Could be worse. At least it's not /r/politics.

Someone doesn't know how Google works.

Those menus are not "put up," chosen, or under reddit's control. They are algorithmicly generated by Google.

It's up there because a whole lot of people go there.

Someone doesn't know how Google webmaster tools work. You can demote links you do not wish to have shown as the under-links for a url.

So actually, it's under reddit's control if they want to change it.

Hate to break it to you, but someone does.

Have you personally ever tried demoting links for a major site? Clearly not.

It doesn't work. Google equivocates about these being "strong suggestions" towards how Site Links are ranked, but in the real world it doesn't actually do anything.

Plus, even if it did work your demotions are only valid for three months. Reddit would have to go back over and over again.

Those are the top links as chosen by redditors, need to live with that.

Ok so, the SiteLinks link for somebody.

Its true, these are algorithmic constructions based on what people search for. They're only generated if people search for "reddit" then re-search later for "reddit X" (in this case "reddit jailbait"). Google views this as people's search not being specific enough for just "reddit" and so tries to give you the top options.

This likely means jailbait is among the top subreddit searched for on google. So to permanently remove it, we'd have to get rid of the subreddit. Or change the subreddit's robots tag to noindex, then request all the pages in it be removed (They do do this). But that would prevent any of the links from showing up in Google.

We can demote it but you need to go back to the SiteLinks page every 90 days to reconfirm the list. And its not 100% guarenteed (I suspect it simply adds a very large negative towards its score - one that can be overridden by sufficient traffic).

Funny story - my company once asked me if I could "set up site links" for my company. They were quite insistent on it, even when I told them it was impossible - that they'd have to improve their SEO characteristics before that would happen and even then it depends on search patterns.

Just to be clear, frequently searched on Google is not at all the same thing as what the OP was saying -- he was asserting that the ranking was influenced by the visitor's search history, which is not the case.

Well the links are actually not 'chosen by redditors' but in reality an effect of jailbait being a powerful 'general keyword'. I doubt /jailbait is a top-5 subreddit as far as subscribers or visits.

I also had no idea how badly the demotion process works.

You act as if you "are" reddit.

Reddit is made up of everyone and evidently the majority of redditors prefer /r/jailbait over most other subreddits. Thus, it is an accurate representation of reddit.

Also. Dat ass.

That section shows the most popular parts of the website. r/Jailbait is obviously very popular and thus appears there.

Look - reddit is paying damn good money to have that listed there!

Oh wait, they're not. Those are Google's rankings based on traffic. Sadly, those listings represent a LOT of reddit's traffic.

[–]ifatree 2 points3 points ago

you know the ID check is a "yes/no" selector, right? you only assume they're grown adults b/c that fits your tastes better. attention whoring knows no age boundaries.
