Someone did buy ImageBot reddit Gold, which makes me wonder WTF they were thinking, what the hell is a bot going to do with reddit gold?

[–]ImageBot 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The person bought me reddit gold as a show of appreciation for what the bot does. To quote the gifter:

Excellent utility account with a pinch of novelty on top. I support your stated goal & wish to encourage the continued operation of this account.

Reddit Gold was extremely helpful when doing the reddit bot creators' AMA. Gold allowed me to see new comments since the last time I visited which made new questions stand out more.

Gold also allows the bot to load hundreds of comments at once which is a difficult task when using reddit's API. Right now, the bot doesn't need to load that many comments, but in the future...

[–]ImageBot 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can block users if you use the Reddit Enhancement Suite (RES). Enable the user-tagger module and click the (_) next to this username. You should have the option to "ignore". This will hide what is said in the comment, but not the username. I think there's an option in the module settings to do a "hard ignore" which completely removes the comment block.

Edit Yikes, you asked to not see comments by me and then I immediately replied to you... Sorry about that. You won't get any more from me.

[–]Spazit 49 points50 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I remember the first time I came around I played devils advocate and said that you could simiify pretty much any two stories like this to make one seem better than the other. I got downvoted hard for suggesting that Twilight was anything but trash.

In less whining-moaning attitudes, apparently it was this guy, not Stephen King that said that.

[–]gloveraran 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I've seen this attributed to Stephen King about a dozen times in the past week, and no one believes me that it wasn't him. Even when I provide evidence. Apparently, it's not cool if someone famous didn't say it.

[–]sirisaacnuton 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Though it was a friend of mc chris's manager. That's like, tangentially famous...ish. Right?

[–]gloveraran 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Interestingly, though, attributing something to someone more famous than the actual author in order for it to gain more notoriety isn't exactly a new practice.

[–]lumpy1981 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm glad this wasn't written by SK. As much as I agree with the quote, I think it would be a prick thing for him to say because he is in her field of work and he struggled with haters back in the day.

Twilight is a horrendously shallow series, but I am not going to hate on the author because it resonated with so many teenage girls. At least it got them reading.

[–]Spazit 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As shallow as the plot/characters in it were, you can't deny it had something going for it, look at the cult fan base for it and the 4 (or is it 5..?) movies coming out as well. And the graphic novels.

If we could isolate what Myers did that made it such a wild success in teens/not quite teens we could get a whole generation turning pages.

[–]lumpy1981 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I didn't deny they had something going for them. I admitted they did. I just don't think what they have is anything unique or special. She simply made a book that appeals to a demographic that was woefully under-represented.

This is a teenage love story with a hint of supernatural fairytale. It's shallowness and easily understandable/predictable plot lines make it digestible to a large audience.

[–]BoldElDavo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This quote has always annoyed me. I'm not a Twilight fan, I actually believe it's terribly written and I'm amazed an editor let it go through. I just know you could easily say "Harry Potter is about finding the exact thing you need in every situation." Seriously, that series is king of the Deus Ex.

[–]nicholus_h2 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Harry Potter is about constantly being rewarded for disobedience.

And I mean really, you can make any story sound stupid by boiling it down to the vaguest possible summary. When considered at such a level, twilight really isn't that far from Romeo and Juliette. Not that Twilight isn't awful.

[–]leoboiko 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You made a comment I don’t like. Then you made a comment I like, and glued it to the first with a horizontal line. Now I can’t downvote the first comment. That’s some pretty tricky trickery you’re doing there, mate :)

[–]Spazit 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Complaining about downvotes is pretty bad mannered and I had two things I wanted to say. So instead of making two comments I just decided I'd make the one comment and watch the battle between downvotes for the first half and upvotes for the second.

If it makes you feel better you can upvote my previous comment for the second half and give this comment a vengeance downvote?

Edit: I'm not joking reddit. If you're having trouble like leobouiko here, hit me with your best shot.

[–]ojos 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I always thought Harry Potter was about learning to deal with death.

[–]Solomaxwell6 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think so. There's not a huge focus on it, at least not until the last few books. There's Harry's parents (who are dead long before the books start), and a few people get swatted down later on, but it's never the biggest part of the book. I'll avoid spoilers, but there's a major death in the last book, and I can certainly see THAT as learning how to deal with death... but the character doesn't end up actually dying.

But part of the appeal of Harry Potter is that it means a lot of things to a lot of people. So don't let me tell you you're wrong.

[–]burningpumpkins 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Spoilers, but it's Harry Potter, so boo fucking hoo.

Are you sure? Philosopher's stone gives immortality. An innocent unicorn is slain for the vitality of another. The purpose of the chamber of secrets is to kill every muggleborn, meanwhile the memory of Voldemort attempts to kill Ginny to become human. Dementor's Kiss is a state of being worse than dead. Peter Pettigrew: 'You should have died to save your friends!' Voldemort escaping death through the sacrifice of others, including Harry's blood (which incidentally is protected because Lily died for him). The veil in the DoM explaining the nature of life and death. And of course, the last two books are pretty self-evident.

I don't think it's all about learning to deal with death, but death emerges in various themes in the book. Harry also deals with having to consider dying for others throughout the entire story, simultaneously feeling guilt of others dying/suffering for him.

[–]Solomaxwell6 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Death is a recurring theme, but I don't think it's the main theme, especially not if you restrict it to dealing with death. Some of those are reaching... having a villain (or villains) that kills people is fairly standard.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd say the fear vs. acceptance of death is probably the biggest theme throughout the books. I think the first one in particular deals with it pretty explicitly.

[–]cesclaveria 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think HP contains a lot of messages, it touches on a number of topics like discrimination, dealing with loss, overcoming fears, being who you are not matter what other people think, that being smart is good, personal sacrifice for a greater good, putting the ones you love before you, etc.

[–]cbfw86 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

harry potter was about an angsty kid who never learnt a damn thing until dumbledore explained it to him at the end of all the books. and then he beats voldemort on a technicality. voldemort casts avada kedavra and harry casts expeliarmus. what a con. oh and his special move is a deer that he can only summon sometimes. and the part that really pissed me off is that he looked into the mirror of erised and saw his parents WHO HE'D NEVER SEEN UNTIL HE GETS THE PHOTO ALBUM AT THE END OF THE FIRST BOOK! GEEZ!

[–]NinjaBob 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Erised was a magic mirror that showed you your deepest desires. I don't really think it matters if he saw his parents before hand. Also of course he won on a technicality. He was a teenager fighting against an older more powerful wizard who had risen from the dead. Really I think it is more accurate to say that Dumbledore beat Voldemort by using Harry as a pawn.

[–]kosmotron 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You do realize that his parents were alive when he was born, right? Yes he was an infant, but he did in fact see them up until they were killed, and the mirror is fucking magic anyway, so...

So do Twilight fans and Harry Potter fans meet and do battle in dark alleys to decide who the biggest douche bag is?

The Twilight vs. Harry Potter battle annoys me, the two are nothing alike. I wish people would just shuttup and stick to their fandoms instead of starting pointless debates.

He left out the part about Harry Potter being extremely derivative of works by other fantasy authors yet lacking their depth.

I don't care about any of those 2 series. One is for geeks and the other is for chicks.

If you are an adult and you mention to someone in the real world that you love Harry Potter, you look just as fuckin ridiculous as someone who loves Twilight.

At least teenage girls have the excuse that they are teenage girls.

Actually, Harry Potter is about a homosexual coming out of the closet, and discovering an entire culture he never knew existed.

But whatever.

Harry Potter is all about confronting fears, finding inner strength, and doing what is right in the face of adversity. Twilight is about how important it is to have a boyfriend.
