light pollution makes me sad :(

I grew up living a few miles outside the 'burbs and thought "normal" was being able to see maybe 100 points of light on a clear night. At about 16 I took a cruise with my family and I remember one of the nights that we were between islands the cloud cover cleared. The view was very close to this picture and I was absolutely blown the fuck away. I can't wait to share that with my son some day.

In Canada, we have a number of dark sky preserves where you can go and experience this. Actually, there are a few in the US as well. I'm taking my son to Kejimkujik National Park here in NS camping, just so he can see it. We are lucky where we live - on clear nights, we can see some of the milky way.

I'm mighty jealous now. In the Netherlands there are so many people literally everywhere, there's hardly a place to be found that hasn't got some artificial light. Even if you find such a place, it is likely to be ruined by the lights of greenhouses further away. I should find a dark sky preserve some day :)

Which islands were you in between?

No idea but far enough out that there was no light for easily 100 miles in any direction.

hrmmm is it really possible to take photos like this with a normal camera?

[–]Choicecut 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Absolutely. I took this one in Mexican Hat, Utah with a Nikon D90, 35mm 1.8 lens and a tripod. 20 second exposure and to be honest, it didn't look far from this with the naked eye.

That's a great picture, but I'm really impressed that "Mexican Hat" is a real place.

What's even cooler about the town Mexican Hat, is they have a place known for the Swingin' Steak!

If you are ever there, it is worth checking out! It was one of John Wayne's favorite party stops.

I grew up in a place called Medicine Hat, and some people always called it Mexican Hat to sound "funny". I didn't realize there was actually a place by that name; next time someone calls my hometown by the "wrong" name, I'll have to correct them :)

[–]maninthehighcastle 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is going to sound dumb, but when I was a kid I loved maps. Spent hours reading them, memorizing them, wondering what the places were like. 'Medicine Hat' was one of my favorites. I always figured it was named for Inuits or something.

So, I've never gotten to ask a Medicine Hat resident: What's it like? It looks pretty, and I guess natural gas is big. What did your parents do?

[–]derosecm 28 points29 points ago

Yes. All you'd need is a adjustable shutter speed and a tripod. But the better the sensor is, the nicer your photo will turn out.

...That being said, you can't buy skill.

Sometimes I read comments, laugh, and hide them... then I realize someone just elicited an emotion from me, and that makes you worthy of at least an upvote. This is the first time I've rambled about it though...

[–]o0DrWurm0o 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Typically, it's not something you need to worry about for the exposure lengths you'll be using. Interestingly enough, though, you can see some "smear" in the stars if you zoom in on the image. If you measure this smear and know your exposure time, you can actually calculate the speed that the star was moving across the sky and compare it with theory.

[–]alinot 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exposure for this kind of picture is rarely over a minute, so rotation wouldn't be too big a factor. If you want a picture like this though, you'll need several hours and a location where planes won't fly over you. I've been to star-gazing events and people usually mount the cameras to their telescopes which are designed with either a system of weights or an motorized base to counteract the rotation of the earth.

[–]ktappe 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nice pic. Judging by the arc the stars moved through, that appears to be roughly a 6-hour exposure.

[–]lefthandedsurprise 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I believe most people use a shutter speed of around 30 seconds. At that length you will only notice a very small amount of star trails if you zoom in. I've never gotten a picture of the Milky Way (can't find a dark enough spot and entry level DSLR) but I have done pictures of stars. Also the further zoomed out on the lens, the longer the shutter length you can have without noticeable rotation. At 18mm on the lens, the max you want to go is about 30 seconds.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The rule of thumb for long exposures WITHOUT starttrail is 600 divided by FOCAL LENGTH (ff equivalent).

Hence on a 50mm full frame camera is 30 seconds, but less on most crop sensors.

This will prevent star trails.

[–]lefthandedsurprise 3 points4 points ago

[–]g4me0ver 8 points9 points ago

Everytime I see pictures like this, I ask to myself the same thing... is it real? I really want to be the guy in the picture.

[–]ungoogleable 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's real, but it's not quite what you'd see with your own eyes. The thing is, monitors do not have the dynamic range to show very dim objects. Every picture you see is many times brighter than the real thing. If you get away from light pollution, that just makes the sky darker in contrast; it doesn't make the stars any brighter. Your eyes will adjust some and you'll see many more stars, but it's not at all like looking at a picture where everything is in focus all at once.

The interesting detail, like the clouds of the Milky Way, is mostly at the edge of the eye's ability to detect it. Peripheral night vision is better than direct vision, so you can see vague shapes out of the corner of your eye but if you turn to look straight at it, it just looks like more stars.

[–]InfernoAcid 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wow, thanks for mentioning the peripheral night vision. I've always noticed this effect looking at stars, they seem to hide when i look straight at them. Can be frustrating at times.

[–]Jakitron 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The best method of going about this is to have a really nice telephoto lens and stitch the images together.
You will still need to have an SLR and whatnot, but using a fancy zoomed in lens will definitely help you to produce much more star detail, and much clearer. Example:

[–]InfernoAcid 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As previous posts stated. Get an enviroment with as little light polution as possible, and a camera with an adjustable shutter release, an maybe a time delay option too. Then just open up the aperture as far as you can, set the iso to around 400, and a shutter time of 15 to 30 seconds.

If you managed to keep the camera perfectly still on some stable surface during the exposure then the odds are the result will impress you!

[–]QuantumEnormity 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This type of picture can never be taken in cities... damn the lights..!

[–]Choicecut 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They can, but you have to learn how to process them. I recently got into Astrophotography about a year ago and am still learning the ropes. These pictures here were all taken from a polluted sky near Columbus, Ohio.

Orion Nebula: http://i.imgur.com/tzSiv.jpg M71 with Comet Garrad: http://i.imgur.com/vC6oL.jpg Triangulum Galaxy: http://i.imgur.com/k8iAV.jpg M81 & M82 Galaxies: http://i.imgur.com/lxJl2.jpg

Now you would need a good telescope and tracking mount to get images like these and learn how to process (which I am still learning how to do as you can see in the pics), but you can definitely do it from polluted skies. The milky way shot I posted a few posts above was from a dark sky with no processing on the image.

Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving

And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour,

That's orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it's reckoned,

A sun that is the source of all our power.

The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can see

Are moving at a million miles a day

In an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour,

Of the galaxy we call the 'Milky Way'.

Our galaxy itself contains a hundred billion stars.

It's a hundred thousand light years side to side.

It bulges in the middle, sixteen thousand light years thick,

But out by us, it's just three thousand light years wide.

We're thirty thousand light years from galactic central point.

We go 'round every two hundred million years,

And our galaxy is only one of millions of billions

In this amazing and expanding universe.

The universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding

In all of the directions it can whizz

As fast as it can go, at the speed of light, you know,

Twelve million miles a minute, and that's the fastest speed there is.

So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure,

How amazingly unlikely is your birth,

And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space,

'Cause there's bugger all down here on Earth.

Lets look at the list of things to do in space.

  1. Look at the Earth. "wow!"
  2. Play with no gravity "I can do flips and spin and stuff"

Now, after a while of that, thoughts move to:

  1. I sure could use some Chick-fil-A / ice cream / something else delicious
  2. I wish I could run
  3. I wish I could feel sunshine
  4. I wish I could feel some wind

etc etc. Point being, space is fun as a novelty. After a while it's work.

Does this mean the Earth rotates perpendicular to the plane of the galaxy? How about the rotation of the disk-shaped solar system in relation to the disk-shaped galaxy? I always assumed they were in plane, but I guess there's no real reason for it to be that way.

More information than you require:

There is a North Celestial Pole, a North Ecliptic Pole, and a North Galactic Pole.

  • The North Celestial Pole is above the north pole of the earth. The stars appear to rotate around this. It is currently near Polaris in the constellation Ursa Minor ("the little dipper"). It is inclined at 23.5 degrees to the North Ecliptic Pole.

  • The North Ecliptic Pole is the "north pole of the solar system", or actually perpendicular to the Earth's orbit around the sun (which is not exactly on the equator of the solar system, but is pretty close). It is currently located in the constellation Draco. The NCP wobbles (precession) around the NEP in a circle which takes 25,800 years. I.e., the "North Star" when the Egyptians built the pyramids was Thuban, not Polaris. In a few thousand years, the "North Star" will be Vega.

  • The North Galactic Pole is inclined at about 63 degrees to the North Ecliptic Pole. I.e., the solar system is rotating 63 degrees off the rotation plane of the Milky Way. The North Galactic Pole is located in the constellation Coma Berenices. This is a good area to look at other galaxies because you are looking away from all the clutter of our galaxy and up into a more open area where we can see such things as the Coma Galaxy Cluster.

Why do you think the Greeks thought the stars were gods. Imagine in the ancient world when there was no light pollution, Humans would be looking up at a sky like this all the time. Must have been pretty hard not to believe in god/gods with that incredible view.

Or think of it like we're on the hand, staring back down the arm.

I don't mean to seem like an advertiser or anything, but the Bing homepage today (US version with a browser that supports HTML5 video) is a time lapse of of the milky way as seen from the Canary Islands in spain, and it looks beautiful. maybe it's from the same point/I'm not sure.

One of the best places to see this on the coast in the US is on an island in Maine. The most accessible one is Mount Desert Island, in Acadia National Park. They recently hosted their 3rd annual Acadia Night Sky Festival.

I love night sky pictures. I remember seeing these as a kid, and even within the past 10 years it's really diminished. :( As much as we tease people who live in Iowa or other farmland placed, they have the best views for star-gazing.

Sometimes I wish I lived on a planet in the Large Magellanic Cloud, so that I could see the Milky Way in all its brilliance taking up like half the night-time sky.

[–]godlesspaladin 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Is it really possibly to see the sky like this without a camera? I've never been anywhere on the planet where it was dark enough, though somehow I feel the only way such a picture can be made is because the camera can capture all the light longer than our eyes can. Would it be wrong of me to expect to see something like this with my naked eye if I was in a dark enough region of the planet?

One of the joys when I'm in the village where my mother grew up, and when beeing in the mountains switzerland; I don't see many stars anymore living in Osnabrück and Paderborn (both around 150,000 citizens, Germany).

Natural lights are just so beatiful when beeing used to citylights...
