A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

While this is in jest, the Asian one is actually a problem in Universities here.

A lot of the foreign Asian first years plagiarize like mad because they have this mentality that someone else has said it better.

I'm an assistant teacher for an ESL class that is mostly college-aged Korean students. This is a problem. I try to coax opinions out of them and they will not do it. Because I am the teacher, they want to defer to my opinions as they are 'factual' and I must be correct. Having a conversation with them can get frustrating because they want to agree with me. The point of our class to to prepare them for American college and that mentality might cause them some trouble.

My first year English class, was about half Asian (I live on the west coast of bc) and our first major assignment apparently 30% of the class plagiarized, I thought it might be a cultural issue.

In my communications classes in school (I'm a mech engineer who just wanted some easy credits) the asians (read: those from asia) were always very shy and quiet. We discussed openly why that is (different cultures.) I believe it certainly holds them back here, as they are so submissive.

Maybe they aren't so confident in speaking in English.

I wasn't trying to insult them. And yes, that is probably part of it. But in communications we learned that you shouldn't assume what is normal in your culture is considered normal in another.

For instance, here it is seen as a sign of respect to look at someone who is speaking to you. In Japan, it could be considered rude to look at someone who is speaking to you.

So to get back to my original point, the inherent passiveness of the asian immigrants in my class could possibly hold them back when going for a job interview, or trying to move up in a company. They would be less likely to confront people, and may be perceived as week. This is not a slight against their culture, just an observation which I made.

well seeing as how asian immigrants and their culture are nothing new, and have the highest rate of graduates and income amongst minorities, they dont seem to having much of a problem

I read all the "a"s as "2"s. Took me a while to figure out what was going on.

[–]sgspectra 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why is the article 'a' used in front of European, and 'an' used before American and African?

[–]mrrar 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because it is correct. Apparently "a" and "an" has more to do whether the sound is a vowel, not the letter.

Since European is spoken as if spelled with a Y, that makes the appropriate sound 'a'

[–]rtilde 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As you said, it depends on how the first sound of the word sounds like a vowel or not, so it also depends on how people say it. Some people say "a hospital" some say "an 'ospital", both are correct.

In this case it's the "an" is leading directly into the "european" becoming "aneuropean" instead of "a yeropean".

[–]sgspectra 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ahh! Good show. I was always curious about what the rule was. I could have sworn I was taught based on spelling and not pronunciation. Is it possible that different standards have different rules?

[–]mrrar 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Absolutely.

[–]mjhowie[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah I've known so many people to base the rules on spelling purely. It always gets me when people swear it is "an history". I do not care if English used to not pronounce the "h", but we do now, so it is a history, thank you very much. Oh my.

Oh my indeed.

What a thoughtless, overtly racist, and totally inaccurate comic!

This seems to imply that an Asian student would know how to ask a question in school....

Have you ever actually seen an American who goes outside during the sunnier seasons? For that matter, have you ever seen an Asian person?
