If you live an a building/house/apartment that accepts animals and you do not suffer from a horrible pet allergy ALWAYS ADOPT. If you can rescue an older animal please do so. It can be a lot of work but is always worth it.

This. Next summer the plan is that my boyfriend and I are moving into a flat for our own, even if we were to break up by then I'm gonna find a place that allows pets. I live in london so I will be adopting old inside cats. I don't want to adopt a cat used to the outdoors and then force it to be an inside cat.

If you can't adopt, look at the shelters around you, if you can, donate something now and then. When you can give them a fiver instead of having your lunch fancy coffee, every bit helps.

When Redditors adopt cats, Those cats are adopted into a life of pageantry and jesting. What a glorious life that must be!

I've got like 30 cats now but no camera to take a picture.

I had a JD style daydream about me rescuing a cat, it didn't end up like the reddit posts. I struggled to get the little guy home, for throughout the journey, I had my face and arms scratched the fuck up. When i did get him home, he pissed on everything, and left a turd on my coffee table, I then left him in the backyard of the town cat-lady.

If nothing else, you can donate time, money or supplies to a local shelter or ASPCA. Every little bit helps!

just go adopt from a shelter, that's an excellent thing to do that will get you life karma, there's way too many animals out there ready for a home. My mom volunteers and I adopted recently, best feeling in the world, and he's super pretty :D

Every time I see a possibly stray cat in neighborhoods I think, "Yes! This will get me so much karma!" But then Mr. Mittens runs away from me into the enveloping night. :(

EDIT: Spelling and such.

There's a really nice cat that's been running around my neighborhood, but she's very clean and people-friendly, so I'm not sure if she's actually a stray, but I enjoy when she shows up at night sometimes, so I leave out a dish of water and some tuna for her just in case.

Depending on where you live, you're probably not actually feeding the cat unless you see it eating the food. In the south we have possums all over the place and they'll eat anything.

Yeah, I see her eat part of it and leave it alone, but then everything is empty in the morning. I think she either finishes in the night or the raccoons probably got the rest.

i recently adopted a stray under similar circumstances. she was clean, seemed healthy, and was extremely friendly, so we couldn't imagine initially that she was really a stray. well, she was actually half starved to death, her pads were scraped and torn, she had fleas, worms and ear mites, and at 3 pounds she was carrying a litter of 6 kittens in her(as we learned when she was spayed). we brought her in and fed her, checked the lost&found boards in kijiji.com, local supermarkets, phone poles, etc. no one was looking for her. don't let friendliness fool you, some cats just have amazing personalities even in the worst conditions.

Britomart has now probably put on 2 pounds in the month we've had her, she's free of mites/fleas/parasites/kittens, and she's turned out to be the absolute best cat we could have hoped for. cats in need have a knack for finding sympathetic people, and even a healthy seeming stray can be surprisingly close to meeting their end.

if that cat isn't a stray, the worst that happens is you return it to its owners when they post that she's missing, but you could end up with a happy, grateful pet.

Haven't you heard? Its free karma! The act itself of doing good is no longer enough.

that's why anybody does anything nice on reddit. for the sweet sweet karma of posting what they did.

I thought it was to just share things with the intent of finding mutual interest.

But i guess meaningless internet points are srs bsns

[–]devbang[S] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i think that's the original intent, but when you put points to something people become srs bsns

I think people are just saying that because they're jealous. We all find cats incredibly cute, and I enjoy seeing all the pictures of happy cats. If I got one, I'd take a picture of it too just because I know there's others like me. But I have a dog, and in the perfect world, I would love for them to get along and be best friends... but that might not happen, and a shitstorm will ensue.

You can always foster cats too...until they find permanent residence that way its not a permanent thing and you will still be helping immensely!

Do it! I volunteer at a no-kill cat shelter and believe me, every adoption helps more than you could imagine.

please, reddit. please stop referring to adopting an animal from a shelter as "rescuing" it.

it's just unnecessary.

[–]devbang[S] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

but most of them are referring to taking a stray off the street and taking care of it.

[–]rezloh -1 points0 points ago

some, yes. most? no.

[–]Erinnerin 0 points1 point ago

i don't really think so. your home is worlds better than a shelter, unless you live in a wire cage.

[–]rezloh 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

oh, of course. that goes without saying.

i guess i just don't understand why people need to call their cat a "rescue cat" when simply saying "cat" will suffice. to my mind, adopting an animal from a shelter instead of buying one from a store is the responsible thing to do and, really, kind of a no-brainer. i just don't see the point in advertising it. that's all.

[–]Erinnerin 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i see. i'd never heard "rescue cat" before. that guy should rescue a cat!

You really don't... I found one five days ago and it has been running around my tiny apartment. Little to my knowledge, my city has a huge problem with stray animals. Every last shelter is filled with a long waiting list, and the pound isn't even showing them for adoption before they kill them. It is kind of a dilemma.

I have rescue cats that still need homes. I will deliver to your door (you can find original information in my comment history). I know it is a long shot but I want to find them homes so badly. Think of the kittens. And the karma.
