Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Homosexual sexual encounters occur in nature, not homosexual life partners.

Your move.

Uh, actually..

An estimated one-quarter of all black swans pairings are homosexual and they steal nests, or form temporary threesomes with females to obtain eggs, driving away the female after she lays the eggs.[34][35] More of their cygnets survive to adulthood than those of different-sex pairs, possibly due to their superior ability to defend large portions of land. The same reasoning has been applied to male flamingo pairs raising chicks.[36][3

Also, Elephants

African and Asian males will engage in same-sex bonding and mounting. Such encounters are often associated with affectionate interactions, such as kissing, trunk intertwining, and placing trunks in each other's mouths. Male elephants, who often live apart from the general herd, often form "companionships", consisting of an older individual and one or sometimes two younger, attendant males with sexual behavior being an important part of the social dynamic.** Unlike heterosexual relations, which are always of a fleeting nature, the relationships between males may last for years.** The encounters are analogous to heterosexual bouts, one male often extending his trunk along the other's back and pushing forward with his tusks to signify his intention to mount. Same-sex relations are common and frequent in both sexes, with Asiatic elephants in captivity devoting roughly 45% of sexual encounters to same-sex activity.

Wrong.

Homo penguins. Together from six years ago up til present. Raised a penguin chick on their own. From article: "Roy and Silo are hardly unusual. Indeed, scientists have found homosexual behavior throughout the animal world."

EDIT: Oh hey, the same thing happened with penguins in both a German zoo and a zoo in China. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/unleashed/2009/06/gay-penguin-dads-in-german-zoo-hatch-chick.html

very true. there's no such thing as an animal that prefers males to females. there's just animals that prefer to have sex NOW rather than later. so they'll put it in a pooper or two.

more like prison than homosexuality.

I pretty sure a lot of female animals prefer males to females.

Most people use the "unnatural" argument to try to explain that homosexuality wasn't intended by mother nature, god, or what have you.

I think showing sexual encounters is enough to disprove this logic.

What constitutes a life partner is subjective anyways. If you keep two animals of the same sex that are known to engage in homosexual relationships in a cage for the rest of their lives, you could easily that they are homosexual life partners.

Also, I would love to see the claim that homosexual life partners have never happened in nature actually backed up by some research. At this point, I kind of doubt that claim.

[–]Lostfiniel 1 point2 points ago

Just to play Devil's Advocate here, Cane toads have sexual encounters with other animals, dead toads and inanimate objects.

One of the major underlying ideas behind Animal Behavior is that animals ultimately lead their lives with the goal of continuing their own line. The vast majority of behavior is towards this aim and homosexual life partners would certainly harm that goal.

Cannibalism, killing off rivals offspring, devouring sexual partners, incest and forcible "unwanted" sex happens all the time in nature too... Perspective is fickle indeed.

Your move.

So you're saying that Humans are more evolved? I don't think the dolphins and mice would appreciate you saying that.

Honestly I'm procrastinating right now but not hard enough to tease out all of the arguments made in response to this. But I basically think that homophobia undeniably makes sense if only from an evolutionary perspective. It makes a species, for lack of a better word, more efficient if the goal is reproduction. And it makes a society more uniform which leads to better group cohesiveness, which is very important if you live in a tribal setting and must band together to fight other tribes. So I find it hard to believe that humans are the only organisms that are, or have ever been homophobic creatures. I'd think nature would be rife with homophobia. May be we just haven't observed it yet, or may be its the case that these lower order creatures are actively killing them. In so much that they've done a good job of weeding out the gay genes. In this light, perhaps it is the advent of our advanced society where killing isn't allowed, that gays have had the opportunity to flourish.

But all in all, I love the gays, I've got to because they're not going anywhere and they're good people. And I believe that one day, many generations from now, either by the undirected hand of evolution or the willful hand of humans, we will fix this (homophobia, not gayness btw) and other nagging problems of human nature. Which will perhaps arrive at the same time we biologically engineer world peace, or kill ourselves trying.

Your premise that evolution favours species in which each individual is capable of reproduction is false.

Counter-example: Eusocial species such as ants and bees.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think I said that evolution favors species in which each individual is capable of reproduction, or I didn't mean to. I meant to say that this trait 'might have' been an advantage to tribal human beings. Sure you can look elsewhere in the history of evolution and point to a place where some other species did it differently because the history is so rich and the picture is so blurry. But that doesn't mean that's not how it went down someplace else.

i hate to be the one to point this out, but:

murder exists in virtually all species on earth, but justice only exists in one.

lack of existence in lesser species does not justify its absence in ours.

that said, live and let live.

[–]gifforc 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

not really.

the animals vs. humans argument is irrelevant since no animals posess the higher cognitive functions of a human and certainly have no morality issues.

Also many people confuse homophobia with simple morality. Just because someone considers homosexuality to be immoral doesn't mean they are afraid of it. Hank Hill is homophobic.

But then I suppose you all have considered every angle to this being that you are all probably 20 somethings posting shit on the internet.

[–]Frank_JWilson 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The argument is not irrelevant because it is a counter-argument against the homophobic claims that homosexuality is unnatural because it does not occur in nature.

[–]ckcornflake 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

the animals vs. humans argument is irrelevant since no animals posess the higher cognitive functions of a human and certainly have no morality issues.

It's very relevant because there are many Christians and other religious groups that falsely think that only humans can be homosexual. They use this terrible logic to show that homosexuality is unnatural, and it causes people to fear homosexuals and hate them.

Just because animals don't have a concept of morality doesn't mean that they can't be used as a counterpoint to the flawed logic of homophobic people.

[–]Saavy101 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'll admit it, i'm a homophobe. That doesn't mean i don't like homosexuals, that means i'm afraid of them. To put it more accurately, i'm afraid they'll hit on me.

Since i'm fat, i don't have to worry about that, but that doesn't mean i'm not afraid it might happen.

It's like telling someone "You're a thousand times bigger than a spider, you don't have to be afraid of it". Guess what? they still are.

However, this doesn't mean that i believe homosexuality shouldn't exist... i just don't want anything to do with it.

Also, speaking as a member of the species at the top of the food chain (until flying sharks destroy us all) I'd just like to say: to hell with what's "natural". I can't imagine something existing or not existing in "nature" informing upon a person's morality.

Did you? I never noticed animals killing some of their own species every day like we humans do.

There probably is some species that kill their baby's and similar, but that's because of necessity... Wars aren't necessary, neither is hating of homosexuals.

"Male Bottlenose Dolphins are even known to molest [rape] dolphins of different species."

"Male dolphins have been known to engage in infanticide. Dolphins will also kill porpoises for reasons which are not fully understood, as porpoises generally do not share the same fish diet as dolphins and are therefore not competitors for food supplies."

also lions will kill cubs if they get in the way of its penis entering their mother's vagina.

nah that's not the same though.
