Yeah, most colleges don't cotton to this any longer. It's your responsibility to get the assignment in on time. If you don't, whatever the reason, it's your fault. End of discussion.

[–]Smellmyhand 178 points179 points ago

I came here to make sure nobody fell for this. Trust me, college professors don't give a single fuck and or shit about computer issues. If they can't read the actual paper at the deadline, you're fucked.

[–][deleted] 96 points97 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm a TA. You send me a file that I cannot open, I fail you for the assignment. I do not have enough time to track you down and play freshmen games.

Edit: I am not an unreasonable person, and I am a pretty easy grader. Not having enough time translates to just trying to get your grades in on time. I grant extensions for decent-to-good students, or students with reasonable excuses. However, I have found that most decent-to-good students never ask for extensions. But if you Facebook/Reddit/whatever all through the lecture and clearly do not pay attention, then I am not going to help you out.

[–]kittycuddler 9 points10 points ago

While that's sometimes true, and probably better to plan for that, I've found most of the profs I've had don't care about late work and give students stupid amount of time to finish shit.

Of course that's probably dependent on what your major is. I was in a media arts and science major with a lot of classes in computer science. I'd imagine a lot of the profs who are like you described would be English, Science (as in bio etc), and Math.

[–]hunli 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It also depends on what classes you're taking. GEC's would probably care a lot more because some are weed out classes and the professors know that the classes can be taken for granted. Major courses, you get to know the professors more to develop a repertoire allowing for more leniency.

[–]kevtron3k 5 points6 points ago

[–]kittycuddler 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah. Weed out classes are the biggest bullshit ever. I can understand not wanting jokers in your later classes, but actively trying to get people too scared to continue with their chosen education is bullshit.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If they can't handle the weed out class, then they aren't likely going to do very well a couple years down the road when they actually have difficult classes. It saves everyone time and energy (and money) if the people who can't handle the major are dispatched sooner rather than later. Do you really want a doctor or engineer who can't handle a freshman level class?

[–]kittycuddler 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know what the weed out classes you took were, but in my major, weed out class didn't mean a hard class, which would be fine. Weed out basically meant they went above and beyond to make sure you would not enjoy the class even if you thought it was easy. They would assign 50 page papers that wouldn't even be graded etc just to fuck with you. The teachers were purposefully bad at communication and wouldn't respond to emails even after three-four days until after due dates and would then be like why are you emailing me? You get a zero. Assignments wouldn't be posted online anywhere and were explained very shittily in class once, and usually weren't mentioned again.

Maybe in a major like medical or engineering the weed out classes are actually just hard classes and the ones I took were just bad teachers who enjoyed torturing freshman. That's a very good possibility lol. The more I remember about the classes, the more I find that's probably the better explanation.

Of course, it was also a problem with the school requiring classes that aren't in your major that are weed out courses for that major lol.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

That sounds terrible. That doesn't seem normal to me. Maybe you just had cruel instructors or something.

[–]kittycuddler 0 points1 point ago

Yeah that's possible lol, but then for the next three years I had nothing but awesome classes, so it's all good haha.

[–]asmodeanreborn 1 point2 points ago

You had computer science classes where they accepted stuff late? I don't think I had a single computer science class where you didn't get a 0 on late assignments unless you had a VERY good excuse.

[–]metallink11 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Any class that gives you an automatic 0 for a late assignment is bullshit, especially CS where you can just submit it online without having to bother the professor or TA. Go ahead and dock points for a late assignment, but having 30 seconds be the difference between a 100% and a 0 is ridiculous.

Also, I'll just note that most of my CS classes would dock 10% per day up to about a week.

My university required all papers to be submitted via text paste to an online plagiarism check site, where they can also review the paper if the hard copy / file isn't around.

I don't doubt it works on some teachers but a lot of them are too smart for this and way smarter than students think. But let's be real, if you're having so much trouble turning in assignments on time, that you need to fake a computer glitch, you probably shouldn't be in college.

[–]tarmadadj 0 points1 point ago

In my first semester, freshman year at college, we got an assigment and i needed the points to pass.

When i was on the revision people kept telling me that something was wrong with my Teacher's installation and he was giving bad grades to everyone, at the end i could show him that, comparing his computer with mine and he acknowledged it but there were several students that never realized this and kept the bad grades, i know is a somewhat rare case but it could happen.

BTW, it was a CS assignment and the thing that was corrupt was my teacher's JDK installation

Yup, I remember once I failed a project because I accidentally sent it to the teacher as a .rar and not a .zip. My prof didn't even ask for me to resend it in a format he could open, he just gave me a 0 for the project.

[–]chrisms150 11 points12 points ago

That's just plain old mean - unless he requested it in a .zip format, in which case I guess you're sunk and had no course of action

Oh he probably did. This was over 10 years ago, so I can't remember exactly except I was so angry at the time.

edit: thinking harder, I am pretty sure the instructions said "upload .doc or .zip" .rar files were a little obscure when I was in college. So yea, I was screwed, my fault.

Try responding to an RFP with a deadline with the shit wrong like this then saying "oops, I'm sorry".

No, your proposal is thrown out for not meeting the deadline. Your battleship is sunk.

[–]gerbs 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My professors required hardcopies of all assignments. The library had a printer, and you could even ask the prof to print it out for you if you sent it at least 2 days in advance.

There was no chance of a paper being in the wrong format (unless you did it in Chicago instead of MLA)

When I got this from my students, I just sighed. I know you're trying to get a cheap extension. You might think it's clever, but I have graded more papers than you will ever write. This may have worked in 1999 when I was an undergraduate, but it's a failed gambit now. It's insulting, really. Just do your work. On time.

[–]ripperbard 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My favorite is still the slightly-more-than-double-spaced lines, or slightly-tightened-margins, or 12.25 pt type. Like I can't spot it. Hell, like I didn't try it myself when I was an undergrad.

[–]xtralitespeed 3 points4 points ago

[–]ripperbard 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ah, gotcha. My experience on the teaching/grading end has all been in English classes, and often our maximum (for sophomore-level World Lit classes) was only a page/page and a half or so. By the time you have an intro, conclusion, and make a salient point about a text, you'll at least need that much room, but we still had people trying to turn in one paragraph responses triple spaced and in 14 pt.

But yeah, larger seminar papers the length should for the most part simply be "however much or little as it takes." Once out of freshman comp and all that, most of my profs as an undergrad took that approach, too.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What about lengthening a five page project to an eight page project by changing all of the 12 point sized periods in the paper to 14 or 16 point font periods. It's simple with the find and replace tool.

Expanded a longish paper into an even longer paper, and it works every time.

[–]ripperbard 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Huh... I'd have to see it on the page to see if I'd catch it as easily. My inclination would be to say I would, but I also do freelance book design on the side so have a better eye for that sort of thing than a lot of profs/TAs.

I guess it would depend on if the paper was fully justified or left justified. If it's left justified with a jagged right margin, I'd definitely catch it and think most profs would. If it's fully justified (and so kerning would be variable on a line-by-line basis), maybe not.

[–]jsellout 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'll admit I did this. SEVERAL times. And it worked EVERY time. The thing I don't think you teachers realize is that some of your students have to work two jobs to be able to pay for your stupid class and eat, while others only have to live in a dorm paid for by daddy.

[–]stoolydan 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"Realizing some students work two jobs" is not the same as "place equal value and priority on the two jobs the students work." Every student has unique circumstances and it would be unfair to ask a professor to establish a unique set of rules and expectations for each student. Being understanding and flexible when students ask for help with legitimate problems, as 9 out of 10 professors are, is a reasonable accommodation.

I worked full time (40 hours running my own business), slept in a car, commuted 300 miles a weekend to shower and get a change of clothes (showering at the gym gets old), and still managed a 3.5. I never once complained about deadlines. If you can't handle the work, then you shouldn't be in college.

I wrote longer essays on tests in 3000 level courses than most people will write in their undergrad career.

[–]thegeneralstrike 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think education should be free. Furthermore, I think you should be paid to attend school. It's a way of socialising the cost of training employees whilst internalising the benefits thereof for the rich - that's morally repugnant. That you have to work to pay for your education in "my stupid class" is rather wrong. Even if you think my class is "stupid," your problem is one among many of the micro class bias(s) of the educational system. That being said, it doesn't change the fact that you're still bloody cheating. I'm working too. I'm fucking teaching you, instead of doing my work. And, it's still bloody insulting.

I did something similar that ended up being one of the funniest/most memorable things that's ever happened to me.

I was taking a history class where the final grade was 100% based on 15 essays which were to be completed at the end of each week. Each essay had to be about 5 pages in length and was to be based on that week's lesson. In the beginning of the term, the professor said that we didn't have to e-mail them to him every week so long as he received them all by the end of the term.

So, of course, fast forward to one week before the end of the term and I had started exactly 0 of the 15 essays, figuring that I'd just cram them in at the last moment. After realizing that this was simply an impossible task, I came up with a plan: I e-mailed the professor a day or two before the end of the term and said: "I just wanted to confirm that you've received all of my essays. Thanks for a great semester!". I figured that I could get a few extra days to complete the essays after he'd inevitably reply with something like: "hmm, actually no I haven't received them, could you try sending them again?"

So in the next few days I started writing the essays. I had finished 3 of the 15 when I got a response from the professor: "Received them all. Thanks!" My heart stopped. What.the.fuck.do.I.do? I hadn't sent him a single piece of work for the entire semester. I tried to imagine all the possible scenarios: was he calling my bluff? Was he mistaking me for another student? Either way, he had to know that he didn't have any of my work. Should I write them all and then send them anyway? What the hell do I do?

So, of course, I decided to do nothing. I didn't respond and simply awaited my grade. Several weeks later, the grades were in and there it was: an A- .... like a boss.

[–]bokanovsky 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Guess what--your prof didn't bother reading any of those essays. Seriously, 75 pages from every student in the class? I'd say your prof was the boss.

As a teacher, I've seen my fair share of assignments. If you cheat, I might not catch you this time but when I do the rest of your life with me is going to be fucking hell. And for what? A stupid grade on a stupid assignment? Better to just tell me the truth up front. If you've acted with diligence and honor in the past, I take that into consideration and I am understanding. We can work something out like adults. My goal is to help you learn. Grades in my class are just one signal of what you understand and not a reflection of you as a person. So don't be a pussy and weasel your way through like this. Have some guts. Admit it's late, take the grade penalty but understand that that portion of your final mark is just a smudge on the overall assessment you get on the quality of what you hand in.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Syllabus fix: Any failure to give me a complete working copy of your document will be considered ineptitude and will be graded as such.

Also, you are paying thousands of dollars a year to get an education. You could at least do the work and pretend to give a shit.

Yeah cheating is a great solution to not finishing your homework on time. And while there are ways around it, it looks pretty obvious when the file is way too small.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I did this 10 years ago with corrupted floppy disks (when we were allowed to turn them in). Times have changed.

You will still get docked in most classes. They don't care, it's up to you to get the file in. If it is messed up, then it's your fault.

Once a professor of mine was unable to open a file that was actually the completed assignment. He BARELY accepted the excuse, even though it was legit. After that I started sending two files, a .doc and a .rtf EVERY time.

I remember finding the summarize function in microsoft word. I had thought I had a 5 page paper due a week after it actually was. I had 30 minutes to complete this paper. I searched the web for articles and other papers regarding my topic. All of these together were about 11 pages. I had word summarize them down to 5 pages, edited for grammar and overall flow of the paper...received an 85....Not bad

This changes everything. Why have I not yet written a program to do this myself? Oh, wait. That's because I'm in Computer Science and usually don't have to write the sort of things it would help me with. Still, it's interesting. Thanks for the tip.

[–]sincerely_me 0 points1 point ago

In my experience, I have to disagree for the most part with all of the comments suggesting college professors or instructors will just say, "Sorry. Not my problem." Sure, I've known a couple who were like that, but my professors have always been pretty forgiving if there was at least a slightly more legitimate excuse than, "I forgot it was due/waited too long to start it." However, I will say that an instructor with any knowledge of Word should know that (s)he can look at the file properties and see when it was created, last modified, etc., which sort of negates the OP's strategy anyway, since even the nice professors won't like to find out that you've lied to them.

I've done this before. It works. Play it cool and make sure you explain that you dont understand why it can't be opened and send the broken file again and copy and paste the content of the completed assignment in the e-mail to your professor.

Try this these days and it gets forwarded to IT for 'recovery'. In reality we open it in Notepad and copy out the plan-text and send it back to the teacher.

When the only plaintext in the document is "sskdjfnsdkfjsdfkjsbdfksjbf sdfkjsdfkjsdfsdkjfh", we add a note saying "Yeah this kids bullshitting".

I'm beginning to think that American universities just don't try anymore. When I was in school to hand everything in on paper, to prevent things like this. I've heard of schools accepting electronic submissions but they had to be in RTF format. This wouldn't work in that case.

At my school, we have a system to submit papers where we copy/paste the text into their document, and then upload our pictures or charts or whatnot. It's kinda Google Docs-esque. Then, when we hit submit, we can actually look at the final submitted version online. It keeps all of the submitted papers in an online locker. There's no way to do anything like this, because there's no way to access the file and no way to have not known something went wrong.
