Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  6. No animated images. Please submit them to /r/gif, /r/gifs, or /r/reactiongifs instead.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Yeah, you'd think whomever designed this thing could have realized they should put little sprayers on both sides about 6" off the ground that spray a nice conical fan-spray of warm water, with drains at the bottom. Sort of like, oh I don't know, a car-wash under-carriage spray.

Maybe that comes later down the line, but either way, it would keep the walls cleaner, and I'm sure the water could be used for irrigation.

I think there have been several well-controlled studies that show things like "cow scratchers" increase milk production. Bottom line: Make cows happier for more money.

I have no idea. It's been about 12 years since I took what was maybe my favorite lab class ever "Animal Science 101". I know that many production animals have quality-of-life issues that need to be addressed to increase production.

This appears to be most apparent in dairy cows, where levels of stress hormones can drop milk production, but I remember reading a study where one large feedlot tracked steer that were shipped in and found that those that rode closest to the cab of the semi in the trailer pen (where the exhaust fumes backwashed over them more, and it was noisier) did not grow as well or "finish" as well at the feedlot as those that rode in the back.

I know there are some farmers on reddit, and they'd be a much better authority on that.

I would never say something like that. I mean, I'm sure they do, but those words are defined by us as they are felt by us, and I'm 100% certain that what cows feel is not comparable to what we feel.

In other words: I try very hard not to anthropomorphize animals, because it's not really fair. That said, of course animals have emotions. They have evolved to function in VERY hard times, which is basically what nature is all the time. It's a fight for survival. Through selective breeding, we have altered livestock's mental characteristics quite a bit.

For instance: You won't see a "dairy bull" outside of a few highly specialized farms that harvest their semen, or outside of a professional rodeo. Dairy cows are skinny with big tits and easygoing. Dairy bulls are thin, fast, athletic, and downright violent. Almost uncontrollably so.

The term I like to use is "stress free". That means whatever it needs to mean to any given animal for them to produce for us, and studies show that it must be addressed or an animals' product suffers in quality and quantity. Selective breeding is mostly focused on maximizing the commercial characteristics of livestock, so what we're left with is environmental modification so that our livestock is relatively "stress free" and produces better.

You could call it "happy", but I think that's another unfair humanization that misses the point.

I am not a farmer. I have never raised livestock, but I come from an area where all my friends did back in the day, and I have a very rudimentary understanding of the concept based on some classes I took in college.
