worries there. Things are a bit harder with Chinese. When spoken, Cantonese, Fujianese, and Mandarin are "dialects of Chinese," but only in the same way English, Swedish, and German might be called "dialects of Germanic". They're completely unintelligible to each other, even though there are regular patterns of correspondence if you look at the way the words are structured. But they generally share a written language, thanks to the fact that characters do not encode pronunciation in the same way alphabets do, and for political reasons the Chinese prefer to think of them as one language.

Actually, that's exactly what it means. If everyone says something a certain way, then that's the way it's said. That's how language works. We wouldn't have English if that weren't the case.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hm. I don't feel these are comparable. "I did good" and "I am good" are different. Starting point: "Good" is generally an adjective, used to describe nouns, and "well" is an adverb, describing action verbs. "To be" is a linking verb, and thus an adjective describing the subject is perfectly appropriate, and "I am good" is a correctly-constructed sentence. Just as "The bird is fast" would work, and "the bird is quickly" would not. "To do," alternatively, is an action verb, so the word following it should describe the action of doing, not the subject. Therefore it should be an adverb, such as "well," and not an adjective like "good." The "good" that makes "I did good" mean "I did a good deed" is actually a noun, functioning as a direct object and not a descriptor at all.

For this reason, "I am good" doesn't bother me one bit, and "I did good" annoys the shit out of me.

Edit: typo

I agree that they're wrong to correct you, since nothing's wrong with saying, "I feel good."

But it's not always wrong to say, "I feel well."

When they say that, they're using "well" as an adjective describing the state of health (as opposed to good, describing a general sense of well-being).

A. Do you feel sick?

Scumbag grammar nazi: comments on usage of 'good/well', proceeds to say "You doin'"

[–]mearvk 3 points4 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well is meant to modify a verb, good is meant to modify nouns.

1\ That is a good toy. I went for a good jog. Toy, jog.

2\ That car was painted well. My cat tolerated the ride well. To paint, tolerate.

So if you mean to say whatever you're doing you're doing it in a way you think is good then say "I'm doing well". E.g. How are you doing with the pottery class? I'm doing well.

If you mean to say that your state of being is good then say "I'm doing good". E.g. How are you feeling after taking that aspirin? I'm doing good.

But you can make the case that your implied verb is "to be" and therfore even when asked about your state of being you could respond with "I'm well" or "I'm doing well" since that's basically an idiom for speaking about one's state of being.

TLDR: don't sweat it; people who point this out are probably being pedantic.

[–]CollegeRuled 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well is usually used with specific reference to one's health. Good is usually used as a substitute for happy. There is nothing to worry about here.

[–]admbmb 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This was a very well post.

[–]CollegeRuled 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This isn't true. It is perfectly acceptable to refer to your state of being as 'good', particularly when you want to convey the fact that you are 'happy'. When saying 'I'm doing well', this is a more inclusive response that usually conveys the sense of 'healthy' and is not always appropriate as a response to the question "How are you?". Asking this question is most often done to elicit some kind of response that conveys the emotional state of the responder.

Upvoted for not only 30 Rock's sake, but anti-racism as well. The racists need to see how much love we have for anti-racism in this society. If the racists have a problem, they can start an anti-racism group if they want to. I will volunteer to be the leader and reject any people belonging to my skin color or anti-skin color as I am a anti-racism citizen. If you understand that all as me being a racist, I will resist because I am not an non-racist-citizen and in fact on your side.

Please, if you think I'm making a joke about racism, read my comments again.

Racism should be dead and I have no idea why it already isn't. People are people and there are no exceptions.

I heard the best response to being called out on that on the Keith and The Girl podcast.

Keith: I did good.

Jesse Joyce: You didn't do good; you did well. Doing good would be like saving people from a burning orphanage.

Keith: Well I haven't finished the story yet!

I hate it when people say "well" when they should use "good" because they have been conditioned to say that even when it isn't appropriate.

Same thing for saying "I" instead of "me".
