Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Why does he think America (in general) is freaking about this trolling going around on facebook?? I haven't really seen anyone complaining

I think the point is that they don't care (or don't care enough to do something about it) about the banks stealing money...the FB part was "a color note"

Your popular cynical sounding comment has deprived the greater reddit population with what should have been incite-full knowledge on not only how much more Americans care about their Facebook accounts than how their tax dollars are spent, but you probably also kept a few more people thinking that way. So thanks for NOT helping in that department.

It's not only what has been paid out but what has been committed. Also, this doesn't include the $16 trillion doled out by the federal reserve.

[–]drfishy 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yup, and then there's the part where it's hard to steal what was given to you. Yeah, the banks are shitty, but they didn't walk into Fort Knox and waltz out with a $1 Trillion bill. They were given every penny by elected officials. Before we blame the scotch-swiggers, please consider casting at least a bit of the blame towards the thugs (from any political party) that we elected to lead our country and oversee our finances.

Now, about that roast beef, Charlie...

What, TARP is fucking pennies when you consider the rape and pillage that is our economic system. All this bailout nonsense is hand-waving while they continue to extract wealth from the entire world, including the damn planet itself.

edit: think I'm raving, look at this link from r/worldnews, this is what I'm talking about. All those foreclosed homes the federal lenders (Fannie, Freddie)have been sitting on, claiming they did not want to flood the market, are going to be bulk-auctioned off to private equity firms in closed negotiations.

[–]lurkersaurus 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Of course, all those people did take out loans that they could not afford.

Personal responsibility seems to be out of fashion these days.

[–]hollisterrox 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If a lender doesn't require verifiable employment/income information before handing out a loan, how responsible are they being?

[–]lurkersaurus -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why does it have to be one way or the other?

I am not saying the banks are not at fault. I completely agree that they cut corners and failed to do their jobs. I am simply saying that the borrowers share some of that responsibility as well.

[–]Ididerus 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Are the CEOs of major corporations holding personal responsibility when they receive hundreds of millions of dollars in compensation, just to run their company into the ground? The picture is always bigger...

[–]lurkersaurus 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Are the CEOs the ones talking to mr and mrs smith about taking a loan they cant afford to pay back? I am pretty sure they arent. I am pretty sure that a CEO has very little to do with the day to day operation of their company.

The picture is always bigger. It is not always all encompassing, though.

Do they share responsibility? Yes. That is one of the things about being the boss. You are responsible for everything that happens at your company. If a policy you put in place ends up driving your company into the dirt, then you take the hit for it.

HOWEVER, that is up to the shareholders and the board of directors to decide. The CEO is accountable to them. Not to you.

A bunch of fucks taking out loans that they cant pay and then defaulting on them is probably not something the top tiers at the banks though about. Should they have? Oh yeah. But that does not remove responsibility from the fucks taking out the loans.

I could have retired at 35. The stock market collapse basically destroyed any future I had planned. Trust me. No one on reddit is more pissed about the housing market crash than I am.

[–]chessandfitness 12 points13 points ago

Agreed that this makes absolutely no sense. I live in canada. I've heard my government, my co-workers, my friends, my family, the press, foreign governments, filmmakers, and reddit talk about the bank bailouts and related issues for YEARS.

I never even heard about facebook charging money, call me out of the loop. The assertion that "america" cares more about the facebook rumors then the bank bailouts can only be described as absolutely, positively wrong. The only reason this is on the frontpage is because reddit loves the idea of americans being trivial.

Finally, "Stealing" at best is a vast oversimplification of what happened. Upvote for dollarduration.

[–]genesis11 -4 points-3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

While I do not agree with the post OP made, I still find it rather curious this rallying mentality from the american redditors against anything that could remotely be seen as a negative statement againts the USA.

I can't help but feel that there has been a shift in the american - "rest of the world" polarity on reddit since the digg migration.

EDIT: Stupidity

[–]Ze_Carioca 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think the problem is not that they insulted the US, but the generalization they made. The banks didnt steal any money. It was legally done through the government and paid back. How is that theft? Next, they call all Americans stupid.

[–]genesis11 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have the feeling that it is a combination of insulting the US and generalization, I think this kind of posts bring out the worst in people.

Usually post which point out some less desirable issues about the US and which are well founded and well thought out, will have good and educational debates on Reddit.

I suppose I diden't construct my original argument well enough.

I just have one question: Who are 'they'?

[–]Ze_Carioca 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is hard to have a well thought out discussion when you reframe the issue and insult everyone in a country.

[–]dougmansion 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think I see this "rallying mentality" too often. I can't speak to what happened before the digg migration (I was more or less part of it), but there have been plenty of popular posts and comments since I have been here about how the US government is hypocritical/corrupt and its people are hypocritical/misguided/stupid/lazy/fat.

This particular post seems to be getting backlash because the TARP bailouts were (1) leagal and (2) a huge deal and a point of contention for many people, with its repercussions arguably shaping much of America's current political landscape. In addition, there was no lasting mass hysteria about facebook charging, just the normal uninformed/unsure people that copy-pasted a status, and yet this was used to show how an entire nation is stupid. If American redditors can't identify with either part of the the meme, it just comes across as America-bashing for the sake of America-bashing (and karma-whoring).

[–]genesis11 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree there are lot of anti american posts on reddit, but why dignify that kind of trash with so much attention.

I can only agree with you on the second paragraph, it sums it up in a nice way.

[–]dougmansion 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Americans identify themselves with America, and I get the impression there is a strong national pride even amongst those that think the nation is heading in the wrong direction (or already there). If American redditors identify with America and think it's getting a raw deal, it doesn't seem odd that they'd come to defend it, whether with their downvotes or with negative comments.

Whether or not that's the best way to deal with "that kind of trash" is another matter, and I can see why you might think it less that optimal to react this way to something as silly and ephemeral as a Scumbag America meme.

[–]baxter45 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Or maybe America isn't one person and some of us hate being generalized. It's like saying Americans don't want Palestine to get statehood at the UN. While that may be true for some of us, it's not true for others. What you're seeing here is a united backlash against stupidity, not blind support for America.

[–]genesis11 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Everybody hates being generalized, no matter which country they're from. what I don't understand why it is nessecary to get stupid posts like this one so much attention, and use the same kind of rethoric and generalization as OP.

[–]baxter45 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Everybody hates being generalized, no matter which country they're from.

Exactly. We can extrapolate from this and understand it's not

a shift in the american - "rest of the world" polarity

It's just people that don't want to be generalized. As for the rest of your comment, I don't know why posts like this get so much attention. Downvote and move on, says I.

A friend of mine reposted the message yesterday, to which I felt obligated to point a few things out..

Facebook's business model is based on generating income through advertisements placed on a free, high-volume website. If you bought the "membership fee" nonsense for even a second, then consider the following..

-The economy is down, Facebook knows better than to ask people for money that isn't there.

-Facebook's users would be slashed by at LEAST 50-75%, and the membership fees generated by the remaining users would be substantially less than the amount of money currently generated by advertisements on the site.

-Facebook would basically be giving the title of "#1 social networking website" to Google+.

Think about the ruckus that would be started..... The funny thing is all of the horrible shit that has happened and gotten less coverage than facebook, riots, hurricanes, earthquakes, nuclear reactors, fraud by the wealthiest 1 percent to horrible degrees, the republican party, the democratic party, the tea party, rick perry. who gives a fuck about facebook. i deleted mine a while ago. facebook was only good when it was only for college students.

I don't know... 116,010,760 (US facebook users [est.]) x $9.99 (supposed facebook fee) x 36 months (approximate length of time people have had to get angry since everything went to hell in September, 2008) = $41,722,109,700. It's less than the banks have taken obviously, but it does put the massive effect into perspective. (you know, if everybody decided to pay to keep it of course...)

  1. The TARP funds were repaid. Even if they weren't repaid, they weren't "stolen", they were "given" (rightly or wrongly) by our duly-elected leaders. To say it was "stolen" would be like saying all government subsidies and stimulus (not to mention welfare) is "stolen".

  2. Even if the money were "stolen" people have freaked out a lot more about the bank bailouts than about facebook. Please remember that "bitching about it on Reddit and Facebook" =/= "the total amount of concern among the population". It's a common mistake, admittedly.

Except, they're not all Americans, it'd be like 4 12 billion.

American Shmamerican. Stealing $96 billion yearly is still worthy of outrage.

People gave a shit, just not enough to compel them to do anything substantive about it (kinda like this facebook thing).

Thats the US for you, 9 times out of 10 laziness and passivity outweigh anger.

Uh, what? Neither of the things you mentioned on this picture are accurate reflections of the national response to these two issues.

If you really want to start an anti-America thread, pick one of the reasonable things to get riled up about.

You cant complain Americans , you choose to live there .

I would say people gave equal shits and were equally ineffectual at doing anything about it.

Disillusioned and disenfranchised.

Grown in a society that at best can be considered intellectually lazy and in places outright hostile to any type of rational thought.

Bombarded every second with pro-consumer, anti-environmetal propoganda.

Every little nook and cranny, every niche, every subculture and counterculture has been subverted, sliced, diced, prepackaged and sold off at a profit that most will never see.

It's no wonder the latest generation has their priorities all screwed up and can't comprehend the big picture outside the latest consumer fad.

tell me redditor, how many times do you vote for an american idol? and it doesn't bother you that people regularly PAY for more votes for their favorite american idol than voted for any presidential candidate?

Woah, it's been a while I haven't seen a thread enraging redditors so much.

Now on OP's input:

I understand the rage concerning this post. Reddiquette says I should not downvote you because of your opinion, and voting system is to encourage healthy and thoughtful discussions. So I don't think upvotes are the most fitting (still I will not downvote you). The reactions is understandable, as saying the whole country is all over facebook is downright wrong.

Still OP, I somehow understand that your facebook friend and family circle has been promoting this stupid lie, and you think now that everyone else does too.

Well you're half right, since the Facebook F8 keynote, the stupid message has been strongly diffused throughout facebook, so much that on september 25, Facebook on his Facebook account (insert Inception joke somewhere in here) had to put the claims to rest by posting a message about it. Normally, this kind of BS is pretty much ignored by Facebook, since there will be always people telling that, but this time the message got pretty far.

So, yes OP, I understand what you are trying to say, but must of the downvotes don't stem from this fact, it is also the way you put it. And you're frequent account switching , not mentioning the background concerning them.

...ah screw it, Have an upboat, you had guts to put this in here, receive a lot of downvotes and you didn't deleted your comments, despite all the counterage (which is very valid)

I've already blocked r/politics. If there were some way to block retardedly sensationalist posts as well I would have it made.

I saw one of my friends younger sisters post something in regards to this and she was legitimately upset. I believe at least 30 comments followed.

lets see, which is more taboo to talk about:

A) chain letters spread by dumbasses

B) talking about politics with your friends

the answer is obvious. i dont want to read about all my buddies political thoughts, regardless if i agree with some, i will be furious at others.

i had to unsubscribe from my friend when he kept posting his Ron Paul zealot stuff over and over.

Doesn't give a shit about government stealing billions from taxpayers to bail out banks.

FTFY. Government is not here to help you. Ever. The evil, scumbag banks (and I am not being sarcastic) did not steal the money. It was given to them by policymakers who are every bit as corrupt as they are...on both sides of the aisle. Government is the problem...not the banks themselves. Who would the sleazeballs go to if the politicians were not complicit?
