We don't have nearly enough technology devoted to abusing children.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've got machines that can wash my clothes or cook my dinner in 60 seconds, but if I want to thrash my kid with a phallic tentacle I have to do it myself.

[–]DrHankPym 67 points68 points ago

And so I ask you this one question: Have you ever tried simply turning off the TV, sitting down with your children, and hitting them?

Its all in the wrists. You have to follow through, like in tennis. Serves em right.

I find it kind of amusing that while the classroom seems bent on cold conformity, that the artist still saw fit to have the kids dressed randomly, rather than wearing uniforms as would have been the case in any Japanese school in the sixties (and most of them now).

The use of furigana (the little phonetic characters above each kanji) is also kind of funny, because that generally means this was intended for kids to read about. "See, Shota? You had better behave... because someday the paddle-bots will beat you senseless."

[–]conniesewer 1 point2 points ago

[–]pjayb 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

At the risk of sounding pedantic, Japanese schoolchildren don't wear uniforms until middle school, so the drawing is at least accurate in that regard.

[–]deoxxa 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Correct. The only "uniform" that grade school kids need to wear (at least in the Tokyo metro area) is a correctly coloured school bag and sometimes a hat.

[–]dreamendDischarger 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's what I thought too. It seems weird to have such strict enforcement without the uniforms as well. I guess the artist must have thought that'd be too depressing?

[–]cydril 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Even though its japanese, I think the subject may be a western area. I see more styles of clothes/hair and features of western children than you usually find in 60s japanese art. Plus the real kid is definitely not Asian.

[–]krustychocolate 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sleep easy knowing that your children are getting the best care in their education that money can buy! Watch as Timmy is beaten to death in front of his classmates by an analog radio for daring to type 78000 in the monitor as a half ass attempt to spell "BOOBS" from his constant brain damage. Marvel in the electronic screen used to broadcast the children's teacher who has apparently traded in her spine for a tasteless yellow number she currently wears to appear professional in the workplace! As John is demonstrating in the second row right seat, enough beatings will result in the sick desire for more punishment, as if a sweet release from the Hell that is his life! And if all fails in bringing your children the most possible in the form of education, the classroom comes equipped with a lobotomized child in the right corner who has only been taught destruction and horror as he gazes upon his next kill! Also, one kid is apparently Clark Kent or something.

I absolutely love the Khan Academy math and science videos. Thanks for sharing this, I never knew he did a TED talk!

[–]happybadger 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'll drink to that! He's surprisingly well-spoken, and the idea itself falls in line perfectly with my ideal education system (very heavy Montessori/anti-schooling influence). If they were to stop treating laptops like gimmicks and incorporate that kind of teaching into the curriculum, you would see such a radical change in the students and their grades from the start, and the best part is that the same idea can be translated into any subject without changing how it works. Put it in a music class and you're teaching music theory to children who fancy themselves tone deaf.

When people finally realize the benefits of letting computers do COMPUTATIONS (only after you understand how to do the computations and what they mean by hand), then we can advance to the next level of education. Hundreds of years ago, you couldn't ask complicated word problems like we do now. Hundreds of years from now, we'll be able to ask more abstract, theoretical questions.

Puts me in mind of an essay I wrote in school around the fifth or sixth grade (age 10 or 11 for those not in the USA). It was about "schools of the future," and I played it for humor. I still have it, somewhere in my files, almost forty years later, but of course can't lay hand to it just now when I need it! Anyway, what I remember most clearly is this bit: (something about students waiting in a queue before a vending machine) "A collective groan of anguish arose as the red 'sold out' light came on in one all-important column: too many students had been sitting too long in front of too many computer terminals--and now they'd run out of Preparation H." (Preparation H being, at the time, if it isn't still, a well-known hemorrhoid cream.)

There was also a bit about the lunchroom: "Chunks of meat torn seconds before from the haunches of screaming [...]s shot past the business end of a flamethrower to land, still quivering, on a student's lunch tray."

[–]Damaband41 1 point2 points ago
