Did you see him get a KO while he was on his back? Dude's fucking insane

[–]readforit 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There were two. 5 years ago he was on his back with Okami pummeling him and he kicked him in the face while being on his back, knocking Okami out. It was ruled illegal but the best move ever.

He also choked out (forgot his name) seconds before the end of round 5 after getting pummeled for 5 rounds

[–]Antiwar247 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]EasyReader 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't follow fighting, so perhaps this is a stupid question, but why was the kick illegal?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The kick was illegal because Okami was a "grounded opponent" even though he was in the dominant position. Seeing as he had more than just his feet on the mat all kicks and knees to the head are illegal. this rule is to rule out pride style soccer kicks and stomps.

[–]UglieJosh 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Many promotions don't allow kicks or knees to a 'downed opponent', basically meaning an opponent not standing on his feet. In UFC kicks to a downed opponent are legal but I believe knees are not, but this was not one of his UFC fights and i assume downed kicks are illegal in this promotion.

I could be wrong.

[–]hcter 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To clarify: kicks and knees to a grounded opponent are legal, except to the head.

[–]cookedsushi 3 points4 points ago

Important to note that it was a doped-up Chael Sonnen who was pummeling Silva before getting triangled for the ba-zillionth time in his career. Still looking forward to the rematch, though.

[–]Plutoid 2 points3 points ago

No, actually. It was a triangle armbar.

[–]Nunchuckery 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There was also the Travis Lutter fight where he landed an upkick and Lutter fell into Silva's triangle in the second round and ended up taping to elbows.

[–]Plutoid 1 point2 points ago

Ordinarily I'd have something to say about a comparison with Ali. It's pretty apt here.

[–]stigochris 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You have to remember Silva is doing this against MMAers not boxers. Guys like Forest Griffin and Okami are slow as molasses when compared even to a middle of the road pro broxer. However what Silva does in mma is incredibly impressive, but to call him the Ali of our generation is quite a stretch.

[–]WinterIsCumming -2 points-1 points ago

I stopped watching MMA a while ago, but this guy is so amazing and he does it often, not only a couple times.

[–]thefreshscent 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why did you stop watching? I have been watching since Tito Ortiz was the LHW Champion, and the UFC gets more entertaining every year. There are so many skilled fighters nowadays.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There is something that makes everyone like a certain thing. I'm 20 and I started watching the week Royce Gracie came back to fight matt hughes. They replayed all of his first fights in the UFC and every single time I guessed wrong (the bigger guy). This made me go back and rewatch nearly every single UFC and Pride fight. I hadn't missed a single event from then on up until 4-5 months ago. I didn't have many people to talk to about it; everyone in highschool liked football and very few liked MMA. So, I went to sherdog (later bloodyelbow) + fightfinder made me a (IMO) expert in the field. I later realized I kept seeing less and less beautiful subs off the back and more decisions + wrasslers lay and praying. Made me not like it. I <3 BJJ and after I fix my knee plan on going back for a blue.

[–]thefreshscent 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, wrestler's can make boring fights (Anthony Johnson vs Dan Hardy, All of GSP's recent fights, etc), but I couldn't stop watching ALL mma because of this. If BJJ/submission wins are what you are looking for, just look for the right fights. Any fight with guys like Jacare or Damian Maia fighting guys with weak takedown defense will usually end in a submission.

[–]BWCsemaJ 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am just waiting for the day when Dana White matches him up with Jon Jones. Maybe they'll meet at 190 or something. It will happen though, mark my words!

[–]Disasstah 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No way in hell Jones can make 190. He's already having a hard time getting down to 205.

[–]HughManatee 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah...I suppose. He's like 6'4", isn't he? He looks like a natural 225 or 230, so I'm assuming he cuts a bunch of weight to get to 205.

[–]Disasstah 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, there's been a lot of talk about how he's going to have trouble staying at LHW with his size. This is mostly because he's still growing apparently.

[–]muayguy 0 points1 point ago

[–]sdpr 5 points6 points ago

Just going to say that would be one boring ass match.

GSP would probably just roll on top of him for as long as possible. Such a boring fighter.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Boring, but unstoppable.

[–]51tanker 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

won't. dana is too protective of jones, and the ufc will never go ahead with a fight in between weight classes. that's the reason gsp vs silva hasn't happened yet (gsp doesn't want to move up, silva refuses to move down).

also, while jones is more creative in the octagon, silva is faster, more well-rounded, and a far more experienced fighter.

[–]StackOfFiveMarmots 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Too protective of Jones? The guy is set for his first defense tomorrow. Don't you think its a bit early for such a statement? I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the matter though.

[–]51tanker 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

he's not taking on evans. they've trained together, evans knows jones' timing, his habits. evans is also a stronger puncher, is less creative but more straightforward. dana knows that if evans and jones step in the ring, the smart bet is on evans. from a business standpoint, with the popularity of jones as the youngest-ever champion? it makes sense to keep him there. i can't see jones taking on a threat like evans, at least for a few more fights. unless rampage surprises everyone tonight.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How do you feel now?

[–]51tanker 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

the same. i'll have a similar opinion until i see jones take on evans. depending on who walks away the champ from that fight, i'll either be justified or very impressed.

[–]Lineage_tw -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

People like to match Silva up with everyone, but so far Forrest Griffin has been the highest ranked non-middleweight that he's fought in a long time.

Griffin was, however, very very highly ranked at the time.

[–]WinterIsCumming 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Griffin essentially went in with the worst gameplan of all time and tried to give the fans a show by chasing Silva.

[–]youthandasia 1 point2 points ago

[–]Lineage_tw 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not saying Griffin fought well. I like the guy, but it was a terrible fight.

He was, however, very highly ranked in the LHW division.

[–]obscure123456789 -3 points-2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If they do match up that won't be necessary for Jones to lose extra weight.

Silvas walking around weight is 220, he cuts the weight so he can fight smaller guys than him.

Which makes him a bit of a fraud if you think about it.

[–]pzycho 11 points12 points ago

[–]Lineage_tw 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Rich is a great fighter who unfortunatley gets beaten a lot. He has tons of heart, and maybe not so much good sense. All of his losses are to championship contenders, most of whom are way way bigger than he is. This makes his jump to LHW seem absolutely senseless.
