See that picture of the reddit alien at the top left? That's an homage to Russell's Teapot.

That's a mighty big claim to say Gervais is the athiest. I would bet Dawkins is athier than Gervais.

Some of us are just athi. Others are athier. But the best, they are the athiEST!

Please tell me you're spelling it wrong on purpose.

The OP misspelled atheist. Now I get it.

What? Ricky Gervais is a self-proclaimed atheist. I can't think of a single comedy special he has done where he doesn't mention it like 100 times. He is very obviously an atheist.

Agreed. He is obviously an atheist. Not as obviously an athiest.

OP spelled atheist wrong, and I'm being a dick about it.

Don't worry, you made me laugh. Someone else has an equally stupid sense of humour.

I actually felt bad after I posted that (I'm not usually a spelling nazi, but come on, you're misspelling a label you use to identify yourself) so I came up with some mnemonics to help keep others from repeating one of my pet peeves.

Yes, this makes sense.

Athiest.

Sorry, just checking to see if Firefox highlights that as a spelling error. It does. So there's really no excuse for making the mistake. It's atheist.

Actually the burden on proof is on those who are asserting the claim, I don't know why he thinks otherwise.

[–]asymptomatic 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's what he means. What do you mean? You can't prove a negative. You can't prove anything doesn't exist. It's impossible. Therefore the burden of proof lies with those making the claim that there is a god.

[–]jbot84 0 points1 point ago

I mean the burden of proof is on those who claim there is a god, or an invisible gay dragon, or leprechauns.....I just didn't understand why he said, "it annoys me that the burden of proof is on us" because it isn't.

Per Reddiquette

[don't] Submit an image that's just text. You can submit a self post with the same message.

It makes screen readers useless for the blind, and prevents copy-and-pasting. Of course, it doesn't gain karma doing a self-post, but karma is just a number. For those who need actual text:

It annoys me that the burden of proof is on us. It should be: "You came up with the idea. Why do you believe it?" I could tell you I've got superpowers, but you can't go up to people saying "Prove I can't fly." They'd go: "What do you mean 'Prove you can't fly'? Prove you can!"

The burden of proof is on whomever feels the need to convince somebody else, be you atheist, theist or agnostic. Atheism is also a belief, and if you initiate a conversation, your atheism being the topic, you can't expect the other person to take the burden of proof. I would agree that the theist community as a whole should bear the burden of proof, as they are trying to positively affirm that something does exist and this claim would require evidence.

In casual conversation or a debate, however, it is really on both parties. Certainly there must be good reasons to be an atheist, and the atheist ought to defend these reasons just as the theist should defend his, not shirk off his responsibility to intellectual integrity and force all of the explaining onto somebody else. Philosophy is about finding the truth through debate, not finding underhanded ways of making your opponents position harder to argue.

If you are bold enough to make far reaching claims about topics which people are hardly capable of truly knowing anything about, like what lies beyond our universe and it's nature and construction, then you better come to the table with some logical justifications. Any claim about what does or doesn't exist beyond nature is a loaded one, and should require reasons.

Atheism is not a belief, it's based on fact. If the facts change, nothing changes still.

[–]vth0mas 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Atheism is the belief that deities don't exist. It is a belief, irregardless of it being based in fact or not.

Merely a semantic difference. Whether you say that you do believe that gods don't exist or you don't believe that gods do exist you are saying the exact same thing.

An atheist believes that atheism is true. An atheist believes that theism and agnosticism is false. An atheist believes that it is the case that no gods exist.

This type of statement fascinates me. Not because it has any philosophical significance (it can be quickly pushed aside) but because it has personal significance. It's an attempt to blur the atheist's stance in order to make his position harder to attack. If he somehow doesn't believe in anything then you are unable to say what he believes is false.

Conveniently, however, atheists like to use this little thing called logic (or so they say, just like most people), and in accordance with logic when we symbolize the two sentences we find that they are analytically equivalent.

If we take "X" to mean "god exists", and we wanted to say either "it is the case god doesn't exist" or "it isn't the case that god does exist" we would style symbolize the sentence as ~X. This is knowledge taught in Philosophy 101 (I'm not saying this as an insult, but literally, this is one of the first things a philosopher learns).

This type of argument is really a great big straw man for any atheist arguing his position. All beliefs aside, the atmosphere of the God debate has become increasingly philosophically bankrupt on both sides, petty semantics such as this being the example.

While I actually agree with what you're saying in both of your responses, it is abundantly clear to me that you either did not read or are incapable of comprehending my posts, as your responses don't even relate to what I'm talking about. This being said, I think our conversation should end here.

It's been nice having what I have to say ignored for the self-important, previously prepared responses floating through your mind. We should do it again sometime.

Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven. All you need to do is accept in your heart that he has saved you from your sins. Nothing else. It is that simple.
