Clearly, there is a math lab in this neighborhood.

I used to live next to a math lab. Damned calc heads would do it right on the front porch. Talking about pis, and all sorts of irrational things. Some of them were so deep into it; the line between real and imaginary would blur.

My math professor is foreign and says math as "meth". The website where we have to do our homework is called "MyMathLab". She pronounces it "MyMethLab" all the time.

True story: While driving through Indiana with a friend, I got pulled over. The cop informed me that I was clocked by an airplane a half a mile or so back. He then says:

"They use a very complicated math formula to figure out your speed."

My asshole friend blurts out" "Distance equals rate times time? What's so complicated about that?"

So yeah, I got the ticket before I could even attempt to talk my way out of it.

EDIT: to include a word I missed.

That's when you panic and go "officer thank god! This fucking maniac was hiding in my backseat and kidnapped me! He said he'd gut me with a knife if I didn't drive him around!"

[–]calvindog717 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Officer, I'm so sorry, basic algebra wasn't in my driving test, so I tried to solve the problem on the sign and got 90...

[–]Airazz 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In US they use airplanes to check your speed? Holy fuck... land of the free, you say...

[–]maddenman2000 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Only in parts that are patrolled by aircraft. To my knowledge they only do this on the freeway.

[–]DasBeerBoot 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Holy fuck. I thought that pic is a joke.

[–]dormedas 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Google VASCAR. Once you see the sign, it's best to stay within 5 or 10 of the limit, erring towards five. It's not a widespread practice (because it costs a bit to keep a plane in the air).

[–]wellwatch 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've only heard of ultralight (powered parachute) things being used to enforce it, but I've never actually heard of anyone getting pulled over.

[–]electronicdream 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not free to do whatever the fuck you want.

Do planes limit your freedom?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's more math going on other than distance equals rate times time. Both the airplane and the car are moving

[–]Drumlin 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hahahaha....thats pretty funny.

Cop in airplane knows distance between marker A and marker B.

Cop starts stopwatch when car passes marker A.

Cop stops stopwatch when car passes marker B.

What other math is there?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

yeah your right, when I hear the word "clocked" I think of radar being used and the math of the radar gun.

[–]TypeSafe 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As I said in another comment, you need the mean value theorem in order to prove that the target actually exceeded the speed limit at any given point in the interval.

[–]Locke1337 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is simple trigonometry. I am doing a similar thing in grade 12 physics right now.

[–]Drumlin 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Guys...think about it...it's D=R x T. The cop knows D, and uses a clock for T.

Sheesh.

[–]TypeSafe 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nope, actually you need a more rigorous argument via the mean value theorem to prove that the target actually exceeded the speed limit at any point in the interval.

[–]Drumlin 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, I am no math genius, but I am pretty sure this would not be a whole hell of a lot of help in court.

If point A and point B were 1 mile apart, and I travelled between those two points, in say, 50 seconds, how is the mean value theorem going to help my defense, assuming the speed limit is 55 miles per hour?

[–]TypeSafe 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You traveled an average of 0.02 miles per second. However, there is no law against traveling an average speed. If you never traveled over 55 miles an hour in that interval, you would be free and clear.

[–]Drumlin 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hey, buddy, put your pencil down and use your head. It is impossible for a car to travel 1 mile in less than 1 minute without exceeding 55 miles per hour.

[–]TypeSafe 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Prove it.

[–]Drumlin 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

D=1 Mile. R=60 MPH T=1 Minute.

1 mile=60miles/h x 1 minute.

Proven.

[–]Drumlin 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also, there is a law against travelling an average speed, if that average speed exceeds the posted speed limit.

He is fifteen and I asked him what it was. After about 20-30 seconds, he said: "165".

I asked him how he got to that answer and he said:

60/4 = 15 and 300/4 = 125... wait.. 95.. wait.. 75. So 90. So x = 75. wait no, x = 90.

"... what is your final answer..."

.. "90"

"Are you sure?"

after another 20-30 seconds

"........ 45"

He is 15 years old.
