Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

While on the topic of "strange eye things", when closing and rubbing your eyes does anyone else see these faint purplish rings flying towards them? Sort of like traveling through a wormhole or something.

[–]Iworkonspace 30 points31 points ago

Yes!

I've seen these my whole life. I can make them appear at will, though. Purple bubbles.

What's it called when a person has physical control over whatever muscles make your eyes shake/vibrate really fast?

Some time ago I asked an eye doctor about the floaters and she said they're normal. But she also told me that if I ever see flashes of light and/or tunnel vision, then that means going straight to the emergency room. Signs of retina detaching as far as I could understand. I hope your purple bubbles are something else harmless, especially since you've had them for a long time. But I would recommend an appointment to check the back of your eyes if you haven't done it already.

While on the topic of "strange eye things", sometimes when I stand up too quick and get lightheaded my vision is filled with a yellow and black checkboard pattern. Anyone else see this?

[–]maloewen 10 points11 points ago

Yeah. I don't know if they are real colors that I could describe, but it's an artificial-looking mess.

I think you are describing the visual signals generated by physical tension on your retina's connection to the eyeball. Pretty sure this can contribute to retinal detachment, which can cause blindness. So, uhm, stop it.

[–]A_Noney_Mouse 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well that explains my blindness..

[–]buurin 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I see them.

Try out an isolation tank. They'll be so vivid you'll feel like you're flying through space. There is nothing to distract you in the tank so they just keep coming if you remain still and let them. Its so dark that even if you blink they remain. Sometimes I can't even tell if my eyes are open or closed.

[–]PrinceKelso 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What about when you're in the dark and you zone out, and feel like you're flying through space? Kind of like the hyperspace screensaver for Windows XP?

[–]AndreasTPC 1 point2 points ago

When I was a kid I used to lay on my bed with my eyes closed and my head facing my pillow, pretending that I was flying trough space, while seeing this.

I have them, my doctor told me they're normal and not to worry...One of mine looks like a dinosaur head floating around my left eye. Kind of fun actually. I make imaginary rawring noises when I see it so people don't think I'm totally bat shit crazy.

[–]OMGITEXPLODED 81 points82 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i've become pretty good at it- you have to flick your eye in the direction you want the floater to travel, then counterflick to try and catch the floater directly in front of your retina while looking straight forward. Its easiest if you lie down and look straight up.

[–]SoggyToastTime 118 points119 points ago

There's definitely ways to stare at them. You need to focus and stare at them with your peripheral vision. I've got diabetic retinopathy and have hemorrhages in my eyes. I can plainly make them out and watch them. They sort of look like a cross between seaweed and a bug on the windshield. The only difference is that mine are a dark red/brown black color than a regular floater.

[–]Observer001 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If they stopped moving, you wouldn't be able to see them, actually; your eye is jiggling minutely basically constantly, and if you stop it from doing so you'll eventually stop being able to see. It follows thereby that the motion is important to being able to process data visually, and thus that floaters need to move to be seen.

I don't know what it's called, but my wife hates it when I do it. I'm not even sure how I learned, I just figured it out one day. That and figuring out how to wiggle my ears.

Both of these "feats" of dubious interest are great for messing with kids' heads.

I once spun around while standing to try to catch these floaters in the center of my eye. I must have looked like I was going crazy. These floaters are so fucking annoying I see them everyday.

[–]GreatBabu 36 points37 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Floaters? Yes. I have one dead center in one eye. Reading anything with a white background is distracting as all hell.

[–]foofdawg 48 points49 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Probably not good if it doesn't "float away" when you flick your eyes around. If it is constantly "there in the center" you should probably check with an optician or opthomalogist or whatever

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah - this is ultra serious actually. If it's not floating around freely it's still attached to your retina - and each little flip and flop is it tugging more tissue away from your retina. It needs to be tacked down by a laser (out patient - numb eyes - crazy machine - back of the eyeball feels poked, repeatedly)....sounds horrible but it's a good life experience and it prevents premature macular degeration down the road. Macular degeneration is the #1 cause for blindness in middle-age and old-age. Also avoid blows to the head, especially before you get your retinal dead spots tacked down - because all that vitreous swishing helps lift and kill healthy retinal tissue.

[–]Akottens 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have this too, it even has a little red coloring which is scary. One day I woke up and my eye hurt a bit, and bam! it was there. I even have about 3 other small ones on the far sides. I went to the optician and he said it was rare for a 21 year old to have them, so they gave me the scan and found nothing, telling me it would probably go away. It hasn't. It's shape even seems to rotate occasionally, and if I rub my eyes the location of the floater will change for a bit, then go back to about a little down and left of center. Weird isn't it?

[–]hikahi 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Get a second opinion? Pain in the eye + floaters with color sounds like bad juju to me!

[–]moop64 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Same here. It bounces along underneath the words when I'm trying to read and is incredibly annoying. I asked my optician about it and he said it could take years to go away, perhaps never. I've had mine for about a year and no change.

Have you ever seen this before? A lot of people that can see floaters can also be annoyed by visual snow. Kind of like this but less intense.

edit: Damn, I didn't know so many people could relate to this. r/visualsnow is a sub-reddit I made awhile back, there are some visual snow simulations that you can show people who don't understand what it is, as well as forums.

It is thought to be a type of persistent migraine aura.

There is actually someone being blinded for a month to see if it induces neuro-plasticity and essentially 'resets' the visual center to see if it stops this (and its other related symptoms).

[–]ireferencepsychology 8 points9 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah. Most definitely not normal (maybe wrong word). Though, it seems like most people I've met and talked to about this either -

  1. Have no idea what I'm talking about
  2. Have had it forever and thought it was normal
  3. Never had it originally but got it at some point in their life above childhood (for some unknown reason)

I never saw anything to this degree at all up until a few years ago. Not even in complete darkness.

It is thought to be a type of persistent migraine aura.

Well it's actually pretty normal for people to see this at night, it becomes a problem though when a person has visual snow during the day. Which is more rare. I have it from anxiety related issues. But I can see this if I simply look at a solid background of an object when it's bright as day out.

I think you mean the episode with the kid that also had autism. He couldn't communicate that he saw squiggly lines in his eyes, so he kept drawing what looked like waves on a board.

Little speckly things, you see, when you're looking into a bright light or something?" blank stares.

For years, I'm thinking I've just got some weird mutation.

Now I know.

Oh squiggly line in my eye fluid. I see you lurking there on the peripheral of my vision.

But when I try to look at you, you scurry away.

Are you shy, squiggly line?

Why only when I ignore you, do you return to the center of my eye?

Oh, squiggly line, it's alright, you are forgiven.

i started getting these really bad a year ago and they've progressively increased. I saw an eye doctor last summer to check if there was retina detachment...she said no. But I'm going back this week for another check with a different doctor just in case since they seem to be getting more visible...a bit nervous...wish me luck!

I have them too. What is more aggrevating is seeing my heart beat in my right eye. It matches my pulse and when i am worked up can get really fucking annoying. Eye doc says there is shit all you can do about it, as the eyeball is resting against an artery.

On a serious note:

If you notice a sudden increase in the number of eye floaters, contact an eye specialist immediately — especially if you also see flashes of light or lose your peripheral vision. These can be symptoms of a retinal tear or a retinal detachment, which requires prompt attention.

Tormented? No.

I play games with them.

Try to get them to "land" on a persons head. It's harder than lunar lander!

Or trying to work them around maze-like obstacles in my view.

My friend, floaters are not there to displease you; in fact they are there to give you some respite from the dull tedium that is your life.

I have lots of visual snow, day or night. I had no idea this even existed, the optician I mentioned it to looked a bit like I'd made a pass at him whilst wearing a beard made out of bubbles. I swear it's from this awful monitor I used when I was 19 or so, like the dust patterns are burned into my retinas. I also sport some delightful hypnagogia of an evening, so it may be related.

I have extremely bad floaters, so bad that they effect my vision adversely. In 2009 I required a vitrectomy on my left eye to remove my vitreous humour and I will likely require one on my right eye soon.

[–]SeaCowFarmer 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i talked to an eye doctor about these, and apparently its only the gel on the inside of your eye coagulating, sometimes it can be retinal detachment, meaning you're going blind. if you have had them forever however they are probably not that.

I had not idea this was something that other people had. I've had them since I was a kid. Mine looks like a circle within a circle (akin to a "bullseye"). Interesting. When I was younger I would waste time trying to float them to just the right spot, then train my eye not to move or flinch. The things we did before internet, and cable television.

First off, I've had them clouding my entire vision, both eyes, for as long as I can remember.

To everyone saying things like "ZOMG IM NOT ALONE!!!!" or "TIL what these are!!" what the fuck is wrong with you? Do you not know how to use Google? Or not know how to formulate a proper search query? Even if you search for "shit in my eyes" you'll find the answer.

Random bits of proteins floating in the vitreous fluid of the eye. That's why they don't stay in place and are near impossible to look at directly, they're inside your eye.

It's the same effect you get when you rotate a container of fluid around its vertical axis: the container rotates while the fluid moves a little bit with the initial rotation, but not nearly as much as the containing vessel.
