Before everyone gets sentimental over The Starry Night painting and how captivated van Gogh must have been by natural beauty, I'd just like to add some interesting background to the piece which may or may not change the way you look at it. The scene that he painted was the view from outside his window at Saint-Paul Asylum. No one's quite sure what he meant to convey in the piece or if he meant for it to convey anything at all, but the style used in this painting, the style he is known for, is known to be a visual interpretation of how he felt when he suffered panic attacks. Also, the paintings made during the era of his life when this was created had notably sad and lonely themes. He shot himself about 6 months after painting The Starry Night. Do what you'd like with this information, but for me it makes the piece a bit more intriguing.

I see the attraction of this, but Van Gogh's painting is about is going on in his head rather than what is in the sky. This puts what is in his head in a more realistic setting and it grates, because the real sky doesn't work like that.

This is absolutely beautiful... I have Chopin's waltzes playing in the background. The combination of that music and this imagery made me completely just track of time; I became completely immersed in the picture.
