There were complications in my female cat's operation, and they decided to keep her for a couple days to observe her. I went to visit her and her anger at me was frigging palpable. She wouldn't even acknowledge me for a few days.

Our cats were thrilled to see us again. One who had not really been very affectionate started kneeding the towel he was on and purring as loud as he could.

[–]CSec064 1 point2 points ago

Aww cats. :] this morning while I was going through my living room to leave for work this fuzzy little guy named Oswald was sitting on the edge of the coffee table both paws dangling off looking at me like "... sup?"

You know, like that was the most normal thing anyone could do.

[–]twilightmoons 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hmmm... One of mine likes to sit at the edge of the bathtub while my wife bathes. He'll just it there and try to butt heads with her, or pat her back with his paw to get her to pet him if she pretends to ignore him.

He's more of a dog than a cat in terms of his neediness for human contact. I think it's the feline equivalent of autism, except that he must have contact with us, instead of be being antisocial.

He's scared of all other people, though.

About 6 months ago, I had to take my cat to the vet and they had to drug her. When they did that, her eyes were still opened, which I wondered if she could see what was going on. After they were done with her, I held her in the front area of the vet until she started to move and then we went home. I laid down on my couch and kept her on top of me, until she started to be more aware of me and started growling. She had more movement, tried to move, and ended up hitting head first on the floor.

She then flopped around for the next few hours, staring at me like 'WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO TO ME?' The worst part was her trying to climb up onto my bed - i have a loft bed - she'd climb up the first few steps and fall down. 3 or 4 times.

If I came anywhere near her for the next 3-4 days, she'd start growling. She's fine now, but she was not happy with me at all for making her legs not work.

[–]joojie 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've seen a lot of stories about this. Veterinarians should NEVER allow an animal to go home THAT drugged up. That's disgustingly irresponsible :(

At my clinic if we thought the cat/dog/whatever wasn't ready to go home and should instead rest in a dark cage for whatever amount of time that's what happened, regardless of owner bitching. ("I have to drive all the way back??) Ya well, we're not giving you any excuse to sue us when your cat a) dies from a delayed anaesthetic reaction b) breaks/kills itself trying to climb to your loft bed or c) hates you forever (yes people try to blame us for such bullshit) Plus being responsible for either a or b morally...

Kitty on dissociatives and opioids would rather stay bundled up in a covered cage for a few hours with regular check-ins by a tech.

[–]timconradinc 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't blame the vet. It was getting close to their closing time, and I'd held my cat for about an hour and was getting uncomfortable in the waiting area. I think i'd rather her flopping around at home instead of flopping around in some cage in a dark room without anyone monitoring her. There's no way my cat would have continued to be bundled up at the point she started flopping. She hates being held, so there'd be no way to stop the flopping. The reaction I guess is a possiblity, but, hey.

[–]Patti234 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't be sorry. Your cat could have died from ovarian cancer or had kittens, perpetuating the daily senseless death and suffering of unwanted animals. Veterinary medicine is more advanced than it was even 10 years ago and the neutering process can now go much smoother for pets. My vet even has human-grade monitoring equipment to monitor the heart rate and temperature of my pets when they get neutered and they can send pets home with painkillers, which makes the healing process less traumatizing for your cat. If you've ever had wisdom teeth removed and didn't get proper pain medication, you'd understand what I mean. Neuters done cheaply will get the job done, which is very important, but pet owners do have other options (not available at all vets) to make your pets more comfortable and avoid unhappy recovery.

[–]dangfrick 52 points53 points ago

This is "Operation Catnip." It takes place a couple times a year at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. They trap 300+ feral cats and take them to be spayed or neutered, and pre-vet students get to go and help with the procedures to gain experience. The only reason I know this is because I'm a pre-vet student and recognize the picture.

[–]YogiWanKenobi 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I used to live down the street from the UF College of Veterinary Medicine. When I heard about Operation Catnip, I borrowed one of their traps and set it for a feral cat I had been feeding for six months. Later that day I picked up a highly drugged cat and pet him for the first time.

Fast forward 12 years, and now he lays in my lap. The tip of his ear never grew back either!

[–]syncsynchalt 2 points3 points ago

[–]r00x -5 points-4 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I might be biased as a cat owner, but, it just doesn't seem that humane to me.

Still, I don't pretend to understand what it is I'm seeing in this picture. Are those cats knocked out? Could you put my mind at ease?

Edit: added emphasis for the muppets who are downvoting. For fuck's sake, I'm asking a legitimate question. Oh well, I have received plenty of good answers, too!

Additional edit: I read elsewhere in the comments that these cats weren't anaesthetised, saw some which seemed to have their eyes open, and became concerned. Thanks for all the reassuring comments, chaps and chappettes, seems that other information was incorrect.

[–]ReverendDizzle 36 points37 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Look at the eyes of the cat in the upper left corner of the photo. Does that look like a cat that is lucid and aware that it is strapped down? Damn no. That cat is high as fuck. Pretty sure if the boys from r/trees were here they'd rate that little guy a solid [10].

[–]disKosaur 24 points25 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a spay/neuter program, but just in a bigger scale. But yes they'd be under anesthesia.

[–]Krazistar 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This looks very humane to me. This is exactly what people look like while under anesthesia. In fact my daughter went to the dentist the other day and they had to strap her down exactly like this!

[–]xmnstr 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They are under anesthesia. Doing that to a cat in any other situation would be insane.

[–]MPinsky 10 points11 points ago

Rescuing a shit ton of cats giving them free surgery and then finding them loving homes, those fucks.

[–]r00x 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Good perspective, but not what I was getting at. I had reason to believe they weren't anaesthetised (as it said so elsewhere in the thread - which, it seems, is wrong).

A couple looked to have their eyes open, turns out I didn't see they were glazed, so for a moment there I was panicking.

[–]Patti234 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

what's inhumane is the suffering and early death of kittens born on the street from stray cats or other peoples' cats that they put in boxes and leave to die outside.

[–]r00x 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree, but that's not what I was getting at. Seems on closer inspection that those cats are all put under anyway, rendering my concerns utterly irrelevant.

Carry on!

[–]infamous_jamie 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They're typically put out for a while with ketamine, not anesthesia in the sense of depressing heart rate/breathing. Works as a dissociative. Definitely numbs pain, creates something of a hallucinatory state which is why they don't use it on people so much anymore... Those kitties are fine :)

[–]r00x 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There are also clinics that do spaying/neutering. I took my dog to one. You drop the animals off in the morning and pick them up in the afternoon, sans balls.

I have a friend who feed ferrel cats. She catches them and has them spade, neutered, then releases them back out. Feeds and waters them. Very humanitarian thing to do IMO.

Haven Acres cats are being spayed or neutered in the style of Operation Catnip. ಠ_ಠ

[–]joojie 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, when we spay your cat we tie them to the table like that. Likewise with neutering or spaying your dog or pretty much any other dog/cat surgery except for cat neuters. Cats that are neutered most of the time aren't even hooked up to anaesthetic gas. It takes about a minute and a half to neuter a cat, so I'd say this is "spay day" at a vet college. I'm not really sure what's keeping those cats on the boards though....definitely not propofol.

[–]vrex 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They are absolutely anesthetized. Do you have any idea how much shit they would get into if they weren't publicity wise? The college would be in a financial ruin in terms of scientific funding.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not to mention how fucking awful it would sound in that room if they are all awake. How would anyone be able to concentrate on surgery?

[–]joojie 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ya, no shit they're anesthetized. I said I don't know with what. Propofol is a very short acting anaesthetic induction. Unless they're using something like Domitor, which is a longer acting sedative, but not long enough for a cat to lay there and wait it's turn quietly for a spay. Again, I do not know what else they could be using.

[–]r00x 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What do you mean, they're not anaesthetised? So they feel everything?!

No, I don't mean that at all. They are definitely anaesthetized, I just don't know with what. Apparently more than one person thinks I said "they are not anaesthetized in any way". Can someone explain where I said that?

edit: Cats that are neutered are given a deep sedative. One I've used being "BDK" a cocktail of Butorphanol, Domitor and Ketamine. (pain med, sedative and a dissosiative drug)

For us non-veterinarians:

Cats that are neutered most of the time aren't even hooked up to anaesthetic gas.

Cats that are neutered most of the time aren't even anaesthetized.

Oh, I see...that part. I was still thinking of this picture. Cats that are neutered are given a deep sedative. One I've used being "BDK" a cocktail of Butorphanol, Domitor and Ketamine. (pain med, sedative and a dissosiative drug)

joojie probably meant they aren't fully knocked out (anaesthetic gas). They probably give them a local anaesthetic and maybe some sort of mild sedative to keep them calm. Neutering is a really basic procedure. It's not nearly as invasive as spaying, so they probably don't need to be knocked out.

To give you an idea, we just picked up our new kitten the day after he was neutered. He was running around the house that same day as if he hadn't just had surgery. Meanwhile, when we got my (late) dog spayed, she wasn't really herself for a few days until she started to heal well.

Yes, that's sort of what I meant. They are fully knocked out, just not usually intubated and hooked up to the anaesthetic machine that delivers oxygen and isoflurane (and the like) There is no local anaesthetic involved. That shit stings...and into the scrotum? I'd like to live lol

You picked your cat up the day after neutering? I've never seen one kept over night, they are, for the most part, fine within a few hours, like nothing happened. The incisions are so small they aren't even sewn/glued shut.

I've only ever seen one cat neuter complication. The poor cat's balls seemed to have grown back because the scrotum swelled to almost twice the size before neutering pretty much immediately following surgery. He was bruised all over his poor little bum as well. We decided it was a reaction to one of the surgical scrubs we used to prep him. It couldn't have happened to a worse cat though....most psychotic and non-understanding owner ever. :|

the two kittens that we adopted from shelters were spayed VERY early. They were only like a few months old. The vet that did it was very into doing it at a very young age as he said they bounce very quickly, and he was right. Also, the aspect of sexual maturity never even approached them since they were spayed so early.

As to this picture, I saw right away they were being spayed as all the vets there were wearing masks as not to infect the kitties. Good for them, I'm sure they'll find great homes.
