Yes. This happens to my headset all the time. It will happen twice as often during a raid when I desperately need to say something but the headset is so tangled up I can only hold it near my knees and shout.

Get split loom wire sheathing, the 1/2in stuff works well, 3/4 is better. Now, encase the wire in the sheathing. Instead of being run over, the wheel will just push the sheathing out of the way. There is not enough friction between the two plastics to allow the wheel to pull the encased wire under. Now you have a safe wire that wont get tangled or chewed up. Here is an example of the split loom. Almost all hardware stores have the stuff.

Wont work well if you are dealing with a long cable and you need to roll around. My old Razer headset had about a 10ft cable on it with a DVI style plug on the end, and I routed the cable into my chair so it would be out of the way. I also built a headset holder under the right armrest of my chair with the cable for the headset coming out there. This allowed me to roll from my computer to the other side of the desk where I kept books/papers/ect. I tried using a piece of string, a weight, and a pulley to auto-retract the cable, sort of like at gas pumps, but that would just jam up. Since I had split loom kicking around, I tried that, and it worked quite well. I could roll around and not worry about the cable.

Oh, I forgot I replied to something. Hi! I solved the problem by getting a Logitech G930 wireless headset. Bit expensive but I fucking love it, range is around 30-40 feet depending on the thickness of your walls and doors.

I rolled over and crushed the volume controller on my nice Turtle Beach headset that way. Not sure why the volume control has to be like 6 feet from either end of the cable.

The main problem is that headset wires (the main culprit in this type of entanglement) are TOO DAMN LONG.

They can't help but trail on the floor and god forbid you try to tuck them away because those sneaky little bastards will be wrapped around your feet the next time you get up without fail and ALL your shit WILL get pulled off your desk.

If by too heavy you mean they should be smaller... well... really the bigger a wire is the more can go through at the same time, and that's not some "Monster Cable" bullshit...

Higher quality headsets will not have the light shitty earphone wires you get with the shitty ear plug free earphones you get when buying an mp3 player.

Generally the heavier and bigger the wire the better it will sound and the longer the wire can be without any noticeable loss of quality.
