Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

While the site reported 250 million monthly page views in January of 2010, that number had skyrocketed to 829 million by December of the same year. ---- When was there doubt?

what are the monthly page views for 2 or 3 years ago? All I know is this site was spread by word of mouth, or forums. The people who showed the people who showed the person who showed you the site were at one time a nicely spoken, well mannered bunch of nerds. Now there are people here that call themselves nerds to be like totally ironic. Seeing disputes of the sites popularity by the very people who destroyed the sites niche appeal makes me sick.

[–]Atario 63 points64 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's so mainstream, some show uses it as an example of something only nerds know or care about.

[–]LiamNeesonAteMyBaby 31 points32 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's so mainstream, a popular show seeks to capitalise on that fact.

[–]browncornbread 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's mainstream NERD, like say adults that play Pokemon... It's not cool or even widely known by anyone except nerds and people in the social media industry... I mean there's reddit buttons on most major sites... It's certainly mainstream but it's not facebook or anything that every knows about.

[–]LiamNeesonAteMyBaby 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's not the point. There's enough people on the planet now for the idea of 'niche' to be another stupid line of marketing. How many so-hip, underground, non-mainstream nerds do you think there are? 'Nerds' are just a convenient segment of the market, and you're a complete idiot if you think that him wearing the t-shirt is a 'shout out' or some symbol of a fictional character's solidarity with the ethos of a website. Most of what happens on Reddit these days is marketing of one form or another. This is the other side of that coin. Reddit is huge and the people here have money, so they are worth marketing to. That is what the OP is about - a mainstream television show aiming at a particular market with particular marketing imagery.

I mean, duh? Isn't this shit obvious?

[–]browncornbread 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To answer your question, no.

And frankly, the people that write that show slip in stuff like this all the time in dialogue and background. I kind of have to believe that they are legit...shoot dude listen to the commentary tracks....not only is it fitting for that character to wear that shirt but it's fitting that the writers would slip it in because they are the type of people that frequent this site

ALSO... the majority of the shows audience isn't people that would get the reference. Something tells me you've never seen the show. I think you might change your tune if you did.

[–]lifeis 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, thank God he wore that shirt, people will finally watch that show.

[–]SaturdaysKids 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What do you define as a "nerd"? Someone who has the Internet?

[–]erasethenoise 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This would be one of my ex girlfriends definitions, yes.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I won't doubt it when people know what I'm talking about when I call myself a redditor.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I remember having to explain what a 'blogger' was back in 03 and 04. That was frustrating. Nobody wanted to read my page because 'once you read a website, why would you go read it again?'

Explaining reddit to people brings back those glory days....

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I used to be a /b/tard, that was difficult to explain if I ever tried. When I realized that's not how it worked, I said fuck it and switched to reddit. Same thing happens though.

Every single mention of this show, and hoards of people somehow feel the need to explain why they don't like it.. in excruciating detail.

[–]picklemerchant 188 points189 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A lot of people here think that somehow the show is trying to pander to them. So therefor it's falling short on not always being technically correct or authentically geeky. It isn't. It's a mainstream sitcom. Enjoy it, or not.

[–]Calpa 98 points99 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And being insulted by having the stereotypical 'nerd' becoming someone that has frequent sexual partners, a well paying job (seeing how they live) and an interesting social life.. there are worse things to be insulted by.

I mean, like 90210 was an accurate representation of life in Beverly Hills; or as if 24 gives an accurate depiction of how major American government agencies work; or how every American hospital looks like Princeton-Plainsboro or Sacred-Heart Hospital..

They'll often mention The IT Crowd as a better show too which is funny as hell because The IT Crowd is even more faux-geeky/sitcom-y than The Big Bang Theory (full disclosure: I'm a big fan of both shows).

[–]Deddan 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

True, but The IT Crowd is meant to be a little surreal, and thus prone to over-exaggerations. I think that's why it gets away with it more.

[–]effwgwrg 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"faux-geeky" and "not realistic" are not the same thing.

[–]brrose 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

IT crowd doesn't throw a pop culture reference in your face every two seconds.

The writers of Big Bang Theory, for some reason, feels the need to have every character validate their nerd street-cred with every single line they speak.

[–]The_Comma_Splicer 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sounds like Reddit.

[–]mindbleach 33 points34 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The IT Crowd is faux-geeky with geeks in mind, though. It doesn't need PhDs double-checking every script because the writers don't get in beyond their depth. It's more sitcom-y because it's by Graham Linehan, whose guiding philosophy is "no hugging, no learning." He takes these exaggerated characters - broken people to a one - and puts them in ridiculous situations of their own creation. None of the crap they go through would happen if they were balanced and sensible individuals. Big Bang Theory is just "LOL nerds amirite" with some soap opera subplots and the common decency to care more about the science-y window dressing than CSI.

[–]flawlesslylogical 3 points4 points ago

[–]sibtiger 45 points46 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Is there really a significant difference, to me, between a canned laugh track and one that is acquired from sitting a bunch of people down, recording their laughter at the episode and editing it in? It's still a "laugh track" because it is a separate audio track exclusively for disembodied laughter.

And even if it is an audience recording, it doesn't change how annoying it is when those people fucking kill themselves laughing every time Sheldon opens his god damn mouth.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My parents watch this show, along with every other sitcom on cbs, things usually go like this.

Sheldon says something, then says something science-y

People on screen laugh

My parents laugh on cue.

Seriously, i cannot stand this show.

[–]gizza 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The end result is still the same though. Hell they even edit the audience laughter if it is too loud, or one guy laughs to weird or the audience laughs for too long etc. It's basically a laugh track that was just recorded the day of the filming.

[–]mcanerin 1 point2 points ago

I've said it before and I'll say it again: If you can get over the occasional dumbing down of things this is actually a pretty funny show. I used to hate on it as well but once I finally watched a few episodes I actually started to like it.

[–]CySU 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I also don't think it's that bad, and actually has some very funny moments ... but yeah, don't expect it to have the verbal wit of a 30 Rock type show. As a classic sitcom, it does very, very well, and I appreciate that many of the references are actually pretty well fact-checked.

All the nerds out there butt hurt about this show feel misrepresented as to how they live their hidden lives, and unfortunately that minority has a fairly large voice on the internet.

However, if you don't like this show because it's formulaic, then I don't hold any grudges against you. It's just not your kind of show. Move on.

I don't watch the show but there is a billboard near my house that says "Bang five night a week" with that guy on it. I think that is a little funny.

[–]gogog0 8 points9 points ago

The best way I've heard the IT crowd and BBT differentiated: With the IT Crowd you're laughing WITH the characters, with BBT you're laughing AT them.

No one wants to watch a show with the main character sitting at his computer for 29 minutes an episode

[–]coadyj 14 points15 points ago

Things I have done that characters in the big bang have done

  1. Changed the hard drive in my tivo (in order to save bsg)
  2. Created an iPhone app
  3. Used an X10 to turn on a lamp.
  4. Had complex discussions about the paradox of the terminator franchise
  5. Been quite concerned about transporter technology and the existence of the sole
  6. Played 3 dimensional chess

the list goes on.

It's a great show, and sure maybe the Sheldon character is a little exaggerated but so what, that is the premise of the show. I don't watch scrubs and assume all hospitals are like sacred heart or watch Oz and assume all prisons are like that.

I am about Leonard smart and enjoy the show very much, also my friend who is Sheldon smart also finds it hilarious. I think stupid people miss a lot of the jokes on the show because they are above their head and for most people what they say just sounds like scientific mumbo jumbo.

[–]Silkenroe 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

the thing with Sheldon is that he's as close as cable TV will make fun of people with asbergers with out actually calling him out.

[–]DocBrown1984 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Watch Boston Legal some time. There is a guy on there who actually has aspergers, and they make fun of him all the time. Different network though I suppose.

And Jim Parsons gets letters from teachers and parents thanking him for his portrayal of Sheldon all the time. It's never overtly stated, or even implied that he has it. He's a person first, and that's how people on the show see him, not the disease.

[–]bonafide10 1 point2 points ago

No. My wife and I LOVE the show. The problem with nerds/redditors is that they hate enjoying anything that is mainstream. I'm not very smart myself (although I am smarter than average), but my wife is Chemical Engineer and she loves the show more than I do.

Hipsters all of you.

"It was only good for the first few episodes." "It used to be good before it was mainstream."

If you don't like it, don't watch it.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't see why acknowledging that most sitcoms deteriorate as the characters become caricatures of themselves and the writers run out of ideas or get replaced by less talented individuals makes anyone a 'hipster'.

If sitcoms never deteriorated, they'd never get cancelled.

[–]myrpou 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hipster or not, many things do turn shit when they become mainstream, when they conform in order to build up a wider audience.

Since everyone in this thread, and the rest of the world still doesn't get it I'll correct you one more time:

CHUCK LORRE SHOWS LIKE TBBT AND 2.5 MEN DO NOT USE A LAUGH TRACK http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100323155123AAZMBnr

and

To those asking "what episode/s should I watch"?

The answer is watch it from the fucking start like you are supposed to

Do you just read random chapters out of a book? NO. Start at the fucking beginning.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The answer is watch it from the fucking start like you are supposed to

Do you just read random chapters out of a book? NO. Start at the fucking beginning.

Almost all books are meant to be read cover to cover, thats why books like Hodgman's The Area Of My Expertise explicitly tell the reader to jump around in the preface. Most TV shows are designed to possible to picked up at any episode, so they can attract more viewers who didn't start from the beginning. Do you have a forced two-minute wait between chapters of a book where you randomly grab a different book out of a bag and flip to the middle of it?

Television serials do exist, and people know that, in that case the correct answer to "What episode should I watch?" isn't to be a dick, it is: "this is one you have to start from the beginning". But the big bang theory is an episodic sitcom, so just name your favorite episode. Or if you think "Self loathing nerd, over the top nerd, scared of women nerd, womanizing nerd, and girl next door" is too hard to pick up on, or that the plot arcs don't have enough exposition in the episodes they are relevant to (they do), then just say to watch the pilot.
