At the college that I go to, they started a program where people who have little money can get free dress clothes for an interview. I think it's a pretty cool idea.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

At the school I went to we were required to get jobs. This meant getting placed all over the world if you had to. The Student Advisers had a budget which included buying clothes and flight/car/train/boat arrangements etc. It wasn't a lot and most of the time you had to foot 80% the cost but it was a nice boost if you were at square one to get a job.

[–]toast_recon 34 points35 points ago*

Yup. Give it to them free when they don't have the means so they feel indebted to you when they get the job and DO have the means. Most of the costs in drycleaning are overhead, so any additional customers they get are probably 90%+ profit.

Edit: Grammars

Also, charitable branding. A dry cleaner is a dry cleaner is a dry cleaner. Might as well go to the one that is ostensibly doing good things.

Seriously. What the FUCK guys? Its called mutual benefit, not deceptive marketing. Just because it ends up working out for everyone people can't just accept acts of good will.

First of all it's impossible to know what effect this will have. Second of all if you could measure it (maybe) you would not know how much the increase in sales was due to paid customers who appreciate supporting a good cause. Brand perception via word of mouth can be worth a lot. Lastly who gives a fuck? If they can't afford to keep offering it then they will stop.

It's in Portland. It's the dry cleaners on Glisan (I think, maybe Hoyt?) in the Pearl. I've had clothes dry-cleaned there a half-dozen times or so. I've never had the occasion to use their free offer, but I think it's really cool that they do this.

That being said, I'm not sure "Portland" is always what people think of when they think "America." We're not "real Americans" after all, I guess.

Exactly. The critical thing to remember when faced with a positive/negative story is:

  • If it's good, try as hard as possible to not give Americans credit by generalizing to humanity or deflect the credit to another Reddit Approved™ country (surely one of people involved must have Norwegian ancestry?)

  • If it's bad, shoehorn and use red herrings to their fullest extend so you can restrict the blame solely on Americans (for example, there is probably a McDonalds nearby - bam, that's your in. America's fault).

One thing I've noticed, for as much as some people in our country hate immigrants, such as those whom probably own this dry cleaning business--they are the ones who never forgot America, and are in fact what America was all about. They are the ones who believe in second chances, in being kind to strangers, and in opportunity--and in returning the helping hands that once helped them. I wish more people in our country could be like these good folks--we wouldn't be where we are today.

[–]gistak 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You assume that they're immigrants because they own a dry cleaners? Is this based on some stat?

People who hate immigrants are idiotic. People who have a problem with ILLEGAL immigration are less idiotic, but sometimes do froth at the mouth a bit much.

[–]mkvgtired 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think America is the most welcoming place for immigrants just judging by the general perceptions. As you mentioned they are usually the ones that have their eye on the American dream. The vast majority of immigrants I know are extremely successful (several are mid 20s millionaires).

I got downvoted when I mentioned this before, but from my experience it isnt confederate flag waving rednecks, but immigrants that are the most pro-American people I've ever met.

Immigrants are the best gift we can get from another country IMHO.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A message lost on most people. Like the response in another place in this thread "How do they verify you are unemployed" - you don't - they don't have to verify because they aren't obligated to do it, no bureaucracy, no BS, just helping out someone and getting good reputation in the local community.

[–]Mr_Tulip 4 points5 points ago

But that's not who the above post is making fun of. There's people who can articulate what the dislike about socialism, and then there's the kneejerk, "everyone who disagrees with me is an evil godless socialist" types. The above post is making fun of the latter.

In order for a joke to be valid or funny it has to make sense. This was a clear attempt at satire to expose conservative views as heartless, when this picture is in no way incompatable with capitalism, in fact, it is a good example of it done right.

Exactly. People are too eager to give America and its people a bad name.

The niceness of one business does not constitute an entire country.

[–]gistak 1 point2 points ago

Nor did he say that it does. In fact, by saying that it's the America he loves, he strongly implied that there are parts that he doesn't love.

But thanks.

Why America? It's people, has nothing to do with a country. People all over the world including America are nice. Maybe you mean that because the US is so capitalistic that it is rare that you see something like that?

[–]Incalite 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's the America you can only experience by supporting small businesses, too. So buy local -- people like these deserve your money far more than Wal-Mart does, plus you're helping your community.

As a third Portlander, I can triple confirm this. It would be useful not to vote up the disinfo about it being in London.

how would they know if they are unemployed or need an outfit for an interview?

[–]MakinBacon 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

they don't. they believe that they will see a Return On Investment when the person patronizes the store after they acquire a job.

[–]InnocuousPenis 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh yes, store, you're doing a super good job. Aren't you such a good store?

[–]CapOnFoam 3 points4 points ago

I don't know why you're getting downvotes. That was pretty funny. :)

[–]cannonball1895 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think they'd seek proof. Does it really cost the dry cleaner that much to clean one outfit? I wouldn't think so, and if the person ended up getting a job, then I imagine they'd speak very favorably of the dry cleaner and maybe use their services in the future.

Regardless, it's just a really nice thing to do that probably only helps their business.

[–]terror406 0 points1 point ago

In the country I love, unemployed people don't need that kind of charity.

(Just to clarify: that country exists. In fact, this probably goes for most western countries that are not America.)

[–]gistak 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because they're on the dole? So they do get the charity, but by forcing everyone else to pay for it. Is that what you mean, or something else?

Incidentally, I've known people on the dole, and they'd have LOVED to have free dry cleaning, because the dole isn't actually that much money.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

At first I thought it meant "come in and clean your outfit yourself as your interview to work here"

I like how countries differ in wearing suits.

In Japan I have to wear a suit always In America I wore a suit during my interview, but never after In Holland I wore a pair of nice jeans, a nice shirt and a hip blazer to my job interview, for a 120K a year consulting job at the largest consulting firm they have there, got hired as well.

If you're not gonna wear a suit during your daily job, don't wear one during your interview, it's stupid.
