Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

I grew up in Erie, Pennsylvania, and back in the days before the railroad (mid 1800's) there was a barge canal connecting Lake Erie to the Ohio River, leading to the Mississippi and to the Gulf. The canal crossed several rivers, and they built structures similar to this (albeit on a much smaller scale, crossing gaps only 150'-200') back then. They are all gone now, as are many traces of them, but it is rumored that the railroad companies hired thugs to dynamite the canal bridges to put the barge canal out of business and pave the way for their future monopoly.

Erie canal in Camillus, NY has one. (http://www.eriecanalcamillus.com/images/aqueduct/group5/aque_6141.jpg). They finished recreating it all recently and documented the whole thing:

Grew up near the C&O Canal, moved close to the Erie Canal. I think canals are cool as shit, and I wish we took more advantage of them in this country.

I think this picture actually sat in a Microsoft Word file for awhile, before being copy/pasted or screenshotted out into its own image. When you do uneven stretching on images embedded in Word, it generates relatively distinctive patterns.

Broad Street Bridge, Rochester, New York, originally built as a canal...the canal was drained and covered and it was turned into a subway, which was abandoned in the 50's...now it's just a mild mannered automobile bridge with an empty tunnel underneath.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My mind can't get around how that works.

[–]kolm 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The upper one is a huge aqueduct if you will. Except that it is not there for drinking water, but for simple and save passage of goods (it's a canal, and the river below is sometimes almost empty, so shipping is unpredictable).

[–]birdman58 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So the water in the canal is fully supported by the concrete/whatever its made of? Thats a lot of weight in water, and I wonder how often they have to do repairs/maintenance...

[–]iamrory 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was wondering the same thing. That's not a tiny ship either.

Engineering is fucking nuts.

[–]Adrestea 44 points45 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If it makes you feel any better, the ship doesn't actually make the bridge support any more weight, thanks to the displacement of water that lets it float in the first place.

[–]T_ReV 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This makes no sense. If you had a pan of water on scale and placed a boat in the water the scale would not measure any more weight on it?

[–]tom_yum 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think the water is displaced at the ends of the bridge that are over land.
The pan doesn't have any open ends for the water to go. Maybe if you start with a pan that's completely full and let the water pour out that is displaced by the boat it would be about the same.

[–]T_ReV 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah I see your point, the level of the water on the bridge would have to rise for ship to be putting weight on it.

Yes, and so are Volkswagons and Audis. So, what happens when the bridge collapses?

[–]Deathtiny 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, it would probably flood the river to a certain extent. I think the canals have gates to seal off certain sections, though.

This is what it looks like without the water (picture of another German canal that was accidentally emptied a few years ago).

[–]bracketdash 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wow. That's awesome. From the wiki:

It takes just 22.5 kilowatts (30.2 hp) to power the electric motors, which consume just 1.5 kilowatt-hours (5.4 MJ) of energy in four minutes, roughly the same as boiling eight kettles of water.

The Elbe–Havel Canal and Mittelland Canal canals had previously met near Magdeburg but on opposite sides of the Elbe, which was at a significantly lower elevation than the two canals. Ships moving between the two had to make a 12-kilometre (7.5 mi) detour, descending from the Mittelland Canal through the Rothensee boat lift into the Elbe, then sailing downstream on the river, before ascending up to the Elbe-Havel Canal through Niegripp lock. Low water levels in the Elbe often prevented fully laden canal barges from making this crossing, requiring time-consuming off-loading of cargo.[2]

Science Question:
So, if the boat is floating ontop of the water, which is ontop of the bridge, does that put any additional strain on the bridge's supports?

[–]tomwrong 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

yes, it still has weight, it's just that the boat is more buoyant in the water than it's volume would be if was water. But then it gets more complicated because the water is displaced. Hang on a second.....

On an aqueduct tip, there's an interesting lift - that lifts boats from the water below onto an aqueduct - called the Falkirk wheel.

There are a couple of those a few kilometers down the canal here where I live. I've always liked cycling down the "boardwalks", it's a pretty cool feeling.

they should transport stuff via canals more

[–]AgaveNeomexicana -1 points0 points ago

It is more of a canal bridge. There are lots of them. Canals are by far the cheapest way to move heavy bulk cargo.

Its just a canal that happens to go over a river. I don't see the big deal, I live right by the Welland canal and it Crosses over and under a lot of things. even better it happens to connect a lake that's 200 feet above another one

Just out of curiosity, what would happen would the bridge collapse? You'd have a canal flowing into a canal...

Maybe you could look it up?

[–]WildWe5 -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Do you know how much time that would waste? I could be doing a hundred better things in the time that it takes to look that up. I could be browsing reddit or commenting on some really awesome new posts. There's a hundred things, far too many too count. First, I would have to copy and paste the name of the bridge, then click on wikipedia on my bookmark toolbar. Paste it into that shit, I'm sure your familiar with the process. But still.

When I come on reddit, I expect every link to be provided so that my fat left arm doesn't have to lift its blubber to touch the keyboard. My right hand is already on the mouse, dude, so you know what, stop wasting my time, bro. Just provide the fucking link, so I can mentally process the information and then completely forget about it. Besides, has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

[–]Claypool2112 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Clearly you're doing a terrible job of browsing reddit then because numerous people have explained why

[–]drunkenmugsy -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The real question is did they have to build the bridge bigger and stronger to support that big of a boat?

[–]Squid_Tamer 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nope, it has to support the same weight all the time! The boat displaces it's own weight in water!
