Engineers make decent money, but not THAT much that you attract women solely based on wealth.

IMO as a whole they are not assertive enough to demand more. Law firms don't do anything that amazing except work crazy hours - bending over backwards for their clients to meet deadlines and win cases. Engineering work is a lot more challenging, but we get paid less.

Law firms are not shy about asking for more and more money, because they know their clients will be well and truly fucked if they don't hire a firm - and they don't often enter into bidding wars with other law firms to get a job. Whereas engineering firms are full of a lot more modest people who want to do things efficiently and are forced to bid low against their competition who is even more modest and works even more efficiently.

You can't generalize all the the engineering fields with your statement. There's structural engineers who can make a lot of money once they get established. Moreover, generally lawyers/doctors starting making good money only after a good 5-10 years of practice.

I hate to break it to you, but engineers generally don't make a lot of money. Some exceptions start their own companies, but mostly they stick with their corporate jobs and their cubicles and are satisfied with their 5 figures and their small home.

[–]CurLyy 15 points16 points ago

The point is your degree is actually worth something. 5 figures and a stable job is better than no figures or flippin burgers.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points ago

Agreed -- you're pretty much guarenteed to go into your field. You don't see anyone working at the local Subway saying "My electrical engineering degree turned out to be pretty worthless."

Where do you live? Every engineer I know earns well over $100k. You usually hit the 6-figure mark about 5 years in. Also, engineering degrees are starting to become quite valuable in non-engineering fields. A lot of management consulting firms, and large corporations are starting to headhunt engineering students rather than taking business school graduates.

[–]geauxtig3rs 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Where I come from, low six figures income is definitely enough money to put you in the top 10% of wage earners.

[–]nationalism2 2 points3 points ago

Engineers have the average starting salary of any four year degree. That's not to say you're instantly rich, but you're doing better than anyone else. If you add 2-3 years and get a PhD or MS, then you'll find the salary is comparable to doctors and lawyers.

[–]HadACigar 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't you mean the highest starting salary of any four year degree? I can't really think of any comparable degrees besides nursing and pharmacy that will make similar amounts. By no means will a bachelor of science or arts be comparable in terms of salary, and there are far more of those than engineering or nursing degrees.

[–]caprandom 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You fail to understand that engineers who start their own business are failures as engineers. Getting a corporate job is the best thing you can do. Especially one from a highly respected company, like Boeing or Northrop Grumman. It's a joke in our department that as your GPA -> 0, your engineering degree -> business. I know an engineer with a corporate cubicle job with a large house, 2 porches, 2 kids and enough spare change to buy his son a 2006 corvette. His son is 16.

TL:DR: If you start a business with an engineering major, you failed. Average CA salary for a Mechanical Engineer straight out of school is over 55K/year.

True story, people stopped treating me like a ticking bomb once I got my jaw cut and replaced. The downside is, I got in quite a few tricky situations because criminals wouldn't recognize me as one of their own anymore.

All that because I was born with a weird face. It's better now.

how ugly were you before ????

[–]PasswordIsntHAMSTER 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly as I am right now, but add a quarter inch to my upper jaw and set my chin back a little. That means my mouth wouldn't close completely, and I'd smile with my gums. I had to go after seriously wrecked ladies, uglies or nutcases in order to get any play.

Then at some point shit went weird and I suddenly had a beautiful, athletic girlfriend with which I had all in common except the things that would have been annoying. Nerdy hobbies, nymphomania and an addiction to physical exhaustion. She was also extremely rational and didn't care for the behaviors most redditors loathe : mind games, dishonesty, cheating, insecurity were inexistent with her.

It was my first girlfriend and the first girl I made love with. It was also the first girl I dumped. She kept telling me how lucky she was to have found me, and in my weird teenage mind this meant that I could do better. On an even more irrational level, I was scared that this was going to be the love of my life and I did NOT want that to happen at 15.

I got pretty depressed when I realized all the missed opportunities, and in retrospect getting that surgery was basically something I'd done out of self-loathing. For some reason though it all worked out for the better, people started respecting me, mothers with children wouldn't cross to the other side of the street anymore when they saw me coming and I started swimming in pussy.

What I still haven't got back however is my flame. The girl I spent long evenings with playing elite level Dance Dance Revolution or listening to the music she produced or simply taking a long hike in the summer sun... All these things are fickle compared to the one thing she had that was different from all other girls.

She never let me down.

On several levels my life got better. Not being picked on and being included in the activities of Beautiful Rich KidsTM brought some stability to my life, and I matured a lot. I also learnt not to act like a total douche with girls.

The weird thing is, when I start acting like a douche I am the center of attraction, but it always end pretty quick in one of three ways :
1. The girl realizes I'm actually putting on a facade and being fake;
2. The girl realizes she shouldn't be dating such a fucking douche;
3. I think I've hit jackpot and stop being a retard, which drives her away.

Conversely, I haven't even tried my luck in the dating game for nearly two years. I just fuck with whoever's down and have a good time with friends. Not being a douche is an alright feeling by itself, and it beats having to keep up a game of lies and arrogance 24/7 and alienating your friends.

I've had worse adventures in love that make me not want to bother anymore, but that's a story for another time.

TL;DR : met a good girl, dumped her and got facial surgery done out of self-loathing.

not being awkward =/= being a liberal arts major

People who spend their day working with language and interacting with people and interpersonal ideas have a social advantage on people who spend all day working with equations. People who have trouble socializing tend to choose a focus that involves math instead of people. Some folks don't fit this mold, but there's a reason for the stereotype.

"Be well-rounded enough to pass as a liberal arts major"

What the hell is with engineers and hyper-consciousness of everyone's major choice? Most people do not care nearly as much about the majors of the people they are talking to as engineers seem to do. I have seen this pattern among the physical sciences in general, but the engineers I have known are by far the worst about it.

I have a degree in electrical engineering from one of the top engineering schools in the US, and when I see these posts and posts like them, they make me sad and confused for those of you who relate so intensely. And I can tell you from experience that more likely than not your major isn't the problem. But I can't imagine that it's hopeless either; I'm sure you're all for the most part kind and decent young men. However, buying into this self-fulfilling, sad-sack bullshit definitely won't help you.

[–]funnynickname 1 point2 points ago

You can pretty much group my engineering friends in to two groups. Obnoxious assholes and unattractive social retards. The reason they did so well in school is because they had no friends and no chance of dating, so they really hit the books hard as an escape. Now we're out in the real world. The obnoxious assholes have girlfriends because they are socially competent and pushy. The social retards are now at the point of financial security and starting to see some action. Me, I finally lost enough weight/gained enough muscle that the occasional girl with give me the time of day for the first time in my life. Being a social retard is a vicious cycle. You can't get properly socialized because you can't properly socialize. I had to force my self to socialize.

I'd like to ask all the engineers, how hard is it to become an engineer? And, how hard is it to actually be an engineer? More specifically, a chemical engineer?

[–]kushanagi 7 points8 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not so sure about the chemical engineer but I'm currently studying engineering in Canada and I find it easy (I don't work while studying, I find internships during summers). I was pretty much a little bit above average all my life but I found out that studying what you like is way easier than studying anything else.

[–]Rabbito_17 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As a chemical engineer I can say it was hard as fuck. I thought I was smart, but quickly realized I was not that smart, I had to work my ass off to figure that shit out. I also found out later that if you want a good job as a chem e, you had to have gone to one of the better universities. I had a job as chemical engineer for 3 years after college and then somehow got into construction management ever since.

[–]tisumi 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Be prepared to work your ass off. I went from a 4.0 GPA in high school to barely getting C's and B's in my first two years of studying Mechanical Engineering at Berkeley. I got away with poor study habits in high schools but in college everyone is as smart or smarter than you, so you have to take studying up several notches just to keep up.

[–]HadACigar 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The difficulty is not so much in the material, but in learning the material. Once you understand, it is straightforward and studying is rather simple, but when you have professor's who are not very good at teaching backed by a bad textbook, some courses can become incredibly difficult.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I did a bachelor's in electrical engineering and worked as an engineer for 4 years (lawyer now though). I can't speak for everyone, but it was damn hard, though I did really, really (really) well in college. The trick for me was to actually do all the homework. Like, all of it. Nobody else did that. I could never figure out why. If I did all the assignments, every problem, that was all the studying I needed and I aced every exam. Most classes actually let you skip the final exam if you already had an A, so finals week was always a cake walk. But seriously, do all the homework. Don't cheat like everyone else does. It pays off.

I'm an engineer 10 years out of school, and it doesn't get any better.

Option #2 is your best bet (and being a well-rounded individual is something you should be trying to do anyways), so do yourselves a favor and learn something about books/art/history that don't involve dragons or elves.

[–]thecotton 21 points22 points ago

I don't get it. Do male engineers work a lot of hours? And what's wrong if the girl is too nerdy? What is this stigma attached to male engineers...

I went to school for Informatics, I understand since I was a female minority in a male dominated field, but it didn't seem like any of the Comp Sci/Informatics guys had trouble getting girlfriends.

wha... we don't? I mean of course we don't! We over here in comp sci are knee deep in pussy 24/7! I feel bad for you engineering homos.

[–]flinxsl 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

EEs are even better than you comp sci ballers. There is something about having a combination of physics, math, and weird diagrams that ladies find irresistible. Ladies can hardly volts/amperes me!

[–]throwstufff 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ladies can hardly potential/current me!

FTFY

[–]NonstandardDeviation 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

(For anyone who didn't get the joke, potential/resistance = current. If you rearrange it, resistance = potential/current.

Of course, if you use specific units, volts/amperes = ohms, which opens up the doors to plenty of puns.)

Very few girls in the major, work schedule generally precludes (generally, not always) participation in a frat or other social club. Male engineers are usually a bit 'nerdier' and therefore less likely to randomly approach a girl in a social situation, most engineers are very passive in terms of their past relationships. Basically, all of their past relationships started because of some type of forced social interaction.

Most people don't realize this and don't embrace it, not me. We were put in dorms based on our majors and on move in day I found the prettiest girl I could and then told my mom to talk to her parents. They became friends and we all went out to lunch together. We ended up hooking up a few times and then she switched majors. I ended up joining crew so that became most of my social life and then made friends with another pretty engineering girl that switched in later.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Eh, agreed, I was socially awkward and shy. My parents always make friends though so I figured I would redirect that towards someone with a hot daughter rather than someone with a son or something.

it was just when midterms came around that we disappeared for a week straight.

[–]then_IS_NOT_than 1 point2 points ago

I really don't like this "engineers are socially awkward beings who hate interaction" BS. Yes, we work with numbers and yes, our profession may be a little more technically challenging and difficult to understand but seriously, find something else to talk about.

I was never passive in my past relationships and I'm not passive in my current relationships. The vast majority of engineers that I know are social and, honestly, I don't think you can be a good engineer if you aren't.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I definitely wasn't saying that. I think I am socially ept, I was homecoming king at my high school and I've never had a problem getting a girlfriend. I just think one of the more common traits in engineering is shyness. I am shy, all of my friends have come through forced social interaction. Either studying together or doing a sport together. I knew this and I did as many activities as possible. I think its pretty common and if you identify it you can make up for it by forcing people to interact with you by doing as many activities as possible or doing something like crew where more outgoing, confident guys will introduce you to their friends at parties and help expand your circle.

Definitely not all engineers though, we have some studs in our major and we have some people that I fear for their ability to operate in the real world.

I was engineering and switched to zoology. In one of my labs I was the only girl out of 30. In another lab I was one of four girls. Lectures never had much more than 10 girls. My boyfriend is currently in a class (maybe two) with no girls at all.

My boyfriend is still in engineering (CS to be exact) so he can speak for the hours of the major. He rarely has large amounts of free time. Two weeks ago I didn't see him very much. We did nothing together because he had too much homework. This last week there was one night he didn't get home until 12:30 am. In order to see him I have to go to the lab were he works and find him. Some weeks bringing him a Monster or a sandwich is the only way I can be sure I will see him before I go to bed. He isn't even doing anything extreme, he has 4 design classes and every prof thinks they are the only class the students are taking.

[–]Kalium 1 point2 points ago

Some women in engineering respond to social pressures by being as nerdy as humanly possible to the point where it drives everyone away. Kind of an over-assimilation.

Engineering students typically have long hours, little free time, and (for the male ones) little to no social contact with women. A lot of places, you'll be socially shunned just for being an engineering student, since engineer == nerd == lame.
