Since alot of redditors are Americans, I'm surprised that no one has noticed that America is the 1%. Just because you are less wealthy than the wealthest does not make you poor. If you can feed, clothe, and provide a home for yourself, then trust me. You are not "truly" poor.

[–]yetii8 11 points12 points ago

This movement is not about being poor. And it's especially not about being poor by global standards. Even the most doltish American understands the relatively, they are privileged (but still by your global definition of poor, 1 in 5 Americans are poor). This movement it's about the ever-increasing marriage between cooperate America and our government, which has precipitated in the overwhelming concentration of wealth at the top. Just because we relatively have it "good," doesn't mean we should turn our heads to economic injustice.

[–]poli421 2 points3 points ago

I think you are being naive in what you believe the most "doltish" Americans to understand. I think a large majority of this "99%" movement dont understand exactly how "good" they have it.

[–]yetii8 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So you're saying that if they have it "good," by you're definition (i.e. can feed themselves and aren't completely homeless), they should shut up and accept our cooperate run government?

You are disconnected from reality. The ones protesting are those who have lost their jobs while their CEOs are making millions, those who have lost their houses, those who cannot afford education or healthcare...

But keep believing that just because you are ok everyone else is.

edit: the astro turf is strong in reddit lately.

[–]poli421 0 points1 point ago

Well what im talking about is that those protesting are claiming to be representatives of the 99% of Americans that aren't billionaires. What im saying is that a large majority of the 99% of Americans that the protesters are claiming to represent, not the protesters themselves necessarily, don't understand just how "good" they have it. And while were on the protesters, I don't think a large portion of the protesters themselves have a clear consensus of what it is they are protesting. I have seen a lot of video of the protests, and most of them wouldn't actually agree upon what it is they are protesting.

[–]TheZUL -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The 99% VS 1% you speak of is based on wealth distribution. I'm pretty sure most of the protesters if not all of them would fit into this 99% category.

Honestly, I don't think a lot of them have it "that good" even by international standards. When you're a college graduate with 50k in debt and can't find a job... you're doing 50k worse than the poor African who lives in a mud hut eating insects and veggies he planted. The only real difference they should be thankful is for family, handouts, and government assistance that keeps them alive.

As yetii8 said, protesting isnt about being poor by global standards anyways. As a citizen of a country you should be helping to improve your country and help out your fellow citizens. That's what the protest is about. Changing the government to be less corporate-based and more citizen-based.

If you expect them to have a clear consensus that's crazy. The American political system is very complicated and not easy for the 99% to understand. All they understand is the government has abandoned them for corporations and money. The government works for the 1%. They are the 99% and they want the government to change. That's what they have consensus on and that's enough. They're getting out that idea and letting people all over know they're fed up.

PS: They also do have assemblies 1-2 times a day to discuss what everyone wants. With thousands of people though, they can't agree on everything, that's why the system is so slow. It's not like they aren't trying though, it's not just a bunch of whiny kids. I have a lot of respect for them.

I'm not trying to be a rabble-rouser, but could you point me to any specific articles regarding economic injustice? If a company wants to donate money to a specific political affiliation, who is to say that they can't? The only economic injustice i see currently is wasteful spending in the stimulus plan and loopholes in taxing.

[–]yetii8 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wasteful spending in the form of stimulus? Half was tax breaks, by the way. Also, when the private sector isn't spending, the public isn't spending, the government needs to spend. Economic injustice means livable wages, affordable education (without banks profiting off loans), the option to unionize. Why shouldn't companies be able to buy legislative power? For example, the repeal of Glass-Steagal which would have buffered the recession.

[–]MRB0B0MB 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"when the private sector isn't spending, the public isn't spending, the government needs to spend." Where are they going to get the money from if people don't want to spend? If there is an economic crisis, you would think the government would need to spend less....not more. It doesn't make sense at all to say that.

[–]yetii8 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not sure who you are referring to when you say, "Where are THEY," I think you mean the government. When private sector tightens up, the consumer base is worried about their job and their credit is tapped, and the government refuses to either infuse capitol into the system or create jobs programs, we have a Depression. Not slowed grow, not recession. A Depression. This is exactly what happened in 1929-32. FDR pulled us out with farm subsidies, work programs (aphlabet soups). And when the "Conservative Coalition" began to repeal some of these programs in the late 30s the recovery slowed. And when you say, "The government would need to spend less," this is where deficit spending comes into play, which should be reserved for these dire situations not unfunded wars and tax cuts.

[–]MRB0B0MB 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But, the only way we truly bounced back from the recession is though WWII. All FDR did was temporarily motivate our farmers with the "New Deal." This is a great example of what the stimulus bill does. It may provide a temporary boost to the economy but eventually, the mask falls off, and we are back where we started again. I am not saying we need a war to get the economy up and running again, but we need something to boost the confidence of spending in our country. Us, having a fiat currency, have nothing to base it on except our feelings about the economy (because we got off the gold standard). Government spending is just a mask. It may work in the short term, but in the long term our debt just grows larger.

The problem is American wealth distribution is on par with 3rd world dictatorships.

It's not about being able to buy food, it's about not having politicians who aren't bought by corporations.

[–]yetii8 1 point2 points ago

I saw them recently on a news cast on my 55 inch LCD that I was forced to buy from a major corporation. I thought it was so wrong that they have so much money. I remember jumping into my Ford explorer (also forced upon me to buy and built with Union slave labor) and running down to market and being forced to buy beer made by another slave driven corporation. I looked at the people using the ATM and thought "Those people are slaves. Being forced to buy things with money that is being served to them by major banks...also slave driven".

I went home, turned on the AC and jumped into my bed and dreamed of a world that didn't have any of these slave institutions. What a nightmare!

The Queen and Prince Philip actually work really damn hard year round raising money for charities, going to charity functions, and generally putting a lot of effort into helping the poorest people living in the UK. Yes, they have elegant lifestyles, but that's life in the monarchy. It's not like they don't work hard for it. Of all the people in the 1%, these two care more for, and do more for, the other 99% than most people ever will.

Until you realize you can have all the women (or men), drugs and alcohol money can buy. You can date models, actors/ess, public figures. You can try every drug you want because rehab will be nothing more than penny change for you. Or...

You can travel the world and meet different cultures and people. You can try several religions to see what they are all about. You can actually take the time to understand the world around you.

Pretending for even a second that people with virtually unlimited wealth are miserable is deluding yourself.

[–]pbostrom 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i guess this person is an american.

why? because he has obviously not a clue what royal families can do. Women? launch the media fire!, drugs? we are talking 10 pages in the fanciest of fanciest of tabloids, alcohol?, same as drugs.

i pity the royal family because the moment they step out of the door they are watched. and they will be scrutinized if they chose the wrong partner. heck even Edward VIII had to abdicate because he loved a woman with no royal blood, mind you she was still abit classy.

you can not travel the world. and meet different cultures and people, every day every year(maybe some weeks vacation) they are ordered to be ambassadors for their countries and have to meet people they dont like and be nice.

you can not try other religions, the Queen is head of church of england for example.

pretending that royal family is the same thing as virtually unlimited wealth is ignorant and naive.

they are hard workers and more than enough make up for the salary they get.

yes even royals get salary

People complain about the Queen, but I agree with you. they work damn hard. I get pissed off when I hear for people saying "They cost too much, tear the whole institution down". So, for these ignorant people, I gathered the following facts.

The Queen:

Recently celebrated her 84th birthday

Carries out around 400 official engagements each year

Is patron of 620 charities

Has undertaken over 256 official overseas visits to 129 different countries

Hosted 91 state banquets.

Is paid £7.9 million a year by the state to do her job.

Hasn't received a pay rise for 20 years

Pays income tax, capital gains tax, VAT and council tax.

dips into her private funds, boosting the Civil List with around £7 million of her own each year.

No Civil List money goes to the Queen's children or minor royals.

The cost to maintain the royal estate is now around £170 million per year (estimated to cost each UK taxpayer £2.60 pence a year) (not crown land, which is owned by the state). But the revenue paid to the UK from the royal lands is around £220 million. The United Kingdom earns millions of pounds in profit, every year from the Royal Family.

It is estimated that every year, 12 million tourists visit London for the royals, spending around 7,000 million pounds.

If the government stopped paying the Royal Family’s living and state expenses the Royals would be forced to take back the profits from their land. And your taxes, would go up.

I've been reading the 99% posts all morning. It seems like at least half of them could be prevented by common sense. "I have an art degree, 20K in debt, and can't find a job." WHAT DID YOU THINK WAS GOING TO HAPPEN WHEN YOU MAJORED IN FUCKING ART?!@ "21 years old, single mother." ...That is your own fault.
