Hood River is a town located in the Columbia River Gorge (between Oregon and Washington) about 45 minutes or so east of Portland. Tons of windsurfers gather there... Many call it the windsurfing capital of the world.

Oregon doesn't charge sales tax period.

[–]JimmyJamesMac 0 points1 point ago

I know (Eugene here). They should charge sales taxes to out of state residents at their tax rate. We need the money.

[–]MorningLtMtn 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

All that would do is discourage business. Vancouver here. Do you think it's better for Oregon business for me to buy a TV at the Costco in Portland, or the one in Vancouver, WA? The amount of sales that Portland businesses would lose if they implemented your policy would cause a local depression virtually overnight, and you still wouldn't get any more state money.

[–]ssshield 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The issue isn't height, it's having those sharp fins drop on your head from two stories up.

I kitesurf a lot, and I have a lot more fear of catching a sharp board edge to the face than falling from a height or getting lofted.

[–]Zafner 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, the fins and board are way more dangerous than the water surface. If you kite far from rocks and people, there's really almost no reason to wear a helmet apart from that board.

Do you use a board leash? I never have. Are they as dangerous as people say?

[–]ssshield 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm actually the guy to answer that. I wear a board leash. I had a good one and lost it. I tried a "surfboard" leg leash one day. It snapped back and busted my scalp open with the board on a wreck. $1500 medical bills.

I still wear a leash, but a proper retractable instead of the surfboard style. Those things are deadly.

As I progress I lose my board less and less, but still once or twice a session usually. I'm learning big air and it's just part of the game.

Where I surf the lake has huge wind shadows, so if you lose your board in a windy area and have to fight back to it you'll probably have been blown into a shadow area and it's literally impossible to get back out.

If I surfed in a place with constant wind I wouldn't wear one.

[–]Zafner 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I spend about 90% of my ride time in the ocean near a straight beach, so I don't ever wear one and at my favorite spots they are an anachronism. I did lose a board one time, too, in a sort of intercoastal lake area -- a demo board. Had to pay for it, of course.

Anyway, thanks for the info.

[–]TripperDay 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Probably a stupid question, but how do you lose a board in a lake? Doesn't it float?

[–]Zafner 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Find Sebastian Inlet on Google Maps in southeast Florida. Basically much of the Florida coast is barrier islands, and the intracoastal waterway lies between the islands and the mainland. It's a mile or so wide and many miles long, with lots of tidal currents and eddies, mangroves everywhere along the sides, small dredge islands, docks, and the tide shooting out (or in) through the inlet itself.

Sebastian Inlet State Park is rideable in any wind direction because the ocean beach faces more or less east and on the inside there's a sort of finger that extends west out into the intracoastal. If there's an easterly component, you can ride on the ocean side, and if it's westerly you can ride on one side of the finger or the other.

It was blowing out of the northwest, and normally I'd ride on the north side of the spur, but the locals were there and they had a jet ski to pick up anybody who had a major problem, so I rode on the south side with them. I had a pretty major gear problem (broke a line, I think; this was years ago, I can't remember the exact issue) and was able to stand up, but the board got away from me. After the jet ski picked me up and we took care of the kite, we rode around for a while looking for the board, but never found it; it may have gone out the inlet on the tide.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why did he let go, did he think he wasn't going to come back down?

[–]MassiveResponse 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think that when you get up there, and you are holding on to the "wing" it is a major shift to having to hang down from something, whereas a second or two ago you were standing for support, and it is not easy to make this paradigm shift in standing on the board for support, to hanging from the sail.

[–]ssshield 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He knew he wasn't going to land it clean from that height, so he tossed it so it wouldn't land on him. A lot less dangerous.

[–]MassiveResponse 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That makes sense, but there are times that you do certain things for the hell of it, as long as the danger of serious injury is not that high.

I remember being on one of those round inflatable tubing things, being pulled by a boat, and the guy turns and rides over his own wake. The tube, with me on it, go flying into the air at the same time as we turn into a gust of headwind, so i keep flying for a few seconds, and manage not to fall or flip over, but at the same time, keep my jaw clear of the tube, and my appendages and keep tension in my neck muscles, so i don't bite my tongue off or lose teeth when i hit the water. It was pretty awesome, and i could kinda control the new found aircraft by shifting my legs and keeping it steady.

It was totally worth it.

I used to have this recurring nightmare that I would try something inoccuous, like jumping over a small creek, and I would just keep rising. I would go up and up, and could feel myself losing speed as I got to stratospheric heights, and would slow down, and see the ground and begin to fall.

It was always a small, ordinary jump. This might bring those nightmares back.
