I actually returned from a month at Ft Lewis over the summer. My god, there's nothing like waking up in a tent city in the morning, and walking outside to Mt. Ranier.

Lol, the big one? We had a pretty big one a few years ago, I think 7.1 and there was almost no damage. An 8.9? Would be ugly.

[–]Osiris32 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No. An earthquake would be bad, but Mt Rainier erupting woul be catastrophc. The entirety of the Seattle/Tacoma area rests on pyrochlastic and lahar deposits. According to the USGS, if Rainer erupted with 24 hours warning you would still have 50% or better casualties.

Also, the quake you refer to was in 2001. It was a 6.8, located near Olympia, and was at a depth of 52 km. This is why there wasn't a lot of damage, however Sea-Tac's control tower had to be replaced, and the dome at the state capitol building was cracked.

[–]Sucka27 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

50% casualties where? The greater Seattle area? Or Orting? Can you link your source, it sounds like an interesting read.

[–]Osiris32 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Can't link a source, I'm getting this from my father, who is a professional geologist and has been pubished a couple times. His area of study is the Cascade volcanoes, and has been doing so since the late '70s. He worked for the USGS from '79 through '90, and was part of the team that worked the St Helens eruption.

I can try and find the studies, but it'll take me a couple hours, as I only just got up, and still need to take a shower, get dressed, and run errands.

[–]Potatoez 10 points11 points ago

Shhh, don't give it away. It's the only place that can contain so many hipsters at once. If more people move in, it'll displace the hipster across the entire nation!

[–]munificent 16 points17 points ago

It's the only place that can contain so many hipsters at once.

Clearly you're forgetting about Portland.

[–]Potatoez 3 points4 points ago

But would Portland be able to handle the influx of Seattle's hipsters? Since it's pretty full of them down there already.

PAX gives you the wrong impression, because it is always in late summer so the weather is about as good as it gets. Drop by earlier in the year for a couple of weeks before you decided to move.

I love Seattle, don't get me wrong, but boy that weather gets to some people.

[–]psychicsword 2 points3 points ago

There's plenty of people who do like living in Seattle. I have a mild-moderate cast of photosensitivity so the lack of sun is awesome for me. Also there's a great way to deal with hipsters: stop giving a shit. Just let them do whatever makes them happy, and then move the fuck on.

[–]Hemmerly 1 point2 points ago

I grew up here. Maybe seattles problem are people like you who see twilight and become experts on Washington or see comics like those and are now meteorologist who wrote their thesis on northwest weather. It rains yes, but the good weather far outweighs the bad

[–]aliberalelite 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

when the weather is good, the city is great. congrats on growing up here, i've still lived here for 6 years and that's long enough to know the very distinct difference between the period from late june to september that rocks and the winter months which never end. and i don't really care about the rain anyway, that's never what's gotten to me. it's hardly real rain anyway. it's the low-lying thick clouds that make for such dark winters. there's such a lack of light. human beings need light. it has vitamin D, and it keeps you from getting depressed. that's all i'm saying.

and no, i never once based a single opinion about this area off some terrible tweeny vampire movie. maybe seattle's problem is jaded people like you who grow up here and decide that you don't possibly need to see another city or respect the opinion of someone who's lived elsewhere. OOPS, did i just make a completely unfounded and condescending assumption?

I used to always want to move to Seattle. Every time I visited I wanted to stay. So, two and a half years ago my husband changed jobs and two adults, a child, four cats, and a fetus flew west.

And I love it here. :) If it was near to my family it'd be absolutely perfect.

Two more blocks or so to the right in that picture and I'd be able to see my house. I think it's a great shot, as it's not an angle of Seattle you often see.

All the rain and gray skies we get doesn't seem so bad when you get views like this on a nice sunny day. It really isn't that bad, the actual rain accumulation is a lot less than other places, it just seems like more because it rains lightly for a long period of time, instead of pouring down for a shorter time. Washington state is just a great fucking place to live!

The Northwest is beautiful. I dont think its the rain that gets to you as much as the darkness. Seattle is pretty far north. You go about 8 months solid without a peak of sunlight which is hard enough but in the winter sunrise is around 8 am and sunset is around 4pm. If you work normal hours and dont have windows in your office its basically nighttime all the time. That said Seattle is a pretty decent city and the beauty of the Northwest kind of makes it worth it.

I used to hate flying back to the west side after visiting eastern Washington. Sunshine everywhere east of the Cascades but always perpetual overcast back home. I finally couldn't take it anymore and moved somewhere sunny.

I tried to explain to someone one time how ugly LA is to fly over, especially compared to Seattle. They seemed to think that was an odd thing to notice.

flying over LA is strange and terrifying when you come from Canada. houses as far as the eye can see D:

That was my thought back in the mid-90's when I flew from Vancouver to Toronto... landing in Toronto, with all those dizzying rows of homes, was one of the most surreal experiences of my life...

I can't even imagine LA

The plane is above my current work, on that note I was flying out of SeaTac going to CDG, We were flying North-- We flew over and banked right above my work I flipped it off-- it was pretty bad ass. I even knew the streets we were flying over-- Right at Rainier and McClellen. :)

I would normally say "FUCK the shitty weather we get here", but I guess it makes it that much more special when you can actually see the sky and the beautiful mountains.

I love Seattle. I went there last year and didn't get to see much because of the convention I was attending, but what I did see was so cool. I would love to go again.

Whenever I go to Seattle, it's not raining. I think it's a myth to keep people from discovering this beautiful city.

Also, my parents almost moved there before I was born, but decided to stay in the Philadelphia area instead. :(

Yea, I miss Seattle. I'm from California but I always wanted to move there. My Dad, took me on vacation one year, to Seattle and Vancouver. Best trip I think I ever had. We flew to Seattle and drove into Canada. I miss my teenage years....Thanks for sharing its now my background.

It's tough to beat "Mountain Days" in Seattle (the few days you can actually see Mt. Rainer). Strangely, I have come to enjoy the rain up here as well as the cold Autumn days when the sun is out and the trees are vibrant with color. After that, it's bunker-down mode until the gray lifts sometime next May.

[–]LettersFromTheSky 0 points1 point ago

Seattle also lies on a few fault lines and is built right where a lahar type event from Mt.Rainer would occur if it ever erupts. I only know this could I had to do a research paper about it for a geology class I took in college awhile ago.

[–]manustillflops 0 points1 point ago

It really is. The first time I flew in was a storied cloudless day in Seattle. Everything was so bright and green and I made the comment to the people I was going in to see and that not something I'd normally do at all, but even I couldn't help but notice.

When I first moved to Seattle, I had never driven in the city before. When I rolled into town, with all my possessions in the back of my pickup truck, it had been raining the ENTIRE way from California.... until I got to Seattle proper, in the morning. A rainbow crossed the sky, the sun came out from behind the clouds and sparkled on the water of the sound, and I felt like I had come home.

I went to Seattle in early 2009, I fell in love with it as soon as I saw Mt.Rainier and the rest of the north western volcano chain from the air. It was one thing sitting in a lecture hall hearing about it and seeing photographs of these huge structures, but to actually see it, blew my mind.

The sensation of stepping off that aircraft and feeling that 50 degree temperature was incredible. (coming from the august heat of summer in Texas)

I booked a room at the Green Tortoise. Explored the city, the piers, Boeing, ate some awesome food, hung out in cool bars. Took the ferry over to bainbridge island. Just awesome, I can't wait to return and make the trek up to Vancouver!

but the bums tho, sheesh!

I've lived here for most of the last 23 years. I'm stuck her now because my daughter lives here, and I would never leave her without a dad. But for fuck's sake, the lack of sunshine here makes all of us--even the heartiest and happiest soul--want to kill ourselves several times each year.

[–]sparktika 0 points1 point ago

I grew up here and still live here. I had no idea how great I had it until I traveled. I used to long to go live in other cities, but now, whenever I travel, I come home and realize that while other places are great to visit, there really is no other place I'd want to live.

How about the volcano in the background ? Assuming it's Mount Rainier, aren't you all going to die ? Or is wikipedia part of the conspiracy to keep other people away from this awesome place ? I'm not a US redditor so don't worry about me flying over anyway.

[–]rscats 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If the volcano erupted people in the city would not be in danger at all. It's simply too far away. Would other people in the state evacuate? Yeah definitely but there is not any danger of being burned in a volcano eruption if you live in or even a few hours outside of the city (me.) The smoke/black skies wouldn't be fun though.

[–]sncho 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They're more worried about lahars (mud flow) than eruptions.

I live in Vancouver. Same deal. Except it's never, ever, sunny. We get like a month and half of summer, then it's back to the endless, depressing rain.

Oh well Hawaii for Christmas vacation :-)

[–]Sucka27 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I also feel like Vancouver is a prettier city in general. More trees and area undisturbed by development, right near the city. The drive to Whistler is the 2 1/2 hours I didn't want to end. It was a sunny summer day though, so that might be a secret too.

[–]stlnstln 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah the Sea-to-Sky is amazing. I'd never live in the town in between Whistler and Vancouver (Squamish) but it's also a very nice place to go check out.

Vancouver is a pretty city but it's also pretty expensive. Some houses in decent neighborhoods are 1-floor with small lots and they go for 1.2-1.5 million CDN/USD.

Too much foreign investment into land here. The prices get inflated due to the ridiculous demand and the locals can't afford to buy. I wish property taxes were 50% of property value if the owner did not use the property as primary residence.

[–]The_Nino 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've only been to Vancouver once, on one of the sunny days, and didn't realize how much of the homeless where everywhere until then. Needles everywhere and even saw on guy shooting up in a park.

[–]nathris 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's what Victoria is for. Even nicer, and we get 1/3 of the rain. Its basically 5 1/2 months of summer, 5 1/2 months of autumn, and then if we're lucky 4 weeks of cold enough to snow but it doesn't because it never rains.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I must disagree. Flying into something like that, looks like a cancer to me. I am sure there is plenty to do but it just does not make up for the lack of open spaces and sunlight.
