Well, to be honest your position is one that will get upvotes if anything... but so will the thread. So something needs to be said because while the devil's advocate position drives the success of these kinds of images it rarely gets an articulate defense.

When I was an impressionable teenager, I went to somethingawful and saw a picture of the vietnam execution guy standing next to the limo with JFK, ready to pull the trigger and tear asunder not just a sacrosanct locus in American history, not just the anguish surrounding the Kennedy family, but the notion that some things just were too important to be funny.

I laughed my ass off. And I was introduced to the maxim of these sorts of images: anything that makes you laugh is funny.

Now that I'm older and, I like to think, a mite more sophisticated, I still think images like the OP are funny, and I've yet to find a better defense. But it's a tough defense to make one's own, because we've all seen the kind of things people will laugh at.

But how can you deny the reality? The very act of saying "That's not funny" serves more often as a follow-on punchline than a solemn reminder to respect our common human dignity or the sacrifice and anguish of our ancestors.

But give the same events 100 years and a history teacher will make kids laugh about it because they've got 10 seconds to sell why it's important and they want them to remember it.

But I also don't want to give the impression that distance from these events is all that matters. People laugh at rape jokes and the story goes that this only serves to enforce internet misogyny. People laugh at the world trade center with AT-ATs in the background and are told they trivialize a tragedy.

But a rape joke by itself does not radiate oppression waves into the social aether. It furthers misogyny only because of the discrete and predictable behavior of misogynists. And, this fact of those people who take it seriously is what makes it a joke in the first place whether you laugh because you identify it or you laugh because you identify with it.

When history has moved even further and the values of western democracy placed in a bigger context against the actions of those nations that espoused them, the importance of Normandy will become another triviality. And no one will have seen star wars. Who then will laugh at the picture in the OP?

I return to the image of Kennedy, moments before his death, smiling and waving, a pixelated gun to his head in defiance of all laws of perspective, scale, and causality. Why did it make me laugh? Why was it funny? Because it was important. Images of an event that happened decades before I was born still moved me. Still told a compelling tragedy. And then something went clunk with that image on all too many levels.

So too with the OP. If this is funny, it's not because it means nothing to you, it's because it means something.
