Throttle cable snapped, now he's working it manually to finish the stage.

Just in case anyone is wondering.

Yup, when its a rally, do what ever you can to set a time.

Video clip of a different race, same thing happening.

Holy crap. Wasn't sure if accordionfolder was kidding or not but I guess not. This is simultaneously hilarious and horrifying. It would seem like all kinds of against safety regulations to be not only outside of the roll cage but in the engine bay along with a bunch of moving parts and hot surfaces. I can appreciate the competitive nature of the participants but there would seem to be a limit to where completing a stage would just not be worth it.

Doesn't it get annoying to type that username in every time you log into reddit?

It's not nearly as annoying as my password.

If you think about it, that song is actually eerily applicable to Reddit.

They never really go that fast - say 30mph - in the format of a rally season, it is more important to set ANY time, then none at all. This is the same reason they will run on flat tires and rims.

[–]249ba36000029bbe9749 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've never been involved in a collision at 30 MPH while sitting in an engine bay and I don't ever plan on doing so either but I would think that it pretty much sucks a lot worse than being belted inside a roll cage with crush zone around it. And getting your hand caught in a belt at 30 MPH is going to feel pretty much the same as 5 MPH or 100 MPH.

As I said, I totally feel for the racers wanting to do all they can to stay competitive but I just think that a sanctioning body should not have rules and a points system that incentivizes racers to endanger themselves like that.

Rest in peace, Group B.

[–]Frankeh 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It was Group B rally. Pretty much anything went and it was without a doubt the most exciting time for rally.

It's like 80's F1 where there were no limits and turbos were allowed.

Besides, a rally driver crashing at 30mph just wouldn't happen. I doubt there's many times when rally drivers even go that slow. They do 15+ around hairpins for christ sake.

[–]Sixxtwo 0 points1 point ago

Agreed.

If you are 'screwed' get out of the way, finish if you can.

[–]k_of_ni 0 points1 point ago

Incorrect, this is group A Lancia Delta HF Integrale.

[–]Frankeh 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ah, my mistake. Still, Group B was the pinnacle of motorsport IMO.

Ball to the wall insanity.

[–]elbekko 3 points4 points ago

It's Group B, safety is optional and frowned upon.

[–]lostboyz 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If that is a group B lancia delta, the engine is in the back

[–]Loplop509 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a Group A Delta Integrale. Group B was the super and turbo charged Delta S4 0 - 60 in 2 seconds, on gravel.

[–]k_of_ni 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Correct. And Group B was banned after Henri Toivonen and his co-driver lost their lives in fatal accident on Corsica while driving their Lancia Delta S4, which was a group B car. It was 1986. and this image is 1990s if I'm guessing right.

[–]Loplop509 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That accident amongst others, including the RS200 that plowed into a whole load of spectators. Shame really, because while the cars we have nowadays are faster in a more sophisticated way, some of the innovations and frankly ridiculous numbers of the Group B era are something to behold.

Wadsworth Constant applies. I cam for a French guy under the bonnet of a moving car, not some shitty gear changes.

Thats the damn phrase I was looking for! I took pride in setting to the proper minute and second. Thank you again, Wadsworth.

Funny thing is, that guys was STILL yelling out turn directions from under the hood.

[–]AlexHimself 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How does this seem to happen more than once and the guys just know to jump under the hood? What are they doing differently that causes their cable to snap??

[–]Frankeh 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Jumping a few feet in the air, constantly flooring it, dirt flicking up into the engine bay, stones too, etc.

Rally is BRUTAL on cars. I saw a video once where a stone flicked up from one of the front tyres, went through the foot well and hit the co driver in the arse.

[–]k_of_ni 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Relevant, "Up in the ass of Timo" Mind you, it wasn't a stone, but a steel bar.

[–]Frankeh 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's actually what I was talking about. The way he says what happened at the end always cracks me up.

[–]k_of_ni 1 point2 points ago

Got to love finnish rally drivers. Juha Kankkunen also had a famous moment at the end of some stage. Journalist came up and asked: "Juha, what tyres did you pick for this stage". And Juha replied: "Black, round, Pirellis" with pokerface on.

[–]Frankeh 1 point2 points ago

[–]non_iron 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yep, I've done this to get home after a snapped throttle cable.

Made it about 10kms with some insulated electrical wire coming in the drivers window for a hand operated accelerator.

Then 2kms from home it snapped, so my mate was sitting up on the passenger side window sill and reaching into the engine bay to do the throttle.

Car was a 1975 Mazda Capella with the reverse opening bonnet, same as the picture.

And that children, is why Autobots don't transform with people still inside them.

[–]Cdf12345 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh but they do. Here is graphic video evidence, people get in the transformer that has transformed into a car around 40 seconds and the transformer forgets about the people and un-transforms a little past the 1 minute mark.

(This whole video is worth watching, especially for the cameos of Reggie Miller and Judge Reinhold)
