Yes I do, and I'm in therapy and on medication for it because otherwise I'm mostly confined to my room and unable to interact with people. I used to wash my hands so much that they would start to bleed. Only a few days ago, after three years, have I been able to pet my own dog and not have to immediately wash my hands afterwards.

OCD is a mental disorder. You are Obsessed with certain things and Compulsions are used to make that Obsession stop (except it makes the obsession worse and not better).

If you become Obsessed with being clean you may at first just wash your hands a few more times a day than normal. And then because that only reinforced the anxiety and does not diminish it, you wash your hands more often. Then you need to change your clothes several times a day, not allow anyone to make or touch your food, hide in your room away from people because being in the same room is 'close enough' that you feel dirty.

It is like poison is lacing your whole body and everyone else in the world tells you that it isn't there, but trying to wash it off makes it more potent.

There are days I would rather go hungry than leave my room to make something to eat, or be unable to use the restroom because someone had just used it- and feeling like I would piss myself was preferable to feeling as if I were tainted.

Now from what I understand things being out of order are more along the lines of OCPD- these are Obsessions without the physical Compulsions. You may not need to do anything, but you may have to ask someone a question, may feel uneasy about things being out of order, but you may not feel that the very world will end. Or perhaps you may, in which-case you would have to switch it around, not allow anyone else to touch it in-case they messed it up, and likely not be able to eat it yourself because you may mess it up.

OCPD has nothing to do with whether or not you have compulsions – OCPD is the specific obsession with neatness or order, but the defining characteristic that separates it from OCD is that sufferers of OCPD believe that their compulsions or obsessions are correct, where OCD sufferers typically have unwanted thoughts.

[–]Faustyna 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ah, well thank you. I was not aware of the differences. Though while I do suffer unwanted thoughts, I do also technically believe a few of them are correct. I will have to look into the difference some more.

tl;dr - OP is a dickhead and OCD isn't funny.

[–]ShanduCanDo 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, like the OP, I also am clinically diagnosed with OCD and I find this funny (although the picture is driving me crazy).

BUT – and this is important – there are varying degrees of severity with OCD. I don't have OCD as badly as Faustyna (although I do wash my hands frequently enough that they'll bleed if I don't use lotion). So I feel bad for Faustyna, but please don't get on a high horse like you're some kind of OCD expert or like Faustyna needs some kind of muscle to enforce his / her personal distate for particular jokes.

[–]Faustyna 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I do understand there are varying degrees. And I do have smaller Obsessions that cause more annoyance than actual issue. But jokes seem to downplay that it is can be a serious disorder and unlike in the case of a heart-attack, people presume it's small and amusing like the jokes first.

And I'm a woman.

[–]ShanduCanDo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I completely understand where you're coming from, but I'm not sure I agree that joking about it downplays the seriousness. I mean, shit, Michael J. Fox jokes about Parkinson's all the time and it's always on Reddit, and I don't think you'd disagree with me if I said that's a much more serious condition.

Or for a more appropriate example, the TV show Monk very frequently portrayed his OCD as something comedic, but then it also portrayed the seriousness of the condition at other times. I think, like most TV shows, it tended to oversimplify the disorder (playing it like TV amnesia where it's caused by a single traumatic event and fixed when the character "comes to peace" with the event), but I think it's still a good example that comedy doesn't mean you're necessarily being dismissive.

I guess my point is, I don't really see an element of causation here – I'm not sure that joking about OCD makes people treat it less seriously. I completely agree that it's a very misunderstood disease, but I think the cure for that is to educate people about it rather than refusing to joke about it. It seems to me that even if everybody agreed to stop making OCD jokes, it would still be completely misunderstood.

[–]Faustyna 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The problem seems to be that both of those things are happening- lots of misinformed jokes, and no one mentioning the real disorder. I'm not against the jokes, in fact in my first post I don't believe I wrote "not to joke about it" but wished to define it as more complex than "the cookies are out of order."

People realize that Parkinson's is an illness first, and something to joke about second. Mental/emotional issues, since you don't often see physical manifestations of them, seem to be jokes first- PMS, depression, OCD, ADHD- all taken lightly first, or at least less seriously than a broken bone. While you may joke about the time you busted an arm, you'll make the jokes in a cast after it's alright.

If you have depression or OCD... people may mention you're crazy, put the pencils out of order, tell you to 'just stop being sad' - and won't offer the name of a therapist.

Or maybe I just know a lot of misinformed people and my information's wrong.

Thank you ShanduCanDo, finally someone who can laugh at the joke. Ergo why I posted it under /r/funny.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The problem is that people are using the term OCD for things that are not OCD. Therefore people who actually have OCD have their condition downplayed by their peers because they think that they just like to be organized.

Sounds like EDD to me, Excessive Diagnosis Disorder.

[–]Faustyna 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

While I do understand this can be amusing, and I used to find OCD jokes funny, when it's basically wrecked my life downplaying it does no good. People are used to the jokes, not the actual condition, so it's amusing when you mention having OCD. They shift pencils out of order, or present you with a bag of mixed candies thinking you'll amusingly take the time and sort them.

OCD != anal retentive

[–]ShanduCanDo 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As somebody who has been clinically diagnosed with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, I can pretty confidently state that what you call "anal-retentiveness" is a defining characteristic of the disorder.

OCD is characterized by intrusive or unwanted thoughts that cause anxiety, which can also cause compulsive behaviors to "correct" the idea.

So when you look at this picture, you might be slightly annoyed or think it's funny that the one cookie is a bit askew, then you'll move on and forget all about it.

When I look at the picture, it drives me crazy. I'm compelled to try to fix it, but I can't, so it might manifest itself as a different compulsion (personally I had to use hand sanitizer a few times after looking at it – hand-washing is a pretty common compulsion). I'll probably stop thinking about it after a while, but it might take half an hour or so. If I happened to catch a glance at the same bag of cookies sitting on a co-worker's desk, I would probably catch myself consciously thinking about a few times throughout the entire day.

Also, just so you know, "anal retentive" isn't really a thing. It's a weird term that a few psychoanalysts like Freud used because they had an obsession with the way kids pooped, but it's largely fallen out of favor in the mental health community and nobody really takes it seriously any more. I have a feeling that your idea of an "anal retentive" person probably *would( actually qualify as obsessive-compulsive.

[–]Snurf_Turf 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're assuming that OCD always occurs alongside obsessive-compulsive personality disorder; this isn't the case. I have OCD and although I'm also like that, it's not a universal characteristic of everyone with the disorder.

[–]ShanduCanDo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, I'm not – OCPD is just characterized by the belief that your compulsions are correct. They still both involve obsessions and / or compulsions, it's just that with OCD, the obsessive thoughts are unwelcome, while with OCPD the sufferer believes that they are actually correcting a problem.

I'm probably explaining this poorly, but it doesn't really have anything to do with the comment I made, everything I said applies to both OCD and OCPD as far as I can tell.

[–]davy_crockett 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So OCD includes anal-retentiveness, but not every person who is anal-retentive has OCD?

[–]ShanduCanDo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, I don't think there's really a scientific basis for the idea of "anal retentiveness", it's more of a cultural thing – so I suppose it depends what you mean by "anal retentive".

If you're talking about people who are extremely anxious about neatness or compelled to correct things they think are "out of place", I suspect those people would generally qualify as obsessive-compulsive. If you're talking about somebody who just generally likes things to look nice or maybe they're an asshole about it, but it's not something they get overly anxious about, then they probably wouldn't have OCD but also wouldn't be bothered by this picture.

At least, that's my understanding.

[–]radar77008 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think the point he was driving at is that most people who fall under the "slightly annoyed" category will more often than not will label themselves as OCD. I'm slightly annoyed by it and and would love to fix it. However, I don't continue to think about it after I have stopped looking at the picture.

I have OCD but my version isn't really what is shown in this picture. My version of OCD eventually led me to go to prison. I don't think this picture describes true OCD. True OCD is caused by your brain constantly firing electrical signals in an effort to fix a problem. Usually OCD is caused by some kind of traumatic event or ongoing traumatic events. Your brain then tries to fix the feelings by firing but the thing is that it keeps firing those electrical impulses and will never stop so you are constantly trying to fix your emotions. This is also the cause of hoarders.

My version of OCD is actually a brain tumor, that sings showtunes out of tune.
The only thing that relieves my symptoms is to write incoherent dribble to reddit's comment section. L oL<3

87% of people who say they have OCD do not have it. They think it makes them sound original and different without it being a disturbing or sickening disorder. Some actually think it is "cool" to be diagnosed with it. Many actually believe they have it when, in reality, they do not.

I don't have OCD, but I do have CDO.

It's like OCD, but the letters are in the right order.
