What have they actually changed? I haven't played in about a year.

[–]arlanTLDR 206 points207 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The most visible changes are to the terrain. Biomes are larger, and more distinct. There are new biomes: swamps and mountains. Rivers run between some biomes. Prebuilt villages will be generated on the surface, and abandoned mines will be generated underground. There is also an extremely rare kind of ruin, called a Stronghold, built from a new block type: stone bricks, which also has mossy+cracked variants.

There are also a few gameplay changes. There is a food system now. Eating food doesn't heal you, it fills a hunger bar. Your health will regenerate when its full and deplete when it's empty, the amount this occurs depends on the difficulty. You can sprint by double tapping W. Mobs drop exp, although this doesn't do anything yet. Bows must be shot by holding down the button (no longer spammable) but do bonus damage if pulled to max.

Also, the lighting system was overhauled. Performance should improve a bit when lighting changes occur (notably, at sunrise and sunset). Daylight is whiteish, while torchlight and firelight is reddish (and flickers very slightly)

New mobs: Endermen, who move blocks around. When you target them, they look at you, and then teleport to you. Silverfish: spawned from a block that looks just like stone, so they jump out unexpectedly while mining. ~~They don't do damage yet~~ They do damage, and they swarm and jump at you. [Edit] Cave Spiders, spawn in abandoned mines. They poison you on higher difficulties.

There's a lot more, but I think this should cover the big things. If you haven't played in a year you may notice quite a few other changes.

Should be noted that biomes weren't in the game until the halloween update. That was less than a year ago.

[–]ZoFreX 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I haven't played since just before the Hallowe'en update. WTF is a biome?

[–]arlanTLDR 45 points46 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Biomes are climatically and geographically defined as similar climatic conditions on the Earth, such as communities of plants, animals, and soil organisms,

For minecraft that means there are forests, swamps, plains, tundra, deserts, mountains etc.

EDIT: Here's a map, you can see the different zones. Credit to bobbywalsh707

[–]arlanTLDR 13 points14 points ago

You know, it's funny. I don't remember ever learning about biomes in class. Everything I know about them I learned after they were put into Minecraft.

Specific types of environment. So when you walk around instead of completely random generated patches of sand mountains trees hills etc you have land with certain traits. So you can have a large desert, or an area of tall mountains or grassy plains or a dense forest

Desert, tundra, swamp, rain forest, plains, etc.

A biome is a type of environment that has a distinctive appearance and climate. For example, instead of having lots of random patches of sand, random patches of dirt, random patches of trees, these tend to be concentrated in a way that mimics their appearance in nature. So a desert biome would have lots of sand, few trees except cacti, not much water, etc. A swamp biome would be the opposite or so.

[–]Sheol 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Different areas with different ingame climates. There is a snowy biome, a forest biome, a plains biome, a desert biome, etc.

[–]EvilLordBanana 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Different environment styles. Be it mountains, snow, desert, or grassland. They added these different distinct areas with the haloween update, and made them even bigger and better with 1.8.

[–]Gemini4t 0 points1 point ago

Swamp, mountain, desert, rainforest, taiga, tundra. Those are examples of biomes.

[–]arlanTLDR 21 points22 points ago

The other half is coming in 1.9. Supposedly, there will be NPCs, possibly with some kind of economy. And you will be able to spend the exp you get, possibly on permanent increases to damage, health, mining speed, crafting yield, etc. Supposed to come before the 'release' version in November, so around a month.

[–]PlaySalieri 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]Jedakiah 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That sounds amazing. Increasingly diverse environments to explore and build upon. And if you don't enjoy it, go find your lonesome corner and play like you used to. Win, win, win (Notch wins too).

[–]brbNoveltyAccount 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There is also now a defined "creative mode" for people who say "But, I just wanna build stuff"

[–]PlaySalieri 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know. I feel a little like this.

[–]Jedakiah 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think that stems from a fundamental misunderstanding of what this adds. If Notch were adding quests such as "destroy this mob spawner and be one step closer to defeating the evil block monster, freeing minecraftia" then this complaint would be valid. However, this is more "here are a few more tools and environmental factors, do whatever you want with them". That's well within the spirit of Minecraft.

[–]MatticusF1nch 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I remember hearing that nothing like that wil be permanent. You lose all your skills when you die

[–]Daemon_of_Mail 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's also another new mob, the small blue cave spiders that only spawn in mob spawners randomly generated in abandoned mines. If playing on hard mode, they can poison you, which drains your health until you eat, but only brings you down to half a heart.

Not to mention, several new blocks and items.

[–]arlanTLDR 2 points3 points ago

[–]DrHenryPym 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's a lot more, but I think this should cover the big things. If you haven't played in a year you may notice quite a few other changes.

You outlined the biggest 1.8 changes. The biggest changes I can think of outside of 1.8 are maps, beds, wolves (wild and domesticated), and even the Nether update is less than 11 months old. It's amazing how much this game has changed.

[–]grundee 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Silverfish: spawned from a block that looks just like stone, so they jump out unexpectedly while mining. They don't do damage yet, but they swarm and jump at you.

Why do they keep making this game MORE TERRIFYING?

I already can't play it in any mode but peaceful.

[–]lordlicorice 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You actually have to cook food now to stay alive?

I'd like to just build things. I tried out the Creative mode when 1.8 first came out and hated it; I'm used to zombe's build and fly mods which are vastly superior to the block browser and fly modes of Creative

[–]hunteriam 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I actually prefer the new creative tools- what is so superior abot zombes or others fly mods?

[–]lordlicorice 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The main thing I don't like about the creative fly mode is that it's so slippery. Also I used Zombe's fly a lot even at ground level because it can be configured to be faster than regular walking (I have it configured to be the same speed as I can place blocks in a line). And zombe's has a dash modifier so I can hold left control and zoom ridiculously fast between locations

As for Build, you set the <RightShift + 1-0> keys and <RightCtrl + 1-0> keys to each be bound to a set of 10 of whichever blocks you want. For example I know from habit that rightshift+5 gives me a loadout of the most useful redstone blocks. From there I pick 1-0 of which one I want, and can switch between them with the mouse wheel.

Also you can drop corner markers on blocks and fill the contained volume with any block you want - perfect for clearing rooms in rock, and for copy-pasting designs.

Yeah it just stinks that in the midst of an attack its easier to die because you can't instantly heal. I do like that food stacks now though. I'd be disappointed if it didn't given the fact that you need it and not stacking means it takes up too much inventory

[–]AbouBenAdhem 1 point2 points ago

it just stinks that in the midst of an attack its easier to die because you can't instantly heal

It makes a lot more sense, though. Which would you be more likely to do in the midst of an attack IRL—stop and catch your breath, or stop and have a snack?

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh ok great

[–]arlanTLDR 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As Daemon_of_Mail says, there's a lot more options for food now. All animals (except sheep) drop food, not just pigs. Zombies drop rotten meat which poisons you a bit, but gives you some food. Melons can be farmed fairly easily. The new villages make bread really easy (if you can find one of the new villages). Also, food stacks.

Oh, and mushrooms are more common, especially in the new swamp biome.

[–]daedalus733 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And you can get tons of mushrooms by making giant mushrooms and harvesting them.

[–]KidAirBag 0 points1 point ago

Ive also noticed that there are more smaller bodies of water, and they are all more "lifelike" in generation, if you will... ie. The bottom topography is more natural and gets a little deeper. Very subtle change, but for me, im lovin it. Its the little things...

[–]Fuck_You_Im_Scottish 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When last I played there were no biomes, no hunger, no bows, no lightning, and no mobs. In fact, there was no "mining." I just added/smashed blocks and did nothing else. Apparently I haven't played in a long while.

[–]kmeisthax 0 points1 point ago

You started way back during the classic mode period. Before the game even cost money.

[–]PrancingPeach 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Do the worlds still look very obviously randomly generated? It sounds like adding more biomes and rivers connecting some biomes is a step in the right direction, but last time I played Minecraft (just a few months ago) the world was just overwhelmingly random. It didn't feel natural in any way, shape, or form, and I don't think a few new biomes could fix that.

[–]Tokeli 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And holy fuck are they distinct now. I built a tower to go peek over the land and right near me was this three way intersection of a huge forest, a desert, and some plains. They all stretched off as far as the eye could see, and looked beautiful. They do need some soft transitions though.

It wasn't the 1.8 update (but since you haven't played in a year), they added more mechanics like pistons (push) and sticky pistons (pull). Rails types are detector, accelerators, decelerators, etc.

Recent mods give you light detectors, light bulbs, wireless redstone, teleporters, pipes, pumps, companion cubes, and more. Some mods change the gameplay to Legend of Zelda, others add magical runes, tameable cats that changes into a cat girl, yada yada yada.

If you have the patience, through redstone, repeaters, redstone torches, you can build RAM, serial buses, random number generators, LED output, security combo locks, etc.

Seriously, for $20, you get Legos on crack.

Yeah, had some cheezy moments, needed better direction and some writing clean up. Struck me as being for the 24 crowd. Watched it all though, I've seen far, far worse.

The two girls were spies or something, and the call signaled that the two men were with them. The guy that freaks was friends with them and didn't know they were enemies, thus his freak out.

Argh. I thought it was a pretty good movie. It's just an action flick. Go into it expecting that. It's over the top and fun, go see it if you like that sort of movie.

You also get to hear John Travolta say "motherfucker" a lot. Honestly, this is my personal favorite character he's played. Just by how much of an over the top action hero he plays is.

So, for someone who has never touched minecraft, can you explain its appeal?

[–]captainAwesomePants 31 points32 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Neither the 3D graphics nor the physics are any good. They're about as simple as they can be while getting the point across. There aren't any particular goals, either. It's almost an un-game. You play for as long as you want and do whatever you like. It's like a sim, except it's a sim of a guy wandering around an almost empty land.

Here's my theory on why it's good: investment. You start the game, usually with some sort of FAQ, and you know that in a few minutes the sun is going to go down, and when it does scary monsters are going to come out and kill you. So you build some sort of cramped little ad-hoc shelter, if you're lucky you were even able to build some sort of torch for light inside, and just as the sun dips off the horizon, you close yourself in (maybe even with a door!). Then for 5 minutes you hear terrifying sounds outside while you stand around and expand your little hovel. By the time day breaks, you realize your house sucks and you need a better house. So you wander out, see a spot on a nearby hill that screams "a house there would look awesome," and begin to put it together. But your stupid wooden pick is slow and breaks alot, and you realize you're going to need iron. So you find a likely-looking hole in the ground and start to explore a cave, and by that time you've already set for yourself some sort of goal, which is usually to make your house better.

One thing that doesn't come across in /r/minecraft alot is that Minecraft is a surprisingly terrifying game. Left 4 Dead didn't scare me, but in Minecraft you feel so utterly alone and isolated. You're miles underground, completely lost, feeling like you're the only living thing in a square mile, and then suddenly you realize that you're not.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Every Friday I have people over for gaming. We have the XBox going and multiple PCs. I'm usually playing Eve but with the recent 1.8 I fired up my Minecraft and was really getting into it. A friend notices that I'm barely there, I'm not paying attention to the Call of Duty going on and I'm not laughing at the jokes and such. He looks over my shoulder, sees the crappy graphics, and can't figure out what I'm doing. I give the really brief "it's like legos" thing and I can see he isn't impressed. So, I try to explain the drama.

Minecraft puts me on the edge of my seat like no other game.

I couldn't explain it to him. I think it has to be experienced. The noises, that feeling of being lost deep underground... it just doesn't come across when someone is looking at the ridiculous little graphics and the complete lack of a HUD.

It's true though, Minecraft generates drama.

...then you look at the clock and realise you've been in the game for 5 hours.

[–]jockc 6 points7 points ago

When you were little and playing legos, and you would build houses or buildings and wish that you could shrink down and go into them? It's like that.

[–]idiotthethird 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's like playing lego on steroids, except the lego bricks are also on steroids. And you have a infinite amount of lego bricks. And there are zombies.

[–]S1d3w4yZ 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That about sums it up.

[–]SirRuto 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Okay. It's sort of like having the massive world of an RPG (but not quite, it's sort of empty compared to that) and getting to change every bit of it to your whim. Want to build a castle? Do it? Want to level a mountain? Go for it! Want to build a 96-pixel display with included RAM for storing messages? It's entirely possible.

It's really more of a builder's game, but the latest update has offered some incentive for adventuring players. New terrain generation code makes the whole world a lot more interesting and actual structures are generated like strongholds and villages. There are a few different monsters that are all different in attack pattern, so there's some variety in combat.

To sum up, it's like Red Faction 1 with legos and some RPG conventions, along with a deep electrical system to experiment with. I think there's a demo floating around somewhere if you want to try it. I think PC Gamer has it somewhere.

Actually, if you want to see some gameplay, this is an older Let's Play of the game that got me into it. It's a bit out of date, but I would recommend it.

[–]terranaut_v2 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

On a separate note, if you don't mind explaining, how was Red Faction 1? I fell out of touch with Volition Inc's games after FreeSpace 2 was finished and Interplay went bankrupt. I recall it was some sort of FPS that took place on Mars or something? And you play the part of a miner?

[–]SirRuto 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I actually never played it, but I had heard that it also had destructible environments (you could make caves and shit). I did play RF: Guerrilla though, and that game was amazing. Excellent multiplayer, too. Guerrilla is less destroying the environment and more taking down buildings, though. Which is why I compared Minecraft to RF1.

That's minecraft, except amazing stuff is everywhere and you can build castles and spaceships and giant water slides instead of just cabins.

Me and My friends set up a private server for 1.8, I don't think we've had so much fun together since high school. Think of it as being the guitar hero equivalent for waking up one day on a desert island after the zombie apocalypse and having to rebuild civilization from scratch. Who hasn't fantasized about rebuilding civilization? Plus there is something about staring into the blocky sunset after surviving a night running from blocky zombies that is quite breathtaking in a flatland kind of way.

[–]gte910h 0 points1 point ago

If you play with friends, it's like a giant game of legos, with monsters that randomly attack you, a hell universe you can use for fast travel, exploration, and did I mention the giant game of legos?

They have electricity, circuits, trains, running water, plants, animals, abandoned mines, treasure, and xp.

After first seeing the screenshots and reading how redditors like this so much, I found it pretty stupid for months. Until I started playing it a week and a half ago. Now I'm addicted. That's saying something, considering I am not a gamer and get bored immediately by most games. I also pirated it.

Yeah, I watched a friend play for a while on a few occasions and didn't think it looked that interesting. It wasn't until a lot of other friends started talking about it that I got genuinely curious. I didn't understand the appeal until I tried it. Then I was hooked.

Haven't played in a while because I moved recently and I went back to working full-time so I've been pretty busy. I'll have to check out the new update because it sounds pretty neat.

Image consists of 4 movie still frames stacked vertically.

First frame: A smiling bald headed bearded man with the caption "Minecraft 1.8 came out"

Second frame: A speaking dark haired woman with the caption "Did they finally fix the graphics so it's not just a bunch of cubes?"

Third frame: The bald man appears to be staring with a serious expression.

Final frame: The bald man has shot the dark haired woman through the head with a pistol. Blood spatter explodes from the right rear side of her head as she holds her hand to her neck.

I want sloped blocks. Would provide a lot more building options.

I don't have a problem with cubed graphics, but its hard to properly deny that the game may be better without them since a Minecraft without cubes does not exist.
I personally think I might enjoy a game that feels and plays like Minecraft but with proper terrain a bit more. Like WURM but with Minecraft gameplay.
