they dig a hole in the dirt surrounding the road and tunnel underneath the asphalt. They don't actually tunnel through the asphalt.

Ow, that makes perfect sense.

It must be ridiculously scary to know that the road you're on can explode like this any second.

But what triggers them, a simple shock? Then how do they target the soldiers and avoid their own civilians, or do they just know what roads to avoid? This seems so unbelievably inefficient if it's just as likely to kill your own people.

It's possible it's just manually triggered, or it might be on a patch of road that they know primarily gets military traffic. Or they just don't give a fuck about civilians.

They pour gasoline on the asphalt - it loosens it and they are able to easily dig it up and replace it when they are done.

Ok drill a hole through asphalt place in bomb. Fill in hole. Pave over with new asphalt. But I do agree it looks like it came up from above.

New idea for a roads maintenance project: give terrorists a bunch of fake bombs, point out all the potholes, and give them instructions to bury the bomb and pave over the potholes.
