Agreed. My wife is in ArtPrize this year. We've both had a great time with the whole experience. Spent the last day wondering all over downtown and I probably didn't experience 1/10th of what's available. If you're close enough to go see this, do it before it closes on the 9th. And if you get down in the next couple of days, vote for my wife, 46151. :) Reddit named her entry!

Also his cardboard box management is terrible. I used to work in a warehouse and the guys I worked at would do that, drove me nuts. Take two seconds to flatten the box when you open it, save yourself tons of space in the interim and reduce cleanup time!

Yeah. It even looks like his are the official Rubik's brand ones (note the little sticker in the middle of the white side). Those things run like $20 a pop retail.

I'd love to do something like this, but it would just be so expensive to get that many cubes. I found some mini, off-brand cubes that run about $3 for 4 of them, but that would still be far too expensive to create a picture of decent size / resolution.

its really not as impressive as it looks, i'm sure the computer does all the work besides actually rotating the faces on the cubes. it just spits out a move list for each cube and he does that.

I don't think you even need that. Solving for just a face isn't that difficult to do. It's just a bunch of work to do it several hundred times.

Agreed. It's projects like this that make me wonder how anyone can make money with art. It's cool to look at and stuff, but who the hell is going to buy your Rubik's art at a price above costs+labor?

Not really as difficult as it looks, assuming only one face of the cube is visible. Secondly, those colors, are stickers. He could easily peel them off and place them wherever he wants.

honest question:

why is this incredible?

the guy is clearly looking at a computer screen to tell him which colors go where.

I've seen people solve a cube blindfolded or behind their backs, or in seconds, that seems incredible.

This is something anyone with enough money to buy hundreds of cubes, and enough time to set them together could easily do.

Assembling a cube is the easy part. You only need to know a few quick algorithms for putting pieces in the correct orientation on the top. Judging by his attention, it seems he's using a program to assist him with this step. The artwork is probably computer generated, as well. As said here, the hardest part seems to be amassing that many rubiks cubes.

Yes and getting one side into any configuration is not that hard. To be honest this doesn't seem like a big deal. Just lower the resolution of any picture until you get a reasonable amount of pixels, color match to your rubics cube colors and than be a big enuf geek to solve one side of 5-6000 cubes.

I agree. Even if you had to solve the entire cube, it's really easy if you just memorize the short number of moves needed to solve one. Making a picture of the cubes just requires a lot money and time.

I could do that, but the number of cubes alone is just insane. I don't know what kind of bulk price you could find, but $5-10 is about the market price for a single cube.

I know, Solving a Rubik's cube is easy, it is a fairly straightforward process actually. Getting it into the perfect configuration and just the artistic vision needed for such a massive project, that is another thing. Who is that?

I've done it once. There are a bunch of twisting patterns to finish them off. I just went online and found them. I do know a guy who figured it all out on his own... that is something I probably wouldn't even attempt.
