Sometimes, but when you're diving they're generally playful and curious. They can get more aggressively playful and curious, which can be unsettling. Unless there was a male involved, I personally have never known someone who was injured by a female sea lion. They will definitely steal your fish though.

This was in Monterrey, CA. It was a female, she was pissed off (though I don't think it was at me) and, let me assure you, I know an aggressive animal when it's trying to bite me.

I was leaning over the Do Not Cross yellow tape to get a picture when she woke up and started barking at me. Then she got up and came at me. I jumped back, thinking she would stop at the Do No Cross yellow tape. Which is where I learned that sea lions can't read.

They may be playful in the water, but apparently that behavior on land is not unheard of. And my years growing up watching National Geographic left me totally unprepared for that facet of sea lion behavior.

You can swim with them in "isla espiritu santo" in baja california, Mexico ( I have done it ) and at least there they are.quite friendly.

at least i got my revenge one day. after this one seal had been harassing everyone on the pier i managed to drop my line (with a fairly heavy weight) right on its head, no more seals the rest of the day.
