these hills are perfect for creating artificial rice patties witch require those pools of water you see. I may be misremembering here, but I believe that once the rice patties on the top of the hill finish growing, they open the pool and the water flows to the pool below that one, etc etc.

No, they fill all at once when it is time to flood them. But, yes, they are fed from a stream uphill.

My brain might be broken, but this reminds me of that Rambo movie.

Bali. I've stood there a few times.

Edit : Here is the picture I took.

The funny thing is that it isn't even a spectacular padi, just happens to be where tour buses go.

They'd rather carve up a mountain to farm than go to a flat plain. Y U NO GO TO FLAT PLAIN?

All flat plains are filled with people. I learned this when I was in China. I was terrified to see what 1.2 billion people actually looked like, but just like everywhere else they're compressed into cities and land that is too challenging to be developed, like near-vertical mountain-sides, remain empty. Marginal land like this is for farms.

in case anyone is wondering, if you want your society to increase its population, have more than 2 children per couple. if you want it to remain steady have every couple have 2 children. if you want it to decline, have 1 child per couple or less (zero). this is based on a 100 year life span and 25 year old mating age with no deaths. population will peak in 4 generations if 2 children per couple at no deaths is achieved. you may want to consider the many factors not included in this for a more realistic way to increase/decrease populations. machines have already taken jobs from the masses today....what about in 20 years? what are people going to do for jobs when even more mechanization and automation occurrs? maybe i am wrong...maybe there will be more jobs somehow. what is coincidental is i am submitting this random comment under a person known as ''future slave''

Actually, you need about 2.6 children per couple to account for mortality before breeding age. Only 2 per couple will cause a decline.

In this case though, it is just a hill. Bali is a hilly little island.
